Two Toy Spin Chain Models of Decoherence

Abstract

We solve for the decoherence dynamics of two models in which a simple qubit or Central Spin couples to a bath of spins; the bath is made from a chain of spins. In model 1, the bath spins are Ising spins; in Model 2, they are coupled by transverse spin-spin interactions, and the chain supports spin waves. We look at (i) the case where the Hamiltonian is static, with a constant system/bath coupling, and (ii) where this coupling varies in time.

Decoherence induced by interacting quantum spin baths

We study decoherence induced on a two-level system coupled to a one-dimensional quantum spin chain. We consider the cases where the dynamics of the chain is determined by the Ising, $XY$, or Heisenberg exchange Hamiltonian. This model of quantum baths can be of fundamental importance for the understanding of decoherence in open quantum systems, since it can be experimentally engineered by using atoms in optical lattices. As an example, here we show how to implement a pure dephasing model for a qubit system coupled to an interacting spin bath. We provide results that go beyond the case of a central spin coupled uniformly to all the spins of the bath, in particular showing what happens when the bath enters different phases, or becomes critical; we also study the dependence of the coherence loss on the number of bath spins to which the system is coupled and we describe a coupling-independent regime in which decoherence exhibits universal features, irrespective of the system-environment coupling strength. Finally, we establish a relation between decoherence and entanglement inside the bath. For the Ising and the $XY$ models we are able to give an exact expression for the decay of coherences, while for the Heisenberg bath we resort to the numerical time-dependent density matrix renormalization group.

Induced decoherence and entanglement by interacting quantum spin baths

Cheng-Yan Lai, Jo-Tzu Hung, Chung‐Yu Mou +1 more

The reduced dynamics of a single qubit or two qubits coupled to an interacting quantum spin bath modeled by an $XXZ$ spin chain is investigated. By using the method of a time-dependent density matrix renormalization group $(t\text{-DMRG})$, we go beyond the uniform coupling central spin model and nonperturbatively evaluate the induced decoherence and entanglement. It is shown that both the decoherence and the entanglement strongly depend on the phase of the underlying spin bath. We show that in general, spin baths can induce entanglement for an initially disentangled pair of qubits. Furthermore, when the spin bath is in the ferromagnetic phase because the qubits directly couple to the order parameter, the reduced dynamics shows an oscillatory type behavior. On the other hand, only for the paramagnetic and the antiferromagnetic phases do the initially entangled states suffer from an entanglement sudden death. By calculating the concurrence, the finite disentanglement time is mapped out for all of the phases in the phase diagram of the spin bath.

Simple qubit systems in bosonic baths.

N. Pumulo

The study is focused on the thermal entanglement of spin chains. Chains consisting of two and three qubits are considered. These chains are considered open because they are coupled to bosonic baths at different temperatures. The baths represent the environment. The dynamics of these open systems are examined as are the effects of different parameters - such as bath temperature - on the entanglement of the spins. The measure of entanglement used in these cases is the concurrence. Comparisons are made between a model that assumes a strong spinspin interaction and one that assumes a weak one. In all these cases, analytical solutions for the system dynamics are presented. It is found that at large times, all systems converge to a state that depends only on bath temperature. It is also found that increases in bath temperatures diminish the entanglement between spins and that at high enough temperatures the entanglement vanishes altogether. The time and temperature dependence of the entanglement is different for the two models that are studied.

DECOHERENCE OF A QUANTUM MEMORY COUPLED TO A COLLECTIVE SPIN BATH

RICHARD WALTERS, STEPHEN R. CLARK, DIETER JAKSCH

We study the quantum dynamics of a single qubit coupled to a bath of interacting spins as a model for decoherence in solid state quantum memories. The spin bath is described by the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model and the bath spins are subjected to a transverse magnetic field. We investigate the qubit interacting via either an Ising- or an XY-type coupling term to subsets of bath spins of differing size. The large degree of symmetry of the bath allows us to find parameter regimes where the initial qubit state is revived at well-defined times after the qubit preparation. These times may become independent of the bath size for large baths and thus enable faithful qubit storage even in the presence of strong coupling to a bath. We analyze a large range of parameters and identify those which are best suited for quantum memories. In general we find that a small number of links between qubit and bath spins leads to less decoherence and that systems with Ising coupling between qubit and bath spins are preferable.

Aspects of the decoherence in high-spin environments: Breakdown of the mean-field approximation

Yamen Hamdouni

The study of the decoherence of qubits in spin systems is almost restricted to environments whose constituents are spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ particles. In this paper we consider environments that are composed of particles of higher spin, and we investigate the consequences on the dynamics of a qubit coupled to such baths via Heisenberg $XY$ and Ising interactions. It is shown that, while the short time decay in both cases gets faster as the magnitude of the spin increases, the asymptotic behavior exhibits an improvement of the suppression of the decoherence when the coupling is through Heisenberg $XY$ interactions. In the case of a transverse Ising model, we find that the mean-field approximation breaks down for high values of the spin.

Decoherence through Spin Chains: Toy Model

Marcin Wieśniak

The description of the dynamics of closed quantum systems, governed by the Schroedinger equation at first sight seems incompatible with the Lindblad equation describing open ones. By analyzing closed dynamics of a spin-1/2 chain we reconstruct exponential decays characteristic for the latter model. We identify all necessary ingredients to efficiently model this behavior, such as an infinitely large environment and the coupling to the system weak in comparison to the internal couplings in the bath.
