Abstract

Conditional addition of photons represents a crucial tool for optical quantum state engineering and it forms a fundamental building block of advanced quantum photonic devices. Here we report on experimental implementation of the conditional addition of several photons. We demonstrate the addition of one, two, and three photons to input coherent states with various amplitudes. The resulting highly nonclassical photon-added states are completely characterized with time-domain homodyne tomography, and the nonclassicality of the prepared states is witnessed by the negativity of their Wigner functions. We experimentally demonstrate that the conditional addition of photons realizes approximate noiseless quantum amplification of coherent states with sufficiently large amplitude. We also investigate certification of the stellar rank of the generated multiphoton-added coherent states, which quantifies the non-Gaussian resources required for their preparation. Our results pave the way towards the experimental realization of complex optical quantum operations based on combination of multiple photon additions and subtractions.

Experimental noiseless quantum amplification of coherent states of light by two-photon addition and subtraction

Michal Neset, Jiří Fadrný, Martin Bielak +3 more

Noiseless quantum amplifiers are probabilistic quantum devices that enhance the amplitude of coherent states without adding any noise, which has far reaching applications in quantum optics and quantum information processing. Here, we report on an experimental implementation of an advanced noiseless quantum amplifier for coherent states of light that is based on the conditional addition of two photons followed by the conditional subtraction of two photons. We comprehensively characterize the noiselessly amplified coherent states via quantum state tomography and analyze the amplification gain and noise properties of the amplifier. We observe very good agreement between the experiment and theoretical predictions. Our work reveals that sequences of multiple photon additions and subtractions represent an efficient and experimentally feasible alternative to multiplexing that was originally proposed to boost the performance of noiseless quantum amplifiers. Beyond noiseless quantum amplification, our experiment represents a significant step forward towards engineering complex quantum operations on traveling light beams by coherent combinations of various sequences of multiphoton additions and subtractions.

Generation of heralded optical cat states by photon addition

Yi-Ru Chen, Hsien-Yi Hsieh, Jingyu Ning +7 more

Optical cat states, the nonclassical superposition of two quasi-classical coherent states, serve as a basis for gedankenexperiments testing quantum physics on mesoscopic scales and are increasingly recognized as a resource for quantum information processing. Here, we report the first experimental realization of optical cat states by adding a photon to a squeezed vacuum state; so far only photon-subtraction protocols have been realized. Photon addition gives us the advantage of using heralded signal photons as experimental triggers, and we can generate cat states at rates exceeding $2.3\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{5}$ counts per second. Our most highly squeezed vacuum input state shows \ensuremath{-}8.9 dB squeezing, but such squeezing entails some degradation---in this case, 15.1 dB antisqueezing. Even so, our approach enables us to synthesize a state with a maximum cat amplitude of $|\ensuremath{\alpha}|\ensuremath{\approx}1.77$ whose Wigner distribution still shows pronounced negative parts. Our experimental implementation with controlled photon addition demonstrates a powerful and robust building block for advanced quantum state engineering and shows that heralded photon addition can be controlled well and performed at high rates.

Experimental Noiseless Quantum Amplification of Coherent States of Light by Two-Photon Addition and Subtraction

Michal Neset, Jiří Fadrný, Martin Bielak +3 more

Loss suppression is a major challenge in quantum communication and quantum computing, primarily due to the limitations imposed by the no-cloning theorem. We present a noiseless quantum amplifier capable of probabilistically increasing the amplitude of coherent states without introducing additional noise to the amplified state. This is achieved through the conditional addition and subtraction of photons. Previously, experimental photon addition was restricted to a single photon. Recently, we have pushed these boundaries, demonstrating photon addition of up to three photons for the first time [1], as well as the combination of conditional addition of two photons followed by their conditional subtraction [2]. Our advanced noiseless amplifier achieves high amplification gain, fidelity, and purity, with the quadrature variances of the noiselessly amplified coherent states remaining close to the minimum uncertainty limit. Figure 1 illustrates the performance of our amplifier compared to that of an amplifier based on single-photon addition and subtraction.

The non-Gaussianity and nonclassicality of photon-subtracted-then-added squeezing-enhanced coherent state

Ngoc Duy Tinh Phan, Minh Duc Truong

Abstract In this paper, we aim to introduce a new state called photon-subtracted-then-added squeezing-enhanced coherent state (PSASECS) by multiple photon subtraction and then addition to a squeezing-enhanced coherent state. We investigate the non-Gaussianity and nonclassicality of this new state in detail, including its Wigner function, sub-Poissonian statistics, Q -function, squeezing, and antibunching properties. The obtained results indicate that these non-Gaussian and nonclassical characteristics have been enhanced by appropriately changing between photon subtraction l and photon addition k . Additionally, the non-Gaussianity and nonclassicality of PSASECS are enhanced compared to cases involving only the addition or subtraction of photons. This demonstrates the importance of subtracting and then adding photons to the squeezing-enhanced coherent state, and introducing a significant state for application in quantum optics, particularly in mitigating phase noise fluctuations in quantum devices.

Realization of photon correlations beyond the linear optics limit

Geobae Park, Issei Matsumoto, Takayuki Kiyohara +3 more

Linear optical transformations of multiple single-photon inputs are fundamental for the development of photonic quantum technologies. Various nonclassical correlations can already be observed directly in states generated using only single-photon inputs and linear optics transformations. However, some quantum correlations require additional operations, and states that exhibit such correlations are classified as non-Fock states. Here, we demonstrate the generation of a two-photon three-mode non-Fock state that exhibits conditional quantum coherences that can only be achieved by non-Fock states. We determine the fidelity of the non-Fock state based on experimentally observed conditional visibilities that characterize the state and compare the result to the fidelity bounds for different classes of Fock and non-Fock states. Our experimental verification of the non-Fock character of the state provides insights into the technological requirements needed to achieve nonclassical correlations in multiphoton quantum optics.
