Abstract

In this work, we investigate the modulational instability of plane wave solutions within a modified Gross-Pitaevskii equation framework. The equation features cubic and quartic nonlinearity. It models the behaviour of quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates in symmetric Bose-Bose mixtures of ultra-dilute cold atoms. Our study demonstrates the pivotal role of the competition between mean-field attractions and quantum fluctuation-induced repulsions. This competition significantly affects the emergence and evolution of modulational instability. By employing linear stability analysis, we identify the essential conditions that lead to modulational instability. We find that the stability of plane wave solutions significantly depends on the interaction among system parameters. Further development of the instability leads to the fragmentation of the BEC into a chain of quantum droplets. We calculated the quantity of quantum droplets generated during the nonlinear phase of the instability. Our analytical results are corroborated by numerical simulations of the modified quasi-1D Gross-Pitaevskii equation. These simulations vividly depict the formation, interaction, and coalescence of droplets during the nonlinear phase of modulational instability. The investigation shows that linear stability analysis of the modified Gross-Pitaevskii equation, considering quantum fluctuations, precisely forecasts modulational instability phenomena across different domains of parameter spaces.

Abstract In this work, we investigate the modulational instability of plane wave solutions within a modified Gross–Pitaevskii equation framework. The equation features cubic and quartic nonlinearity. It models the behaviour of quasi-one-dimensional Bose–Einstein condensates in symmetric Bose-Bose mixtures of ultra-dilute cold atoms. The cases of equal amplitudes in both species, as well as of unequal amplitudes are studied. We calculated the number of quantum droplets generated during the nonlinear stage of the instability. Our analytical results are corroborated by numerical simulations of the modified quasi-1D Gross–Pitaevskii equation. These simulations vividly depict the formation, interaction, and coalescence of droplets during the nonlinear phase of modulational instability. The investigation shows that the linear stability analysis of the modified Gross–Pitaevskii equation, considering quantum fluctuations, precisely predicts the initial stage of modulational instability phenomena across different domains of parameter space. In contrast, the later nonlinear stage, studied through numerical simulations, reveals the formation and nonintegrable dynamics of quantum droplets.

Modulational instability and discrete quantum droplets in a deep quasi-one-dimensional optical lattice

We study the properties of modulational instability and discrete breathers arising in a quasi-one-dimensional discrete Gross-Pitaevskii equation with Lee-Huang-Yang corrections. Conditions for modulation instability and instability regions of nonlinear plane waves are determined in parameter space. We analytically investigate the existence of different quantum droplet solutions, including intersite, onsite, front-like, flat-top, and dark localized modes, using the Page method and variational approach. Their stability is checked using linear stability analyses and numerical simulations. The analytical predictions corroborated with the numerical simulations.

Modulational instability and quantum droplets in a two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate

Sherzod R. Otajonov, E. N. Tsoy, F. Kh. Abdullaev

Modulational instability of a uniform two-dimensional binary Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in the presence of quantum fluctuations is studied. The analysis is based on the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations. It is shown that quantum fluctuations can induce instability when the BEC density is below a threshold. The dependence of the growth rate of modulations on the BEC parameters is found. It is observed that an asymmetry of the interaction parameters and/or initial densities of the components typically decreases the growth rate. Further development of the instability results in the BEC breaking up into a set of quantum droplets. These droplets merge dynamically with each other, so the total number of droplets decreases rapidly. The rate of this decrease is evaluated numerically for different initial parameters.

Impact of Quantum Fluctuations on the Modulational Instability of a Modified Gross-Pitaevskii Equation with Two-Body Interaction

C. G. L. Tiofack, Thierry Blanchard Ekogo, Hermance Moussambi +2 more

Modulational instability conditions for the generation of localized structures in the context of matter waves in Bose-Einstein condensates are investigated analytically and numerically. The model is based on a modified Gross-Pitaevskii equation, which account for the energy dependence of the two-body scattering amplitude. It is shown that the modified term due to the quantum fluctuations modify significantly the modulational instability gain. Direct numerical simulations of the full modified Gross-Pitaevskii equation are performed, and it is found that the modulated plane wave evolves into a train of pulses, which is destroyed at longer times due to the effects of quantum fluctuations.

Investigation of Quantum Liquid in Quasi One Dimensional Bose-Einstein Condensate

Argha Debnath, Ayan Khan

Recent observations of droplets in dipolar and binary Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) motivates us to study the theory of droplet formation in details. Precisely, we are interested in investigating the possibility of droplet formation in a quasi one dimensional geometry. The recent observation have concluded that the droplets are stabilized by the competition between effective mean-filed and beyond mean-field interaction. Hence, it is possible to map the effective equation of motion to a cubic-quartic nonlinear Schr\odinger equation (CQNLSE). We obtain two analytical solutions of the modified Gross-Pitaevskii equation or CQNLSE and based on their stability we investigate the parameter regime for which droplets can form. The effective potential allows us to conclude about the regions of soliton domination and self bound droplet formations.

Modulational instability for a cubic-quintic model of coupled Gross–Pitaevskii equations with residual nonlinearities

Abstract We demonstrate the existence of modulational instability (MI) in both trapped miscible and immiscible two component Bose–Einstein condensates. The study is addressed theoretically and numerically in the framework of one-dimensional coupled Gross–Pitaevskii equations incorporating intra- and interspecies cubic-quintic nonlinearities with higher-order ones. Using the time-dependent variational approach, we derive the new Euler-Langrange equations for the time evolution of the phase and amplitude of the modulational perturbation as well as the effective potential and the instability criteria of the system. We examine the effects of higher order nonlinearities on the instability dynamics of the condensates. We show that the modulational properties of the chosen wave numbers are significantly modified. Direct numerical simulations run by the split step Fourier method confirm the analytical predictions.
