Abstract

We classify $E_2$ condensable algebras in a modular tensor category $\mathcal{C}$ up to 2-Morita equivalence. From a physical perspective, this is equivalent to providing a criterion for when different $E_2$ condensable algebras result in the same condensed topological phase in a 2d anyon condensation process. By considering the left and right centers of $E_1$ condensable algebras in $\mathcal{C}$, we exhaust all 2-Morita equivalent $E_2$ condensable algebras in $\mathcal{C}$ and provide a method to recover $E_1$ condensable algebras from 2-Morita equivalent $E_2$ condensable algebras. We also prove that intersecting Lagrangian algebras in $\mathcal{C} \boxtimes \overline{\mathcal{C}}$ with its left and right components generates all 2-Morita equivalent $E_2$ condensable algebras in $\mathcal{C}$. This paper establishes a complete interplay between $E_1$ condensable algebras in $\mathcal{C}$, 2-Morita equivalent $E_2$ condensable algebras in $\mathcal{C}$, and Lagrangian algebras in $\mathcal{C} \boxtimes \overline{\mathcal{C}}$. The relations between different condensable algebras can be translated into their module categories, which correspond to domain walls in topological orders. We introduce a two-step condensation process and study the fusion of domain walls. We also show that an automorphism of an $E_2$ condensable algebra may lead to a nontrivial braided autoequivalence in the condensed phase. As concrete examples, we interpret the categories of quantum doubles of finite groups. We also discuss examples beyond group symmetries. Moreover, our results can be generalized to Witt-equivalent modular tensor categories.

Classification of Gapped Domain Walls in 2+1D Topological Orders through 2-Morita Equivalence

Rongge Xu, Holiverse Yang

Abstract We classify condensable E 2-algebras in a modular tensor category C up to 2-Morita equivalence. Physically, this classification provides an explicit criterion to determine when distinct condensable E 2-algebras yield the same condensed topological phase under a two-dimensional anyon condensation process. The relations between different condensable algebras can be translated into their module categories, interpreted physically as gapped domain walls in topological orders. As concrete examples, we interpret the categories of quantum doubles of finite groups and examples beyond group symmetries. Our framework fully elucidates the interplay among condensable E 1-algebras in C , condensable E 2-algebras in C up to 2-Morita equivalence, and Lagrangian algebras in C ⊠ C ¯ .

Anyon condensation and tensor categories

Liang Kong

Instead of studying anyon condensation in various concrete models, we take a bootstrap approach by considering an abstract situation, in which an anyon condensation happens in a 2-d topological phase with anyonic excitations given by a modular tensor category C; and the anyons in the condensed phase are given by another modular tensor category D. By a bootstrap analysis, we derive a relation between anyons in D-phase and anyons in C-phase from natural physical requirements. It turns out that the vacuum (or the tensor unit) A in D-phase is necessary to be a connected commutative separable algebra in C, and the category D is equivalent to the category of local A-modules as modular tensor categories. This condensation also produces a gapped domain wall with wall excitations given by the category of A-modules in C. A more general situation is also studied in this paper. We will also show how to determine such algebra A from the initial and final data. Multi-condensations and 1-d condensations will also be briefly discussed. Examples will be given in the toric code model, Kitaev quantum double models, Levin–Wen types of lattice models and some chiral topological phases.

Condensation completion and defects in 2 + 1 D topological orders

Gen Yue, Longye Wang, Tian Lan

We review the condensation completion of a modular tensor category $\mathcal{C}$, which yields a fusion 2-category $Σ\mathcal{C}$ of separable algebras, bimodules over algebras and bimodule maps in $\mathcal{C}$. Physically, $Σ\mathcal{C}$ is the fusion 2-category of codimension-1 defects, codimension-2 defects and instantons in the $2+1$D topological order $\mathcal{C}$. We realize the rough-rough wall and $e$-$m$ exchange wall in Toric Code model on the lattice by deforming the Hamiltonian based on the corresponding algebraic data. We apply condensation completion to Toric Code, $3\mathbf{F}$, two-laryer semion and $\mathbb{Z}_4$ topological orders, and explicitly enumerate their $1$d and $0$d defects along with fusion rules. We also mention other applications of condensation completion: alternative interpretations of condensation completion of a braided fusion category; condensation completion of the category of symmetry charges and its correspondence to gapped phases with symmetry; for a topological order $\mathcal{C}$, one can find all gapped boundaries of the stacking of $\mathcal{C}$ with its time-reversal conjugate through computing the condensation completion of $\mathcal{C}$.

Weak Hopf tube algebra for domain walls between 2d gapped phases of Turaev-Viro TQFTs

Zhian Jia, Sheng Tan

A bstract We investigate domain walls between 2 d gapped phases of Turaev-Viro type topological quantum field theories (TQFTs) by constructing domain wall tube algebras. We begin by analyzing the domain wall tube algebra associated with bimodule categories, and then extend the construction to multimodule categories over N base fusion categories. We prove that the resulting tube algebra is naturally equipped with a C ∗ weak Hopf algebra structure. We show that topological excitations localized on domain walls are classified by representations of the corresponding domain wall tube algebra, in the sense that the functor category of bimodules admits a fusion-preserving embedding into the representation category of the domain wall tube algebra. We further establish the folding trick and Morita theory in this context. Then, most crucially, we provide a rigorous construction of the Drinfeld quantum double from weak Hopf boundary tube algebras using a skew-pairing, and establish an isomorphism between domain wall tube algebra and Drinfeld quantum double of boundary tube algebras. Motivated by the correspondence between the domain wall tube algebra and the quantum double of the boundary tube algebras, we introduce the notion of an N -tuple algebra and demonstrate how it arises in the multimodule domain wall setting. Finally, we consider defects between two domain walls, showing that such defects can be characterized by representations of a domain wall defect tube algebra. We briefly outline how these defects can be systematically treated within this representation-theoretic framework.

Disentangling modular Walker-Wang models via fermionic invertible boundaries

Andreas Bauer

Walker-Wang models are fixed-point models of topological order in $3+1$ dimensions constructed from a braided fusion category. For a modular input category $\mathcal{M}$, the model itself is invertible and is believed to be in a trivial topological phase, whereas its standard boundary is supposed to represent a $(2+1$)-dimensional chiral phase. In this work we explicitly show triviality of the model by constructing an invertible domain wall to vacuum as well as a disentangling generalized local unitary circuit in the case where $\mathcal{M}$ is a Drinfeld center. Moreover, we show that if we allow for fermionic (auxiliary) degrees of freedom inside the disentangling domain wall or circuit, the model becomes trivial for a larger class of modular fusion categories, namely, those in the Witt classes generated by the Ising unitary modular tensor category. We also discuss general (noninvertible) boundaries of general Walker-Wang models and describe a simple axiomatization of extended topological quantum field theory in terms of tensors.
