Abstract

The study of state-to-state spin-exchange collisions in the vicinity of $p$-wave Feshbach resonances offer great opportunities to explore many-body interactions and novel quantum phases. Here, we report the observation of a spin-exchange collision near a $p$-wave Feshbach resonance within a mixture of the lowest and third-lowest hyperfine states of $^6$Li atoms. The spin-exchange interaction is observed over a range of ten gausses and produces a pair of atoms in the second-lowest hyperfine states that are captured by a deep optical dipole trap. We apply a coupled-channel method to calculate the scattering properties of this system. We find that the $p$-wave resonance exhibits a low inelastic collision rate and a broad resonance profile, which is due to the modification by the accompanying spin-exchange collisions. These findings open up new possibilities for the creation of long-lived, strongly interacting $p$-wave Fermi gases.

The authors investigate spin-exchange collisions near a $p$-wave Feshbach resonance in ${}^{6}$Li atoms, observing an interaction range of approximately 10G that produces atom pairs in the second-lowest hyperfine state, held in a stable optical trap. Coupled-channel calculations reveal a broad resonance profile and low inelastic collision rate, opening possibilities for long-lived, strongly interacting $p$-wave Fermi gases.

Feshbach resonances in mixtures of ultracold Li6 and Rb87 gases

Benjamin Deh, C. Marzok, Claus Zimmermann +1 more

We report on the observation of two Feshbach resonances in collisions between ultracold $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ and $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms in their respective hyperfine ground states $\ensuremath{\mid}F,{m}_{F}⟩=\ensuremath{\mid}1∕2,1∕2⟩$ and \ensuremath{\mid}1,1⟩. The resonances show up as trap losses for the $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ cloud induced by inelastic Li-Rb-Rb three-body collisions. The magnetic field values where they occur represent important benchmarks for an accurate determination of the interspecies interaction potentials. A broad Feshbach resonance located at $1066.92\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{G}$ opens interesting prospects for the creation of ultracold heteronuclear molecules. We furthermore observe a strong enhancement of the narrow $p$-wave Feshbach resonance in collisions of $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ atoms at $158.55\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{G}$ in the presence of a dense $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ cloud. The effect of the $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ cloud is to introduce Li-Li-Rb three-body collisions occurring at a higher rate than Li-Li-Li collisions.

Giant Feshbach resonances in Li6 - Rb85 mixtures

Benjamin Deh, Will Gunton, Bruce G. Klappauf +4 more

We report on the observation of six large Feshbach resonances in a Fermi-Bose mixture of $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ and $^{85}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms. Near the resonances, both the elastic and inelastic collision rates are enhanced, and this results primarily in the loss of $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ from an optical dipole trap since it is less massive and less confined than its $^{85}\mathrm{Rb}$ collision partner. We interpret our experimental data using a coupled-channels calculation which fully characterizes the ground-state scattering properties in any combination of spin states.

Observation of interspecies 6 Li- 133 Cs Feshbach resonances

M. Repp, R. Pires, Juris Ulmanis +4 more

We report on the observation of 19 interspecies Feshbach resonances in an optically trapped ultracold Bose-Fermi mixture of ${}^{133}\text{Cs}$ and ${}^{6}\text{Li}$ in the two energetically lowest spin states. We assign the resonances to $s$- and $p$-wave molecular channels by a coupled-channels calculation, resulting in an accurate determination of LiCs ground-state potentials. Fits of the resonance position based on the undressed asymptotic bound state model do not provide the same level of accuracy as the coupled-channels calculation. Several broad $s$-wave resonances provide prospects to create fermionic LiCs molecules with a large dipole moment via Feshbach association followed by stimulated Raman passage. Two of the $s$-wave resonances overlap with a zero crossing of the Cs scattering length, which offers prospects for the investigation of polarons in an ultracold Li-Cs mixture.

Feshbach Resonances in p -Wave Three-Body Recombination within Fermi-Fermi Mixtures of Open-Shell Li6 and Closed-Shell Yb173 Atoms

Alaina Green, Hui Li, Jun Hui See Toh +6 more

We report on the observation of magnetic Feshbach resonances in a Fermi-Fermi mixture of ultracold atoms with extreme mass imbalance and on their unique p-wave dominated three-body recombination processes. Our system consists of open-shell alkali-metal 6 Li and closed-shell 173 Yb atoms, both spin polarized and held at various temperatures between 1 and 20 μK.We confirm that Feshbach resonances in this system are solely the result of a weak separation-dependent hyperfine coupling between the electronic spin of 6 Li and the nuclear spin of 173 Yb.Our analysis also shows that three-body recombination rates are controlled by the identical fermion nature of the mixture, even in the presence of s-wave collisions between the two species and with recombination rate coefficients outside the Wigner threshold regime at our lowest temperature.Specifically, a comparison of experimental and theoretical line shapes of the recombination process indicates that the characteristic asymmetric line shape as a function of applied magnetic field and a maximum recombination rate coefficient that is independent of temperature can only be explained by triatomic collisions with nonzero, p-wave total orbital angular momentum. The resonances can be used to form ultracold doublet ground-state molecules and to simulate quantum superfluidity in mass-imbalanced mixtures.

Spin-polarized fermions with p -wave interactions

Furkan Çağrı Top, Yair Margalit, Wolfgang Ketterle

We have created quantum degenerate Fermi gases of $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ atoms at unprecedented high densities exceeding $1/{\ensuremath{\lambda}\phantom{\rule{-0.5em}{0ex}}\ensuremath{-}}^{3}$ (where $\ensuremath{\lambda}$ is the wavelength of resonant light). In this regime, new optical properties are predicted. Spin-polarized Fermi gases are usually regarded as noninteracting due to the weakness of $p$-wave interactions. Here we study the properties of ``$p$-wave matter,'' where elastic and inelastic $p$-wave collisions determine the dynamics of the system. We characterize thermalization, evaporative cooling, and inelastic two-body and three-body collisions. $P$-wave dipolar relaxation creates a metastable mixture of the lowest and highest hyperfine states.
