Abstract

In this paper, we have investigated three external fields interacting with the four-level atomic system described by the density-matrix approach. The atomic system exhibits left-handedness with zero absorption and large negative refractive index. Varying the parameters of the three external fields, the properties of zero absorption and large negative refractive index from the atomic system remain unvarying. Our scheme proposes an approach to obtain a negative refractive medium with zero absorption. The zero absorption property of the atomic system may be used to amplify the evanescent waves that have been lost in the imaging by traditional lenses, and a slab fabricated by the left-handed atomic system may be an ideal candidate for designing perfect lenses.

Left-handedness without absorption in the four-level Y-type atomic medium

In this paper we have investigated three external fields interacting with the four-level Y-type atomic system described by the density-matrix approach. The results show that left-handedness with zero absorption is achieved. The zero absorption property displays the possibility of manipulation by varying the phase and the intensity of the coupling field. Also, the zero absorption property may be used to amplify the evanescent waves that have been lost in imaging by traditional lenses. We propose an approach to obtain a negative refractive medium with zero absorption and the possibility of enhanceingthe imaging resolution in realizing ‘superlenses’.

Negative refractive index in a four-level atomic system

Zhen-Qing Zhang, Zhengdong Liu, Shun‐Cai Zhao +3 more

A closed four-level system in atomic vapour is proposed, which is made to possess left handedness by using the technique of quantum coherence. The density matrix method is utilized in view of the rotating-wave approximation and the effect of a local field in dense gas. The numerical simulation result shows that the negative permittivity and the negative permeability of the medium can be achieved simultaneously (i.e. the left handedness) in a wider frequency band under appropriate parameter conditions. Furthermore, when analysing the dispersion property of the left-handed material, we can find that the probe beam propagation can be controlled from superluminal to subluminal, or vice versa via changing the detuning of the probe field.

Electromagnetically induced negative refractive index in a V-type four-level atomic system

张红军, 钮月萍, 龚尚庆

We propose a scheme for realizing negative refractive index in a V-type four-level atomic system. It is shown that the negative refractive index can be achieved in a wide frequency band based on the effect of quantum coherence. It is also found that the frequency band of negative refractive index and the absorption property of left-handed material are manipulated by the pump and control fields. Furthermore, left-handed material with reduced absorption is possible by choosing appropriate parameters. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Negative refraction with absorption suppressed by electromagneticly induced transparency in a left-handed atomic system

Shun-Cai Zhao

This paper intends to realize negative refraction with absorption suppressed by the electromagneticly induced transparency(EIT) in a dense four-level atomic system. Without the two equal transition frequencies responding to the probe field, the atomic system displays a negative refraction with the simultaneously negative permittivity and negative permeability(Left-handedness). The response of the probe field is amplified and propagates transparency in some frequency extents. Therefore, our aim for searching the low-loss negative refraction can be achieved in the scheme, given the main applied limitation of the negative refractive materials is the large amount of dissipation and absorption. However, an excessive signal field intensity would increase the absorption near the resonance in our scheme.

Electromagnetically Induced Left Handedness in Y-type Four Level Atomic System

Zhang Zhen-qinga, Zhao Shun-caia

The quantum system with an interaction between a closed Y-type four-level atom and multi-mode light fields is adopted to possess left handedness by means of the technique of quantum coherence. In the representation of interaction, the density matrix method is utilized in view of the rotating-wave approximation and the di-pole approximation. The conclusion of the numerical simulation shows that under the appropriate parameter conditions, the medium can achieve negative permittivity and negative permeability simultaneously (i.e. the left handedness effect happens and the left-handed material is realized.) In the condition of the weak probe field, when the Rabi frequency of probe light increases, the frequency range of the medium to achieve its left-handed effect decreases and the refractive index and absorption coefficient will also changed correspondingly. The medium to affect light absorption and gain in the conditions of the establishment of left -handed effect are also discussed. The paper can be concluded that, in the conditions of weak probe field, the electro-magnetic induction can be used to achieve the left-handed effect of the medium, which extends the implementation of left-handed materials in the experiment, and extends the application field of electro-magnetic induction.

We suggest a scheme for obtaining negative refraction with low absorption in a left-handed atomic system.Under the the appropriate conditions, the atomic system displays negative refraction with negative permittivity and permeability(Left-handedness)in a common frequency range, simultaneously. And the imaginary parts of permittivity and permeability show transparently propagate in the same frequency range. Finally, the negative refraction show low absorption due to the EIT effect, and the figure of merit demonstrated this in this resonant atomic system.
