Experimental Demonstration of Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking with Emergent Multiqubit Entanglement

Ri‐Hua Zheng, Wen Ning, Jiahao Lu +8 more

Spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) is crucial to the occurrence of phase transitions. Once a phase transition occurs, a quantum system presents degenerate eigenstates that lack the symmetry of the Hamiltonian. After crossing the critical point, the system is essentially evolved to a quantum superposition of these eigenstates until decoherence sets in. Despite the fundamental importance and potential applications in quantum technologies, such quantum-mechanical SSB phenomena have not been experimentally explored in many-body systems. We here present an experimental demonstration of the SSB process in the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model, governed by the competition between the individual driving and intraqubit interaction. The model is realized in a circuit quantum electrodynamics system, where 6 Xmon qubits are coupled in an all-to-all manner through virtual photon exchange mediated by a resonator. The observed nonclassical correlations among these qubits in the symmetry-breaking region go beyond the conventional description of SSB, shedding new light on phase transitions for quantum many-body systems.

Effects of Spontaneous Symmetry Break in the Origin of Non-analytic Behavior of Entanglement at Quantum Phase Transitions

L. J. Pereira, Thiago Rodrigues de Oliveira

We present an example where spontaneous symmetry breaking may affect not only the behavior of the entanglement at Quantum Phase Transitions, but also the origin of its non-analyticity. In particular, in the XXZ model, we study the non-analyticities in the concurrence between two spins, which was claimed to be accidental since it had its origin in the optimization involved in the concurrence definition. We show that when one takes into account the effect of the spontaneous symmetry breaking, even though the values of the entanglement measure does not change, the origin of the non-analytical behavior changes. The non-analytical behavior is not due to the optimization process anymore and in this sense it is a "natural" non-analyticity. This is a much more subtle influence of the spontaneous symmetry breaking not observed before. We also show that the value of entanglement between one site and the rest of the chain changes after taking into account the spontaneous symmetry breaking.

Observation of Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking at the Dicke Quantum Phase Transition

Kristian Baumann, Rafael Mottl, Ferdinand Brennecke +1 more

We study symmetry breaking at the Dicke quantum phase transition by coupling a motional degree of freedom of a Bose-Einstein condensate to the field of an optical cavity. Using an optical heterodyne detection scheme we observe symmetry breaking in real-time and distinguish the two superradiant phases. We explore the process of symmetry breaking in the presence of a small symmetry-breaking field, and study its dependence on the rate at which the critical point is crossed. Coherent switching between the two ordered phases is demonstrated.
