Fate of entanglement in quadratic Markovian dissipative systems

Abstract

We develop a hydrodynamic description for the driven-dissipative dynamics of the entanglement negativity, which quantifies the genuine entanglement in mixed-state systems. We focus on quantum quenches in fermionic and bosonic systems subject to linear dissipation, as described by quadratic Lindblad master equations. In the spirit of hydrodynamics, we divide the system into mesoscopic cells. At early times, correlations are generated in each cell by the unitary component of the evolution. Correlations are then transported across different cells via ballistic quasiparticle propagation, while simultaneously evolving under the action of the environment. We show that in the hydrodynamic limit the negativity can be reconstructed from the correlations between the independently propagating quasiparticles. We benchmark our approach considering quenches from both homogeneous and inhomogeneous initial states in the Kitaev chain, the tight-binding chain, and the harmonic chain in the presence of gain or loss dissipation.

Dissipative quasiparticle picture for quadratic Markovian open quantum systems

Federico Carollo, Vincenzo Alba

Correlations between different regions of a quantum many-body system can be quantified through measures based on entropies of (reduced) subsystem states. For closed systems, several analytical and numerical tools, e.g., hydrodynamic theories or tensor networks, can accurately capture the time evolution of subsystem entropies, thus allowing for a profound understanding of the unitary dynamics of quantum correlations. However, these methods either cannot be applied to open quantum systems or do not permit an efficient computation of quantum entropies for mixed states. Here we make progress in solving this issue by developing a dissipative quasiparticle picture---describing quantum entropies and the mutual information in the limit of large space-time coordinates with their ratio being fixed---and showing its validity for quadratic open quantum systems. Our results demonstrate that the open quantum many-body dynamics of correlations can be understood in terms of propagating (dissipative) quasiparticles.

Symmetry-resolved entanglement in fermionic systems with dissipation

Sara Murciano, Pasquale Calabrese, Vincenzo Alba

Abstract We investigate symmetry-resolved entanglement in out-of-equilibrium fermionic systems subject to gain and loss dissipation, which preserves the block-diagonal structure of the reduced density matrix. We derive a hydrodynamic description of the dynamics of several entanglement-related quantities, such as the symmetry-resolved von Neumann entropy and the charge-imbalance-resolved fermionic negativity. We show that all these quantities admit a hydrodynamic description in terms of entangled quasiparticles. While the entropy is dominated by dissipative processes, the resolved negativity is sensitive to the presence of entangled quasiparticles, and it shows the typical ‘rise and fall’ dynamics. Our results hold in the weak-dissipative hydrodynamic limit of large intervals, long times and weak dissipation rates.

Entanglement dynamics after quenches with inhomogeneous Hamiltonians

Andrea Di Pasquale, Federico Rottoli, Vincenzo Alba

We investigate entanglement dynamics in bipartite systems governed by inhomogeneous Hamiltonians of the form $H = H_L + H_R$, where $H_{L/R}$ acts only on the left or right region and is homogeneous within each region. Focusing on the XX chain and the transverse-field Ising chain, we derive analytical formulas for the entanglement entropy between the two regions in the hydrodynamic limit of long times. In this regime, fermions incident on the interface undergo scattering, generating entanglement between reflected and transmitted modes. The resulting quasiparticle picture is controlled by the transmission coefficient, which we obtain analytically by solving the stationary lattice Schrödinger equation. Due to the bounded dispersion, strong inhomogeneity suppresses both transport and entanglement growth. We benchmark our analytical predictions against numerical simulations in paradigmatic setups. Finally, we extend the analysis to the interacting XXZ chain using tDMRG. The numerical data show qualitative agreement with the quadratic case: entanglement growth remains suppressed in the strongly inhomogeneous limit. Notably, however, entanglement continues to increase even when transport is suppressed, at least at intermediate times.

Rényi negativities in non-equilibrium open free-boson chains

Hui-Huang Chen

A bstract In this paper, we consider the dynamics of Rényi negativities after a quantum quench in the free-boson chain with homogeneous dissipation. Initially we prepare the system in the squeezed thermal state, and then let it evolves under the tight-binding bosonic Hamiltonian with local linear dissipation. We use the Lindblad equation to solve the time evolution of the covariance matrix, from which one can obtain the time dependence of Rényi negativities. We are interested in the weak dissipation hydrodynamic limit where a quasi-particle picture emerges. In this limit, exact results of non-equilibrium dynamics of Rényi negativities can be obtained using the stationary phase method. We consider the Rényi negativities between both adjacent and disjoint regions in a infinite chain. We numerically test our analytical predictions and perfect matches have found.

Entanglement Hamiltonians in dissipative free fermions and the time-dependent GGE

Riccardo Travaglino, Federico Rottoli, Pasquale Calabrese

We investigate the dynamics of Entanglement Hamiltonians (EHs) in dissipative free-fermionic systems using a recent operator-based formulation of the quasiparticle picture. Focusing on gain and loss dissipation, we study the post-quench evolution and derive explicit expressions for the EH at the ballistic scale. In the long-time and weak-dissipation regime, the EH is shown to take the form of a time-dependent Generalized Gibbs Ensemble (t-GGE), with a structure that is universal across different initial states of the quench protocol. Within this framework, the emergence of the t-GGE is fully accounted for by the quasiparticle picture, and we argue that this description remains valid whenever the Lindbladian admits an appropriate coarse-grained representation.

Hydrodynamics of quantum entropies in Ising chains with linear dissipation

Vincenzo Alba, Federico Carollo

Abstract We study the dynamics of quantum information and of quantum correlations after a quantum quench, in transverse field Ising chains subject to generic linear dissipation. As we show, in the hydrodynamic limit of long times, large system sizes, and weak dissipation, entropy-related quantities—such as the von Neumann entropy, the Rényi entropies, and the associated mutual information—admit a simple description within the so-called quasiparticle picture. Specifically, we analytically derive a hydrodynamic formula, recently conjectured for generic noninteracting systems, which allows us to demonstrate a universal feature of the dynamics of correlations in such dissipative noninteracting system. For any possible dissipation, the mutual information grows up to a time scale that is proportional to the inverse dissipation rate, and then decreases, always vanishing in the long time limit. In passing, we provide analytic formulas describing the time-dependence of arbitrary functions of the fermionic covariance matrix, in the hydrodynamic limit.
