Abstract

A high-quality single-photon blockade system can effectively enhance the quality of single-photon sources. Conventional photon blockade(CPB) suffers from low single-photon purity and high requirements for system nonlinearity, while unconventional photon blockade(UPB) has the disadvantage of low brightness. Recent research by [Laser Photon.Rev 14,1900279,2020] demonstrates that UPB can be used to enhance the strength of CPB, thereby improving the purity of single-photon sources. Research by [Opt. Express 30(12),21787,2022] shows that there is an intersection point between CPB and UPB in certain nonlinear systems, where the performance of single photons is better. In this study, we investigated the phenomenon of photon blockade in a non-degenerate four-wave mixing system, where CPB and UPB can occur simultaneously within the same parameter range. We refer to this phenomenon as composite photon blockade. Particularly, when the system achieves composite photon blockade, the value of g(2)(0) is smaller, and there are more single photons. We conducted analytical analysis and numerical calculations to study the conditions for the realization of CPB, UPB, and 2PB in the system, and discussed in detail the influence of system parameters on various blockade effects.

Strong antibunching effect under the combination of conventional and unconventional photon blockade

Hongyan Zhu, Xiaomiao Li, Zigeng Li +2 more

Photon blockade (PB), an effective method of generating antibunching effect, is a critical way to construct a single photon source. The PB effect can be divided into conventional PB effect (CPB) and unconventional PB effect (UPB). Most studies focus on designing systems to successfully enhance CPB or UPB effect individually. However, CPB extremely depends on the nonlinearity strength of the Kerr materials to achieve strong antibunching effect while UPB relies on quantum interference beset with the high probability of the vacuum state. Here, we propose a method to utilize the relevance and complementarity of CPB and UPB to realize these two types simultaneously. We employ a hybrid Kerr nonlinearity two-cavity system. Because of the mutual assistance of two cavities, CPB and UPB can coexist in the system under certain states. In this way, for the same Kerr material, we reduce the value of the second-order correlation function due to CPB by three orders of magnitude without losing the mean photon number due to the presence of UPB, so the advantages of both PB effects are fully reflected in our system, which is a huge performance boost for single photons.

Conventional and unconventional photon blockade effects in quantum optomechanics

Xiang-Xiang Lu, Jia Ni, Feng-Chao Wang +2 more

We theoretically study the photon blockade (PB) effect in a double-cavity optomechanical system with the two-photon driving. By analytical calculations and numerical simulations, the physical mechanisms of conventional photon blockade (CPB) and unconventional photon blockade (UPB) are discussed in detail. And then we obtain the optimal parameter conditions for PB. In our work, there exist both the CPB induced by strong nonlinear interaction and the UPB caused by quantum interference. In particular, we find that CPB and UPB can occur simultaneously under the same parameters. In addition, we also prove that the appropriate values of nonreciprocal coupling and two-photon driving are favorable to the improvement of PB. Our proposal provides an idea for simultaneously realizing CPB and UPB in the optomechanical system and offers a route for constructing high-quality single-photon sources.

Unconventional photon blockade in a Jaynes–Cummings model nonlinearly coupled with two other modes

Yuxuan Wang, Tong Mao, Yang Hui +1 more

Abstract We have investigated the unconventional photon blockade (UPB) in a hybrid system consisting of a Jaynes–Cummings model nonlinearly coupled with two other modes via a three-wave mixing interaction, operating in the weak coupling regime (compared with the decay rates of the system). We present both analytical and numerical results, obtained by solving the Schrödinger equation and the quantum master equation, respectively. The results show that the numerical simulations agree well with the analytical predictions and that the UPB effect would occur in this hybrid system both in the cavity-driven and atom-driven conditions. Under both driving conditions, the hybrid system could exhibit superior performance over the Jaynes–Cummings model under the same driving condition, i.e. achieve a stronger photon blockade effect. The influences of driving strength and coupling coefficient on photon blockade effect have also been discussed. Our finding may have potential applications in single-photon sources design.

Compound photon blockade based on three mode system

Hongyu Lin

Based on the four wave mixing, a three mode nonlinear system is proposed. The single photon blockade is discussed through analytical analysis and numerical calculation. The analytical analysis shows that the conventional photon blockade and unconventional photon blockade can be realized at the same time, and the analytical conditions of the two kinds of blockade are the same. The numerical results show that the system not only has the maximum average photon number in the blockade region, but also can have strong photon anti-bunching in the region with small nonlinear coupling coefficient, which greatly reduces the experimental difficulty of the system. This optical system which can realize the compound photon blockade effect is helpful to realize the high-purity single photon source.

Strongly enhanced photon-pair blockade with three-wave mixing by quantum interference

Xianfu Qiao, Zhihai Yao, Yang Hui

In this paper, the photon-pair blockade effect in a three-wave mixing system with Kerr nonlinearity has been studied. By analytical calculation and numerical analysis, we find that the conventional photon blockade and unconventional photon blockade of the photon pair could be realized simultaneously in the strong-coupling regime in this system, and the photon-pair blockade effect could be enhanced strongly by the combination of them. The combination could also lead to a much stronger photon-pair blockade effect in this hybrid system than in a three-wave mixing system, which may contribute to construction of single photon-pair sources with much higher purity without the loss of brightness. In addition, both the same-frequency and different-frequency photon-pair blockades could be realized in this scheme, which may contribute to construction of the same-frequency or different-frequency photon-pair sources or devices. All the results may provide useful theoretical references for the design of correlated photon-pair sources or devices in future experiments and applications.

Giant-atom-mediated photon blockade

C. Cui, W. Y. Hu, Y. Q. Ji +3 more

Photon blockade is a phenomenon where the presence of system nonlinearity causes the output to consist of single photons, which has been extensively studied in point atom systems, but it is barely explored in giant atom ones. In this paper, we propose giant atom-mediated photon blockade scheme based on two cavities and three cavities systems with driving field applied to the first cavity. We show that simultaneous unconventional photon blockades (UPBs) can not occur in the point atom system (the atom coupling only to the leftmost cavity) due to there always existing a cavity to have a single path. In contrast, the spatially extended nature of giant atom enables coupling to multiple cavities and allows for the introduction of a phase and coupling strength. Consequently, simultaneous UPBs in multiple cavities can be obtained due to the multipath destructive interference. Moreover, by manipulating the detuning, we observe simultaneous conventional photon blockades (CPBs) in multiple cavities. Finally, we study simultaneous two-photon blockades (2PBs) in point atom multiple cavities system.
