Abstract

Directly evaluated enhanced perturbative continuous unitary transformations (deepCUTs) are used to calculate non-perturbatively extrapolated numerical data for the ground-state energy and the energy gap. The data coincide with numerical evaluations of the truncated perturbative series and provide robust extrapolations beyond the perturbative regime. We develop a general scheme to extract quantum-critical properties from the deepCUT data based on critical scaling and a strict correspondence between the truncation used for deepCUT and the length scale of correlations at the critical point. We apply our approach to transverse-field Ising models (TFIMs) as paradigmatic systems for quantum phase transitions of various universality classes depending on the lattice geometry and the choice of antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic coupling. In particular, we focus on the quantum phase diagram of the bilayer antiferromagnetic TFIM on the triangular lattice with an Ising-type interlayer coupling. Without a field, the model is known to host a classically disordered ground state, and in the limit of decoupled layers it exhibits the 3d-XY ‘order by disorder’ transition of the corresponding single-layer model. Our starting point for the unknown parts of the phase diagram is a high-order perturbative calculation about the limit of isolated dimers where the model is in a gapped phase.

Quantum criticality and excitations of a long-range anisotropic XY chain in a transverse field

Patrick Adelhardt, Jan Alexander Koziol, Andreas Schellenberger +1 more

The critical breakdown of a one-dimensional quantum magnet with long-range interactions is studied by investigating the high-field polarized phase of the anisotropic XY model in a transverse field for the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic cases. While for the limiting case of the isotropic long-range XY model we can extract the elementary one-quasiparticle dispersion analytically and calculate two-quasiparticle excitation energies quantitatively in a numerical fashion, for the long-range Ising limit as well as in the intermediate regime we use perturbative continuous unitary transformations on white graphs in combination with classical Monte Carlo simulations for the graph embedding to extract high-order series expansions in the thermodynamic limit. This enables us to determine the quantum-critical breakdown of the high-field polarized phase by analyzing the gap closing including associated critical exponents and multiplicative logarithmic corrections. In addition, for the ferromagnetic isotropic XY model we determined the critical exponents $z$ and $\ensuremath{\nu}$ analytically by a bosonic quantum-field theory.

Quantum Criticality of Two-Dimensional Quantum Magnets with Long-Range Interactions

Sebastian Fey, Sebastian C. Kapfer, Kai Phillip Schmidt

We study the critical breakdown of two-dimensional quantum magnets in the presence of algebraically decaying long-range interactions by investigating the transverse-field Ising model on the square and triangular lattice. This is achieved technically by combining perturbative continuous unitary transformations with classical Monte Carlo simulations to extract high-order series for the one-particle excitations in the high-field quantum paramagnet. We find that the unfrustrated systems change from mean-field to nearest-neighbor universality with continuously varying critical exponents. In the frustrated case on the square lattice the system remains in the universality class of the nearest-neighbor model independent of the long-range nature of the interaction, while we argue that the quantum criticality for the triangular lattice is terminated by a first-order phase transition line.

Quantum phase transitions in the Kondo-necklace model: perturbative continuous unitary transformation approach

Shayan Hemmatiyan, M. Rahimi Movassagh, Nader Ghassemi +3 more

The Kondo-necklace model can describe magnetic low-energy limit of strongly correlated heavy fermion materials. There exist multiple energy scales in this model corresponding to each phase of the system. Here, we study quantum phase transition between the Kondo-singlet phase and the antiferromagnetic long-range ordered phase, and show the effect of anisotropies in terms of quantum information properties and vanishing energy gap. We employ the 'perturbative continuous unitary transformations' approach to calculate the energy gap and spin-spin correlations for the model in the thermodynamic limit of one, two, and three spatial dimensions as well as for spin ladders. In particular, we show that the method, although being perturbative, can predict the expected quantum critical point, where the gap of low-energy spectrum vanishes, which is in good agreement with results of other numerical and Green's function analyses. In addition, we employ concurrence, a bipartite entanglement measure, to study the criticality of the model. Absence of singularities in the derivative of concurrence in two and three dimensions in the Kondo-necklace model shows that this model features multipartite entanglement. We also discuss crossover from the one-dimensional to the two-dimensional model via the ladder structure.

Quantum melting of long-range ordered quantum antiferromagnets investigated by momentum-space continuous similarity transformations

Dag-Björn Hering, Matthias R. Walther, Kai Phillip Schmidt +1 more

We apply continuous similarity transformations (CSTs) to study the zero-temperature breakdown of long-range ordered quantum antiferromagnets. The CST flow equations are truncated in momentum space by the scaling dimension so that all operators with scaling dimension up to two are taken into account. We determine the quantum phase transition out of the N\'eel-ordered phase in the unfrustrated square lattice Heisenberg bilayer as well as the quantum melting of the N\'eel-ordered and columnar phase in the highly frustrated ${J}_{1}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{2}$ model on the square lattice. In all cases the CST is set up to isolate the ground state so that the stability of the flow equations, the ground-state energy, and the sublattice magnetization are used to explore the long-range ordered phases. We extract quantum critical points, which agree well with values in the literature. Further, we estimate the associated critical exponents $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ and $\ensuremath{\beta}$, which turns out to be a challenging task for the CST approach.

Quantum phase transitions in the K -layer Ising toric code

Lukas Schamriß, Lea Lenke, Matthias Mühlhauser +1 more

We investigate the quantum phase diagram of the $K$-layer Ising toric code corresponding to $K$ layers of two-dimensional toric codes coupled by Ising interactions. While for small Ising interactions the system displays ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}^{K}$ topological order originating from the toric codes in each layer, the system shows ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ topological order in the high-Ising limit. The latter is demonstrated for general $K$ by deriving an effective low-energy model in $K\mathrm{th}$-order degenerate perturbation theory, which is given as an effective anisotropic single-layer toric code in terms of collective pseudospins 1/2 referring to the two ground states of isolated Ising chain segments. For the specific cases $K=3$ and $K=4$ we apply high-order series expansions to determine the gap series in the low- and high-Ising limit. Extrapolation of the elementary energy gaps gives convincing evidence that the ground-state phase diagram consists of a single quantum critical point and our findings suggest a quantum phase transition in the 3D Ising* universality class for both $K$ separating both types of topological order, which is consistent with former findings for the bilayer Ising toric code.

Linked-cluster expansions for quantum magnets on the hypercubic lattice

K. Coester, Darshan G. Joshi, Matthias Vojta C +1 more

For arbitrary space dimension $d$, we investigate the quantum phase transitions of two paradigmatic spin models defined on a hypercubic lattice, the coupled-dimer Heisenberg model and the transverse-field Ising model. To this end, high-order linked-cluster expansions for the ground-state energy and the one-particle gap are performed up to order 9 about the decoupled-dimer and high-field limits, respectively. Extrapolations of the high-order series yield the location of the quantum phase transition and the correlation-length exponent $\ensuremath{\nu}$ as a function of space dimension $d$. The results are complemented by $1/d$ expansions to next-to-leading order of observables across the phase diagrams. Remarkably, our analysis of the extrapolated linked-cluster expansion allows to extract the coefficients of the full $1/d$ expansion for the phase-boundary location in both models exactly in leading order and quantitatively for subleading corrections.
