Abstract

We unravel stationary states in the form of dark soliton stripes, bubbles, and kinks embedded in a two-dimensional droplet-bearing setting emulated by an extended Gross-Pitaevskii approach. The existence of these configurations is corroborated through an effectively reduced potential picture demonstrating their concrete parametric regions of existence. The excitation spectra of such configurations are analyzed within the Bogoliubov--de Gennes framework exposing the destabilization of dark soliton stripes and bubbles, while confirming the stability of droplets, and importantly unveiling spectral stability of the kink against transverse excitations. Additionally, a variational approach is constructed providing access to the transverse stability analysis of the dark soliton stripe for arbitrary chemical potentials and widths of the structure. This is subsequently compared with the stability analysis outcome demonstrating very good agreement at small wave numbers. Dynamical destabilization of dark soliton stripes via the snake instability is showcased, while bubbles are found to feature both a splitting into a gray soliton pair and a transverse instability thereof. These results shed light on unexplored stability and instability properties of nonlinear excitations in environments featuring a competition of mean-field repulsion and beyond-mean-field attraction that can be probed by state-of-the-art experiments.

Solitary waves in a quantum droplet-bearing system

We unravel the existence and stability properties of dark soliton solutions as they extend from the regime of trapped quantum droplets towards the Thomas-Fermi limit in homonuclear symmetric Bose mixtures. Leveraging a phase-plane analysis, we identify the regimes of existence of different types of quantum droplets and subsequently examine the possibility of black and gray solitons and kink-type structures in this system. Moreover, we employ the Landau dynamics approach to extract an analytical estimate of the oscillation frequency of a single dark soliton in the relevant extended Gross--Pitaevskii model. Within this framework, we also find that the single soliton immersed in a droplet is stable, while multisoliton configurations exhibit parametric windows of oscillatory instabilities. Our results pave the way for studying dynamical features of nonlinear multisoliton excitations in a droplet environment in contemporary experimental settings.

Interactions and Dynamics of One-Dimensional Droplets, Bubbles and Kinks

G. C. Katsimiga, S. I. Mistakidis, Boris A. Malomed +3 more

We explore the dynamics and interactions of multiple bright droplets and bubbles, as well as the interactions of kinks with droplets and with antikinks, in the extended one-dimensional Gross–Pitaevskii model including the Lee–Huang–Yang correction. Existence regions are identified for the one-dimensional droplets and bubbles in terms of their chemical potential, verifying the stability of the droplets and exposing the instability of the bubbles. The limiting case of the droplet family is a stable kink. The interactions between droplets demonstrate in-phase (out-of-phase) attraction (repulsion), with the so-called Manton’s method explicating the observed dynamical response, and mixed behavior for intermediate values of the phase shift. Droplets bearing different chemical potentials experience mass-exchange phenomena. Individual bubbles exhibit core expansion and mutual attraction prior to their destabilization. Droplets interacting with kinks are absorbed by them, a process accompanied by the emission of dispersive shock waves and gray solitons. Kink–antikink interactions are repulsive, generating counter-propagating shock waves. Our findings reveal dynamical features of droplets and kinks that can be detected in current experiments.

Dynamics of interacting dark soliton stripes

P. G. Kevrekidis, Wenlong Wang, Georgios Theocharis +3 more

In the present work we examine the statics and dynamics of multiple parallel dark soliton stripes in a two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate. Our principal goal is to study the effect of the interaction between the stripes on the transverse instability of the individual stripes. The cases of two-, three-, and four-stripe states are studied in detail. We use a recently developed adiabatic invariant formulation to derive a quasianalytical prediction for the stripe equilibrium position and for the Bogoliubov--de Gennes spectrum of excitations of stationary stripes. We subsequently test our predictions against numerical simulations of the full two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We find that the number of unstable eigenmodes increases as the number of stripes increases due to (unstable) relative motions between the stripes. Their corresponding growth rates do not significantly change, although for large chemical potentials, the larger the stripe number, the larger the maximal instability growth rate. The instability induced dynamics of multiple stripe states and their decay into vortices are also investigated.

Variational approach to the snake instability of a Bose-Einstein condensate soliton

U. Tanyeri, M. A. Gürkan, Ahmet Keleş +1 more

Solitons are striking manifestations of nonlinearity, encountered in diverse physical systems such as water waves, nonlinear optics, and Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). In BECs, dark solitons emerge as exact stationary solutions of the one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation. While they can be long-lived in elongated traps, their stability is compromised in higher dimensions due to the snake instability, which leads to the decay of the soliton into vortex structures among other excitations. We investigate the dynamics of a dark soliton in a Bose-Einstein condensate confined in an anisotropic harmonic trap. Using a variational ansatz that incorporates both the transverse bending of the soliton plane and the emergence of vortices along the nodal line, we derive equations of motion governing the soliton's evolution. This approach allows us to identify stable oscillation modes as well as the growth rates of the unstable perturbations. In particular, we determine the critical trap anisotropy required to suppress the snake instability. Our analytical predictions are in good agreement with full numerical simulations of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation.

Front-based construction of quantum droplets, bubbles, and hole states in a Bose mixture

Sherzod R. Otajonov, F. Kh. Abdullaev

We study nonlinear holes, bubbles, kink fronts, and quantum-droplet-like states in an elongated Bose mixture governed by an extended Gross-Pitaevskii equation with attractive cubic mean-field interactions and repulsive quartic Lee-Huang-Yang contribution. We classify the constant-amplitude backgrounds: the Bogoliubov-de Gennes spectrum shows that the upper branch is modulationally stable, whereas the lower branch is unstable to long-wavelength perturbations. Grand-potential and pressure determine the vacuum-finite-density coexistence point and the unique background supporting stationary kink and antikink fronts. Symmetric holes on the stable background have a density deficit and integral width that diverge near coexistence as the hole separates into two nonlinear fronts. A multiplicative kink-antikink construction connects bell-shaped states to broad flat-top droplets and approaches the stationary quantum-droplet family as the front separation increases. An antikink-kink sum with equal signs generates bubble-like density depletions without a phase jump, whereas their difference produces dark-hole-like profiles with a $π$ phase difference between the asymptotic backgrounds. Bubble depth increases with front separation, distinguishing gray-like and dark-like profiles. Real-time simulations show that deep bubbles persist under weak random perturbations, demonstrating finite-time robustness without establishing spectral stability. In the asymmetric two-component model, localized relative-density modes can induce spinor-driven breakup on a modulationally stable background, while robust holes persist near the kink limit. Collisions of kink-antikink droplet-like states display phase-dependent merging, asymmetric particle transfer, and effective reflection. These results connect nonlinear fronts with bubbles, phase-jump holes, and self-bound droplets in beyond-mean-field Bose mixtures.

Two-dimensional solitons in extended GPE models with Lee-Huang-Yang corrections

G. N. Koutsokostas, F. Bristy, E. C. Psychogiou +5 more

We investigate the existence and dynamics of two-dimensional solitary waves in a quantum droplet environment described by the extended Gross-Pitaevskii equation featuring logarithmic mean-field and Lee-Huang-Yang interactions. In the modulationally stable regime of the background, we employ suitable multiscale asymptotic methods to derive effective nonlinear integrable models corresponding to the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili and Davey-Stewartson equations. Based on these reduced models, we construct approximate analytical solutions describing line solitons, algebraically localized lump solitons, ring solitons, and exponentially localized dromions embedded on the droplet background. The dynamical robustness of these solutions is monitored through numerical simulations. Line, lump and ring solitons stay closest to the theoretical predictions, although progressively deviate due to the emergence of small-amplitude radiation, while dromions depart from their analytical waveform the most, although they roughly maintain their shape. Our results unveil unprecedented multidimensional soliton solutions in models featuring the competition of mean-field and quantum fluctuations and as such are amenable to current ultracold atom experiments.
