Abstract

Besides the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition, the two-dimensional generalized XY model, identified by a generalization parameter $q$ (as proposed by Romano and Zagrebnov), can also support a first-order phase transition, starting from a critical value ${q}_{c}$. However, the value of ${q}_{c}$ at which this transition takes place is unknown. In this paper, we take two approaches to accurately determine the critical parameter ${q}_{c}$. Furthermore, we show that the model is characterized by three distinct regions concerning both first-order and Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transitions. Finally, the underlying mechanism governing such transitions is presented, along with an estimation of the critical temperatures.

Phase transition of a two-dimensional generalized XY model

Yukihiro Komura, Yutaka Okabe

We study the two-dimensional generalized XY model that depends on an integer $q$ by the Monte Carlo method. This model was recently proposed by Romano and Zagrebnov. We find a single Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) transition for all values of $q$, in contrast with the previous speculation that there may be two transitions, one a regular KT transition and another a first-order transition at a higher temperature. We show the universality of the KT transitions by comparing the universal finite-size scaling behaviors at different values of $q$ without assuming a specific universal form in terms of the KT transition temperature $T_{\rm KT}$.

Phase diagram of generalized XY model using the tensor renormalization group

Abhishek Samlodia, Vamika Longia, Raghav G. Jha +1 more

We use the higher-order tensor renormalization group method to study the two-dimensional generalized XY model that admits integer and half-integer vortices. This model is the deformation of the classical XY model and has a rich phase structure consisting of nematic, ferromagnetic, and disordered phases and three transition lines belonging to the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless and Ising class. We explore the model for a wide range of temperatures, T , and the deformation parameter, Δ , and compute specific heat along with integer and half-integer magnetic susceptibility, finding both Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless-like and Ising-like transitions and the region where they meet. Berezinskii–Kosterlitz–Thouless Transition of the Two-Dimensional XY Model on the Honeycomb Lattice

Fu-Jiun Jiang

Abstract The Berezinskii–Kosterlitz–Thouless (BKT) transition of the two-dimensional $XY$ model on the honeycomb lattice is investigated using both the techniques of Neural network (NN) and Monte Carlo simulations. It is demonstrated in the literature that, with certain plausible assumptions, the associated critical temperature $T_{\text{BKT,H}}$ is found to be ${1}/{\sqrt{2}}$ exactly. Surprisingly, the value of $T_{\text{BKT,H}}$ obtained from our NN calculations is 0.572(3), which deviates significantly from ${1}/{\sqrt{2}}$. In addition, based on the helicity modulus, the $T_{\text{BKT,H}}$ determined is 0.576(4), agreeing well with that resulting from the NN estimation. It will be interesting to carry out a more detailed analytic calculation to obtain a theoretical value consistent with the numerical result reached here.

Binder Parameter in a Generalized Two-dimensional XY Model

Duong Xuan Nui, Truong Thi Bach Yen, Nguyễn Hữu Cường +6 more

We performed Monte Carlo simulation for a two-dimensional generalized XY model and calculated the magnetic and nematic Binder parameters. The phase diagram is re-examined based on these Binder parameters, demonstrating their power in studying generalized XY models. The Binder parameter has distinctive behaviors, resulting in different types of phase transition. More importantly, the magnetic Binder parameter gives more insights into the tricritical region where the Kosterlitz-Thouless, Ising, and 1/2 Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) transition lines meet. It shows signatures for the intermediate region starting from the tricritical point, where the transition line is neither the same physics as the Ising transition below nor the KT transition far above the tricritical point.

Critical analysis of two-dimensional classical XY model

Raghav G Jha

Abstract We consider the two-dimensional classical XY model on a square lattice in the thermodynamic limit using tensor renormalization group and precisely determine the critical temperature corresponding to the Berezinskii–Kosterlitz–Thouless (BKT) phase transition to be 0.89290(5) which is an improvement compared to earlier studies using tensor network methods.

The phase diagram and critical properties of the two-dimensional anisotropicXYmodel

Antonio S. T. Pires, L.S. Lima, M. E. Gouvêa

In this paper we present a study of the phase diagram and critical properties of the square-lattice quantum XY model, with a single-ion anisotropy and spin S = 1, as a function of the anisotropy parameter D . For D less than a critical value D C , which is the critical point for a quantum phase transition at T = 0, the model presents a Berezinskii–Kosterlitz–Thouless (BKT) transition. This region is adequately described by the self-consistent harmonic approximation. We show that, if we want to use a Schwinger boson theory in this region, we should include fluctuations around the mean-field approximation (which leads to a gauge field) to describe correctly the BKT transition. However both methods are inadequate to describe the large- D phase, and we show that this phase can be studied using the bond operator formalism which gives the correct behaviour for the correlation length as a function of the temperature in the critical point and above. Our results agree with scaling arguments.
