Polarons in the cubic generalized Fröhlich model: Spontaneous symmetry breaking

Abstract

Within the variational polaron equation framework, the Fr\"ohlich model for cubic systems with threefold degenerate electronic bands is numerically solved in the strong-coupling regime for a wide range of its input parameters. By comparing the results to the previously reported ones obtained with the Gaussian ansatz approach, the inadequacy of the latter is uncovered, especially when degenerate bands are present in a system. Moreover, the symmetry groups of polaronic solutions in the cubic generalized Fr\"ohlich model without spin-orbit coupling are investigated: We provide and discuss a phase diagram of symmetry groups of ground-state polarons, showing spontaneous symmetry breaking. While the cubic symmetry of the three-band degenerate model Hamiltonian corresponds to the full octahedral group ${O}_{h}$, lowest-energy polarons possess either ${D}_{4h}$ or ${D}_{3d}$ point groups. This phase diagram bears some similarities but differs nevertheless from the one that is obtained by the straight analysis of the band effective masses. The obtained results will provide a firm ground for further exploration of the generalized Fr\"ohlich model and will likely be applicable beyond the model's inherent approximations.

Variational polaron equations applied to the anisotropic Fröhlich model

Vasilii Vasilchenko, Andriy Zhugayevych, Xavier Gonze

Starting from recent advances in the first-principles modeling of polarons, variational polaron equations in the strong-coupling adiabatic approximation are formulated in Bloch space. In this framework, polaron formation energy as well as individual electron, phonon, and electron-phonon contributions are obtained. We suggest an efficient gradient-based optimization algorithm and apply these equations to the generalized Fr\"ohlich model with anisotropic nondegenerate electronic bands, both in two- and three-dimensional cases. The effect of the divergence of Fr\"ohlich electron-phonon matrix elements at $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$ point is treated analytically, improving the convergence with respect to the sampling in reciprocal space. The whole methodology is validated by obtaining the known asymptotic solution of the standard Fr\"ohlich model in isotropic scenario and also by comparing our results with the Gaussian ansatz approach, showing the difference between the numerically exact and Gaussian trial wavefunctions. Additionally, decomposition of the energy into individual terms allows one to recover the Pekar's 1:2:3:4 theorem, which is shown to be valid even in the anisotropic case. We expect that the improvements in the formalism and numerical implementation will be applicable beyond the large polaron hypothesis inherent to Fr\"ohlich model.

All-coupling theory for the Fröhlich polaron

Fabian Grusdt

The Fr\"ohlich model describes the interaction of a mobile impurity with a surrounding bath of phonons which leads to the formation of a quasiparticle, the polaron. In this paper an efficient renormalization group approach is presented which provides a description of Fr\"ohlich polarons in all regimes ranging from weak to strong coupling. The extended renormalization group approach introduced here is capable of predicting ground state properties for arbitrarily small impurity masses. This allows us to obtain the full phase diagram of the Fr\"ohlich Hamiltonian, which we present concretely for the Bogoliubov-Fr\"ohlich model originally introduced to describe ultracold impurities in a Bose-Einstein condensate. For this model, whose regime of validity in ultracold quantum gases is the subject of debate, we benchmark our method by comparison of the ground state energy to recent diagrammatic quantum Monte Carlo calculations.

Polaron effective mass inddimensions within and beyond the generalized Gaussian approximation

Gurjav Ganbold, Гарий Владимирович Ефимов

The effective mass of the Fröhlich polaron model in d spatial dimensions is obtained within the Gaussian-equivalent representation, that is, within a suitably rearranged perturbative path-integral approach, whose leading order already takes care of all Gaussian fluctuations. In doing so, the authors extend their earlier investigations ( Phys. Rev. B 50 3733 (1994)) of the polaron ground-state energy. Analytical expressions for the effective mass are derived in the weak- and strong-coupling limit. In the intermediate-coupling regime, the effective mass is calculated numerically for the cases of two and three dimensions. The new results are compared with previously known data.

Bose polarons in ultracold atoms in one dimension: beyond the Fröhlich paradigm

Fabian Grusdt, Gregory E Astrakharchik, Eugene Demler

Mobile impurity atoms immersed in Bose–Einstein condensates provide a new platform for exploring Bose polarons. Recent experimental advances in the field of ultracold atoms make it possible to realize such systems with highly tunable microscopic parameters and to explore equilibrium and dynamical properties of polarons using a rich toolbox of atomic physics. In this paper we present a detailed theoretical analysis of Bose polarons in one-dimensional systems of ultracold atoms. By combining a non-perturbative renormalization group approach with numerically exact diffusion Monte Carlo calculations we obtain not only detailed numerical results over a broad range of parameters but also qualitative understanding of different regimes of the system. We find that an accurate description of Bose polarons requires the inclusion of two-phonon scattering terms which go beyond the commonly used Fröhlich model. Furthermore we show that when the Bose gas is in the strongly interacting regime, one needs to include interactions between the phonon modes. We use several theoretical approaches to calculate the polaron energy and its effective mass. The former can be measured using radio-frequency spectroscopy and the latter can be studied experimentally using impurity oscillations in a harmonic trapping potential. We compare our theoretical results for the effective mass to the experiments by Catani et al (2012 Phys. Rev. A 85 023623). In the weak-to-intermediate coupling regimes we obtain excellent quantitative agreement between theory and experiment, without any free fitting parameter. We supplement our analysis by full dynamical simulations of polaron oscillations in a shallow trapping potential. We also use our renormalization group approach to analyze the full phase diagram and identify regions that support repulsive and attractive polarons, as well as multi-particle bound states.

Diagrammatic Monte Carlo study of Fröhlich polaron dispersion in two and three dimensions

Thomas Hahn, Sergei N. Klimin, Jacques Tempere +2 more

We present results for the solution of the large polaron Fr\"ohlich Hamiltonian in 3 dimensions (3D) and 2 dimensions (2D) obtained via the diagrammatic Monte Carlo (DMC) method. Our implementation is based on the approach by Mishchenko [A. S. Mishchenko et al., Phys. Rev. B 62, 6317 (2000)]. Polaron ground state energies and effective polaron masses are successfully benchmarked with data obtained using Feynman's path integral formalism. By comparing 3D and 2D data, we verify the analytically exact scaling relations for energies and effective masses from $3\mathrm{D}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}2\mathrm{D}$, which provides a stringent test for the quality of DMC predictions. The accuracy of our results is further proven by providing values for the exactly known coefficients in weak- and strong-coupling expansions. Moreover, we compute polaron dispersion curves which are validated with analytically known lower and upper limits in the small-coupling regime and verify the first-order expansion results for larger couplings, thus disproving previous critiques on the apparent incompatibility of DMC with analytical results and furnishing useful reference for a wide range of coupling strengths.
