Abstract

Quantum computing has emerged as a transformative tool for future data management. Classical problems in database domains, including query optimization, data integration, and transaction management, have recently been addressed using quantum computing techniques. This tutorial aims to establish the theoretical foundation essential for enhancing methodologies and practical implementations in this line of research. Moreover, this tutorial takes a forward-looking approach by delving into recent strides in quantum internet technologies and the nonlocality theory. We aim to shed light on the uncharted territory of future data systems tailored for the quantum internet.

Quantum Data Management in the NISQ Era: Extended Version

Rihan Hai, Shih-Han Hung, Tim J. Coopmans +2 more

Quantum computing has emerged as a promising tool for transforming the landscape of computing technology. Recent efforts have applied quantum techniques to classical database challenges, such as query optimization, data integration, index selection, and transaction management. In this paper, we shift focus to a critical yet underexplored area: data management for quantum computing. We are currently in the noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) era, where qubits, while promising, are fragile and still limited in scale. After differentiating quantum data from classical data, we outline current and future data management paradigms in the NISQ era and beyond. We address the data management challenges arising from the emerging demands of near-term quantum computing. Our goal is to chart a clear course for future quantum-oriented data management research, establishing it as a cornerstone for the advancement of quantum computing in the NISQ era.

How Can Quantum Computing and Databases Meet "in Practice"? From Algorithms to Systems

Hanwen Liu, Yiran Li, Ibrahim Sabek +2 more

Quantum computing has recently moved from a theoretical concept to a transformative and increasingly accessible computational paradigm. These developments sparked growing interest in the database community along two complementary directions: applying quantum techniques to improve database tasks, and leveraging DBMS principles to support quantum workloads. This three-hour tutorial provides a bidirectional, practice-oriented treatment of this intersection, covering quantum foundations, optimization algorithms, a systematic survey of Quantum-for-DB and DB-for-Quantum research, and end-to-end system integration with a real DBMS. The tutorial includes hands-on demonstrations using quantum simulators and real quantum hardware. We summarize open challenges and research opportunities for practical real-world deployment.

Opportunities for Quantum Acceleration of Databases: Optimization of Queries and Transaction Schedules

Umut Çalıkyılmaz, Sven Groppe, Jinghua Groppe +6 more

The capabilities of quantum computers, such as the number of supported qubits and maximum circuit depth, have grown exponentially in recent years. Commercially relevant applications that take advantage of quantum computing are expected to be available soon. In this paper, we shed light on the possibilities of accelerating database tasks using quantum computing with examples of optimizing queries and transaction schedules and present some open challenges for future studies in the field.

Quantum Machine Learning: Foundation, New Techniques, and Opportunities for Database Research

Tobias Winker, Sven Groppe, Valter Uotila +4 more

In the last few years, the field of quantum computing has experienced remarkable progress. The prototypes of quantum computers already exist and have been made available to users through cloud services (e.g., IBM Q experience, Google quantum AI, or Xanadu quantum cloud). While fault-tolerant and large-scale quantum computers are not available yet (and may not be for a long time, if ever), the potential of this new technology is undeniable. Quantum algorithms have the proven ability to either outperform classical approaches for several tasks, or are impossible to be efficiently simulated by classical means under reasonable complexity-theoretic assumptions. Even imperfect current-day technology is speculated to exhibit computational advantages over classical systems. Recent research is using quantum computers to solve machine learning tasks. Meanwhile, the database community has already successfully applied various machine learning algorithms for data management tasks, so combining the fields seems to be a promising endeavour. However, quantum machine learning is a new research field for most database researchers. In this tutorial, we provide a fundamental introduction to quantum computing and quantum machine learning and show the potential benefits and applications for database research. In addition, we demonstrate how to apply quantum machine learning to the join order optimization problem in databases.

Quantum Computing for Databases: A Short Survey and Vision

Gongsheng Yuan, Jiaheng Lu, Yuxing Chen +5 more

With the development of quantum computing, significant advancements have been made since the 1980s, leading to the birth of quantum computers and sparking widespread enthusiasm in this emerging field. While quantum computing is still in its early stages of development, researchers are increasingly drawn to its magic power and have identified numerous compelling applications across various domains, ranging from cryptography, query optimization, and machine learning. Notably, one of the most promising applications lies within the realm of database management systems, giving rise to quantum computing for databases, which holds the potential to offer substantial advantages over classical databases, particularly in terms of query processing speed and efficiency, as well as saving memory space. This vision paper aims to provide an overview of the current research challenges and opportunities of quantum computing for the field of databases, as well as outline the potential for the development of a quantum multi-modal database.
