Abstract

Bosonic two-mode squeezed states are paradigmatic entangled Gaussian states that have wide utility in quantum information and metrology. Here, we show that the basic structure of these states can be generalized to arbitrary bipartite quantum systems in a manner that allows simultaneous, Heisenberg-limited estimation of two independent parameters for finite-dimensional systems. Further, we show that these general states can always be stabilized by a relatively simple Markovian dissipative process. In the specific case where the two subsystems are ensembles of two-level atoms or spins, our generalized states define a notion of two-mode spin squeezing that is valid beyond the Gaussian limit and that enables true multiparameter estimation. We discuss how generalized Ramsey measurements allow one to reach the two-parameter quantum Cramér-Rao bound, and how the dissipative preparation scheme is compatible with current experiments.

Multi-parameter quantum estimation of single- and two-mode pure Gaussian states

Gabriele Bressanini, Marco G. Genoni, M. S. Kim +1 more

Abstract We discuss the ultimate precision bounds on the multiparameter estimation of single- and two-mode pure Gaussian states. By leveraging on previous approaches that focused on the estimation of a complex displacement only, we derive the Holevo Cramér–Rao bound (HCRB) for both displacement and squeezing parameter characterizing single and two-mode squeezed states. In the single-mode scenario, we obtain an analytical bound and find that it degrades monotonically as the squeezing increases. Furthermore, we prove that heterodyne detection is nearly optimal in the large squeezing limit, but in general the optimal measurement must include non-Gaussian resources. On the other hand, in the two-mode setting, the HCRB improves as the squeezing parameter grows and we show that it can be attained using double-homodyne detection.

Multiparameter Gaussian quantum metrology

Rosanna Nichols, Pietro Liuzzo-Scorpo, Paul A. Knott +1 more

We investigate the ultimate precision achievable in Gaussian quantum metrology. We derive general analytical expressions for the quantum Fisher information matrix and for the measurement compatibility condition, ensuring asymptotic saturability of the quantum Cram\'er-Rao bound, for the estimation of multiple parameters encoded in multimode Gaussian states. We then apply our results to the joint estimation of a phase shift and two parameters characterizing Gaussian phase covariant noise in optical interferometry. In such a scheme, we show that two-mode displaced squeezed input probes with optimally tuned squeezing and displacement fulfill the measurement compatibility condition and enable the simultaneous estimation of all three parameters, with an advantage over individual estimation schemes that quickly rises with increasing mean energy of the probes.

Joint Estimation of a Two-Phase Spin Rotation beyond Classical Limit

The focus and progress so far have primarily centered on estimating a single parameter. In diverse application scenarios, estimation of more than one single parameter is often required. Joint estimation of multiple parameters can benefit from additional advantages for further enhanced precision. Here we report quantum-enhanced estimation of simultaneous spin rotations around two orthogonal axes, making use of spin-nematic squeezing in an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate. Aided by the F=2 atomic ground hyperfine manifold coupled to the nematic-squeezed F=1 states as an auxiliary field through a sequence of microwave (MW) pulses, multiple spin-1 observables are simultaneously measured, reaching an enhancement factor 3.3 to 6.3 decibels (dB) beyond the classical limit over a wide range of rotation angles. Our work realizes the first quantum enhanced multiparameter estimation using entangled massive particles. The techniques developed and the protocols implemented also highlight the application of two-mode squeezed vacuum states in quantum-enhanced sensing of noncommuting spin rotations simultaneously.

Squeezing of nonlinear spin observables by one axis twisting in the presence of decoherence: An analytical study

Youcef Baamara, Alice Sinatra, Manuel Gessner

In an ensemble of two-level atoms that can be described in terms of a collective spin, entangled states can be used to enhance the sensitivity of interferometric precision measurements. While non-Gaussian spin states can produce larger quantum enhancements than spin-squeezed Gaussian states, their use requires the measurement of observables that are nonlinear functions of the three components of the collective spin. In this paper we develop strategies that achieve the optimal quantum enhancements using non-Gaussian states produced by a nonlinear one-axis-twisting Hamiltonian, and show that measurement-after-interaction techniques, known to amplify the output signals in quantum parameter estimation protocols, are effective in measuring nonlinear spin observables. Including the presence of the relevant decoherence processes from atomic experiments, we determine analytically the quantum enhancement of non-Gaussian over-squeezed states as a function of the noise parameters for arbitrary atom numbers.

Precision bounds for quantum phase estimation using two-mode squeezed Gaussian states

Jiandong Zhang, Chuang Li, Lili 丽丽 Hou 侯 +1 more

Abstract Quantum phase estimation based on Gaussian states plays a crucial role in many application fields. In this paper, we study the precision bound for the scheme using two-mode squeezed Gaussian states. The quantum Fisher information is calculated and its maximization is used to determine the optimal parameters. We find that two single-mode squeezed vacuum states are the optimal Gaussian inputs for a fixed two-mode squeezing process. The corresponding precision bound is sub-Heisenberg-limited and scales as N −1/2. For practical purposes, we consider the effects originating from photon loss. The precision bound can still outperform the shot-noise limit when the lossy rate is below 0.4. Our work may demonstrate a significant and promising step towards practical quantum metrology.
