Abstract

Reference-frame-independent (RFI) quantum key distribution (QKD) presents promising advantages, especially for mobile-platform-based implementations, as it eliminates the need for active reference frame calibration. While RFI-QKD has been explored in various studies, limitations in key rate and distance persist due to finite data collection. In this study, we experimentally demonstrate an improved RFI-QKD protocol proposed by Zhu et al. [Opt. Lett.47, 4219 (2022)10.1364/OL.470558], featuring a statistical quantity for bounding information leaked to Eve that exhibits more insensitivity to statistical fluctuations and more robustness to variations in the reference frame. Taking into account finite-size considerations and potential general attacks, RFI-QKD is implemented over a distance of 175 km in this work. We believe that our study extends the communication distance achievable by RFI-QKD, thereby constituting a notable advancement for its practical application.

Experimental demonstration of 4-state reference-frame-independent quantum key distribution over 200km

Ziran Xie, Tian, Zhiyu, Shi‐Hai Sun

Reference frame independent quantum key distribution (RFI-QKD) has gained widespread attention due to the unique advantage for practical application, as it circumvents the need for active reference frame alignment within the system. However, in comparison to the standard BB84 protocol, the original 6-state RFI protocol requires a greater number of quantum states to be operated by Alice and Bob, which is an aspect that merits optimization. In this work, we propose a 4-state RFI protocol and illustrate that Alice and Bob each require only four quantum states to perform channel estimation that remains independent of reference frame deviation, which can proficiently reduce the system complexity. Furthermore, through numerical simulations taking the finite-size key effect into consideration, we show that 4-state RFI protocol can achieve a secure key rate and transmission distance on par with the original 6-state RFI protocol. Finally, a experiment over 200 km is inplemented to conducted the feasibility of our scheme. We believe that our protocol can streamline the implementation of RFI-QKD and thereby contribute to the practical advancement of RFI-QKD.

Improved reference-frame-independent quantum key distribution

Jian-Rong Zhu, Rong Wang, Chun-Mei Zhang

Reference-frame-independent quantum key distribution (RFI-QKD) can generate secure keys between two remote peers with an unknown and slowly drifted reference frame. It adopts a statistical quantity C independent of the rotation of the reference frame to estimate the eavesdropper’s knowledge. However, in practical scenarios, the estimation of C should be completed with data collected in a short period of time, since the variation of the reference frame during the run will smear its correlations. In this paper, we propose to improve the performance of RFI-QKD with a new, to the best of our knowledge, statistical quantity R , which is less sensitive to statistical fluctuations and more robust to the variation of the reference frame, and obtain an analytical bound to estimate the eavesdropper’s knowledge. Simulation results show that the performance of RFI-QKD in the non-asymptotic case can be significantly promoted, which is very promising in practical QKD systems. Furthermore, we apply the new statistical quantity R to the RFI measurement-device-independent QKD (RFI-MDI-QKD) protocol and demonstrate that significant improvement can also be obtained in RFI-MDI-QKD.

Reference-Frame-Independent Measurement-Device-Independent Quantum Key Distribution Over 200 km of Optical Fiber

Xingyu Zhou, Hua-Jian Ding, Ming-Shuo Sun +5 more

Reference-frame-independent (RFI) measurement-device-independent (MDI) quantum key distribution (QKD) is immune to all detector side-channel attacks and is insensitive to slow drifts of reference frames; thus, it is a promising candidate for the realization of long-distance quantum secure communications. However, its practical performance is predominantly limited by the finite-data-size effect compared with standard MDI QKD. By combining the collective constraint and joint-study strategy with our parameter estimation processes for the RFI-MDI-QKD protocol, we reduce the influence of the finite-data-size effect and substantially improve the protocol's performance under realistic experimental conditions. Furthermore, a proof-of-principle experimental demonstration is conducted, and a transmission distance of up to 200 km is achieved. Therefore, this study represents a further step toward long-distance quantum secure communications.

Reference-frame-independent quantum key distribution over 250 km of optical fiber

Xin Liu, Di Luo, Zhicheng Luo +3 more

The reference-frame-independent quantum key distribution (RFI QKD) protocol enables QKD systems to function effectively despite slowly varying reference frames, offering a distinct advantage in practical scenarios, particularly in mobile platforms. In this study, we successfully distribute secure key bits over a 250-km optical fiber distance by developing an RFI QKD system with a repetition rate of 150 MHz. Benefiting from high repetition rate, we achieve a finite-key secret key rate of 49.65 bit/s at a distance of 200 km, which is more than 3 times higher than state-of-the-art systems. Our work dramatically extends the transmission distance and enhances the secret key rate of RFI QKD, significantly promoting its practical application.

Boosting the Performance of Reference-Frame- Independent Measurement-Device-Independent Quantum Key Distribution

Jing-Yang Liu, Xingyu Zhou, Chunhui Zhang +4 more

Among all present quantum key distribution protocols, the reference-frame-independent measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (RFI-MDI-QKD) is standing out due to its high security and practicability, since it can not only remove all detector-side-channel attacks, but also relax the requirement of reference-frame calibrations. However, till today, the performance degradation of RFI-MDI-QKD caused by finite-size effects is one of the biggest impediment to its practical implementations. Here, we propose an enhanced RFI-MDI-QKD protocol which is highly resistant to the finite-size effect and immensely boosts both the key rate and transmission distance. As a result, it can even surpass the most advanced MDI-QKD protocol under larger rotation angles of reference frames. Furthermore, with the state-of-the-art RFI-MDI-QKD setup, we successfully carry out a proof-of-principle experimental demonstration at a record distance of 300km. The experiments under non-ideal condition verify the advantage and robustness of our present work.
