Abstract

We investigate the quantum spin-1/2 zigzag chain with frustrated ${J}_{1}\ensuremath{-}{J}_{2}$ Heisenberg interactions, incorporating additional off-diagonal exchange interactions known as the $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$ term, both with and without an applied magnetic field. Based on the density-matrix renormalization group calculation, we map out the ground-state phase diagram that shows a variety of magnetic and nonmagnetic phases including multicritical points and several exactly solvable points. Upon introducing a finite $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$ term, we observe the persistent dimer-singlet state of the ${J}_{1}\ensuremath{-}{J}_{2}$ Heisenberg model, sustaining a nonzero spin gap, while also hosting a gapless nonmagnetic excitation that manifests in the substantial zero-energy peak in the nematic dynamical structure factor. This gapless peak-mode, remaining almost as a fluctuation to the ground state, induces a dilute but robust concentration of nematicity on top of singlets on dimers, which we call the nematic singlet-dimer phase. When the whole nematic excited mode condenses and replaces the singlet, the nematic-dimer phase transforms into the Ising-type ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic long-range orders. The $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$ term spontaneously selects magnetic easy axes, and their orientations dictate the type of magnetic order under geometric frustration effects as predicted by Landau's mean-field theory. These theoretical findings provide insights into the exotic low-temperature phase observed in ${\mathrm{YbCuS}}_{2}$, characterized by gapless excitations and seemingly nonmagnetic behavior.

Frustration-induced Quantum Spin Liquid Behavior in the s = 1/2 Random-bond Heisenberg Antiferromagnet on the Zigzag Chain

Kazuki Uematsu, Toshiya Hikihara, Hikaru Kawamura

Recent studies have revealed that the randomness-induced quantum spin liquid (QSL)-like state is stabilized in certain frustrated quantum magnets in two and three dimensions. In order to clarify the nature of this gapless QSL-like state, we investigate both zero- and finite-temperature properties of the random-bond one-dimensional (1D) $s=12$ Heisenberg model with the competing nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic interactions, $J_1$ and $J_2$, by means of the exact diagonalization, density-matrix renormalization-group and Hams--de Raedt methods. We find that, on increasing the frustration $J_2$, the gapless nonmagnetic state stabilized in the unfrustrated model with $J_2=0$, the {\it unfrustrated\} random-singlet (RS) state, exhibits a phase transition into different gapless nonmagnetic state, the {\it frustrated\} RS state. This frustrated RS state in 1D has properties quite similar to the randomness-induced QSL-like state recently identified in 2D and 3D frustrated magnets exhibiting the $T$-linear low-temperature ($T$) specific heat, while the unfrustrated RS state is more or less specific to the unfrustrated 1D system exhibiting the $\sim 1(\log T)^3$ low-$T$ specific heat. Universal features and the robustness against perturbations of the frustrated RS state are emphasized.

A dimerized and frustrated spin model with alternating ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchanges: investigating quantum phases of Heisenberg spin chains with s = 1/2 and 1

Shaon Sahoo, V. M. L. Durga Prasad Goli, Diptiman Sen +1 more

We study Heisenberg spin-1/2 and spin-1 chains with alternating ferromagnetic ($J_1^F$) and antiferromagnetic ($J_1^A$) nearest-neighbor interactions and ferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interaction ($J_2^F$). In this model frustration is induced by the non-zero $J_2^F$ and the effect of dimerization is realized by changing the strength of $J_1^A$ for a fixed value of $J_1^F$. The model with site spin $s$ behaves like a Haldane spin chain with site spin 2$s$ in the limit of vanishing $J_2^F$ and large $J_1^F/J_1^A$. We show that the exact ground state of the model can be found along a line in the parameter space. The phase diagram in the space of $J_1^A-J_2^F$ is determined using numerical techniques complemented by some analytical calculations. A number of quantities, including the ground state spin, energy gap, structure factor, entanglement entropy, and zero temperature magnetization, are studied to understand the complete phase diagram. An interesting and application-wise important feature of this model is that it exhibits a macroscopic magnetization jump in the presence of a magnetic field; we study this using an effective Hamiltonian.

Ground-state phase diagram of a spin- 12 frustrated ferromagnetic XXZ chain: Haldane dimer phase and gapped/gapless chiral phases

Shunsuke Furukawa, Masahiro Sato, Shigeki Onoda +1 more

The ground-state phase diagram of a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ XXZ chain with competing ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor (${J}_{1}<0$) and antiferromagnetic second-neighbor (${J}_{2}>0$) exchange couplings is studied by means of the infinite time evolving block decimation algorithm and effective field theories. For the SU(2)-symmetric (Heisenberg) case, we show that the nonmagnetic phase in the range $\ensuremath{-}4<{J}_{1}/{J}_{2}<0$ has a small but finite ferromagnetic dimer order. We argue that this spontaneous dimer order is associated with effective spin-1 degrees of freedom on dimerized bonds, which collectively form a valence bond solid state as in the spin-1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain (the Haldane spin chain). We thus call this phase the Haldane dimer phase. With easy-plane anisotropy, the model exhibits a variety of phases including the vector chiral phase with gapless excitations and the even-parity dimer and N\'eel phases with gapped excitations, in addition to the Haldane dimer phase. Furthermore, we show the existence of gapped phases with coexisting orders in narrow regions that intervene between the gapless chiral phase and any one of Haldane dimer, even-parity dimer, and N\'eel phases. Possible implications for quasi-one-dimensional edge-sharing cuprates are discussed.

Dynamical quadrupole structure factor of frustrated ferromagnetic chain

Hiroaki Onishi

We investigate the dynamical quadrupole structure factor of a spin-1/2 J1-J2 Heisenberg chain with competing ferromagnetic J1 and antiferromagnetic J2 in a magnetic field by exploiting density-matrix renormalization group techniques. In a field-induced spin nematic regime, we observe gapless excitations at q=π according to quasi-long-range antiferro-quadrupole correlations. The gapless excitation mode has a quadratic form at the saturation, while it changes into a linear dispersion as the magnetization decreases.

Level crossing, spin structure factor and quantum phases of the frustrated spin-1/2 chain with first and second neighbor exchange

Manoranjan Kumar, Aslam Parvej, Z. G. Soos

The spin-1/2 chain with isotropic Heisenberg exchange J1, J2 > 0 between first and second neighbors is frustrated for either sign of J1. Its quantum phase diagram has critical points at fixed J1/J2 between gapless phases with nondegenerate ground state (GS) and quasi-long-range order (QLRO) and gapped phases with doubly degenerate GS and spin correlation functions of finite range. In finite chains, exact diagonalization (ED) estimates critical points as level crossing of excited states. GS spin correlations enter in the spin structure factor S(q) that diverges at wave vector qm in QLRO(q(m)) phases with periodicity 2π/q(m) but remains finite in gapped phases. S(q(m)) is evaluated using ED and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations. Level crossing and the magnitude of S(q(m)) are independent and complementary probes of quantum phases, based respectively on excited and ground states. Both indicate a gapless QLRO(π/2) phase between -1.2 < J1/|J2| < 0.45. Numerical results and field theory agree well for quantum critical points at small frustration J2 but disagree in the sector of weak exchange J1 between Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains on sublattices of odd and even-numbered sites.

Phase diagram of the Kondo model on the zigzag ladder

Matthias Peschke, Lena-Marie Woelk, Michael Potthoff

The effect of next-nearest-neighbor hopping ${t}_{2}$ on the ground-state phase diagram of the one-dimensional Kondo lattice is studied with density-matrix renormalization-group techniques and by comparing with the phase diagram of the classical-spin variant of the same model. For a finite ${t}_{2}$, i.e., for a zigzag-ladder geometry, indirect antiferromagnetic interactions between the localized spins are geometrically frustrated. We demonstrate that ${t}_{2}$ at the same time triggers several magnetic phases which are absent in the model with nearest-neighbor hopping only. For strong $J$, we find a transition from antiferromagnetic to incommensurate magnetic short-range order, which can be understood entirely in the classical-spin picture. For weaker $J$, a spin-dimerized phase emerges, which spontaneously breaks the discrete translation symmetry. The phase is not accessible to perturbative means but is explained, on a qualitative level, by the classical-spin model as well. Spin dimerization alleviates magnetic frustration and is interpreted as a key to understand the emergence of quasi-long-range spiral magnetic order, which is found at weaker couplings. The phase diagram at weak $J$, with gapless quasi-long-range order on top of the twofold degenerate spin-dimerized ground state, competing with a nondegenerate phase with gapped spin (and charge) excitations, is unconventional and eludes an effective low-energy spin-only theory.
