Abstract

We construct an emergent holographic dual description in the Luttinger-Ward functional approach, where the renormalization group (RG) flows of collective bi-local fields appear manifestly in the bulk effective action with an emergent extra dimension. This holographic dual effective field theory reproduces $1/N$ quantum corrections in a self-consistent manner when we take the UV limit in the bulk effective action. Going into the IR regime in the extra dimension, we observe that a partial class of the field theoretic $1/N$, $1/N^{2}$, ... quantum corrections are resummed in the all-loop order and reorganized to form a holographic dual effective field theory in a large $N$ fashion living on the one-higher dimensional spacetime. In this study, we apply this theoretical framework into an Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. Taking the large $N$ limit in the holographic dual effective field theory, we obtain nonlinearly coupled second-order bulk differential equations of motion for the three bi-local order-parameter fields of fermion self-energy, Green's function, and polarization function. Here, both UV and IR boundary conditions are derived self-consistently from the boundary effective action. We solve these highly intertwined nonlinear differential equations based on the so called matching method. Our ansatz for the bi-local order-parameter fields coincide with the conformally invariant solution of the field theoretic large $N$ limit in the UV limit, but their overall coefficients $RG-flow$ along the extra dimensional space, respectively, reflecting effects of higher-order quantum corrections. As a result, we find an insulating behavior, where the self-energy diverges at IR. ...

Investigations on the SYK Model and its Dual Gravity Theory

Kenta Suzuki

The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model is a quantum mechanical many body system with random all-to-all interactions on fermionic N sites (N>>1). This model is shown to saturate the known maximal chaos bound of many body system and then based on this observation it is conjectured to be dual to a quantum black hole in the sense of the AdS/CFT correspondence. In this dissertation, we show that the large N physics of the SYK model is systematically described by a single bi-local field. In particular, we emphasize the appearance of the emergent conformal reparametrization symmetry at the critical IR fixed point and the corresponding divergent contribution of the symmetry modes in the propagator of the bi-local field. We discuss non-linear-level derivation of the zero modes effective action, which is given by the Schwarzian derivative for finite reparametrization symmetry. Besides the symmetry modes, which correspond to the dilaton-gravity sector in the dual AdS theory, the SYK model also predicts an infinite tower of matter fields in AdS_2. We demonstrate that this infinite spectrum can be nicely packaged into a single field in 3-dimensional space-time. Finally, we consider the question of identifying the dual space-time of the SYK model. Focusing on the signature of emergent space-time of the (Euclidean) model, we explain the need for non-local (Radon-type) transformations on external legs of n-point Green's functions. This results in a dual theory with Euclidean AdS signature with additional leg-factors. We speculate that these factors incorporate the coupling of additional bulk states similar to the discrete states of 2D string theory.

Emergent holographic description for the Kondo effect: Comparison with Bethe ansatz

Ki‐Seok Kim, Suk Bum Chung, Chanyong Park B +1 more

Implementing Wilsonian renormalization group transformations in an iterative way, we develop a nonperturbative field theoretical framework for strongly coupled quantum theories, which takes into account all-loop quantum corrections organized in the $1/N$ expansion. Here, $N$ represents the flavor number of strongly correlated quantum fields. The resulting classical field theory is given by an effective Landau-Ginzburg theory for a local order parameter field, which appears in one-dimensional higher spacetime. We confirm the nonperturbative nature of this field theoretical framework for the Kondo effect. Intriguingly, we show that the recursive Wilsonian renormalization group method can explain nonperturbative thermodynamic properties of an impurity, consistent with Bethe ansatz for the whole temperature region.

Wormhole-induced effective coupling in SYK chains

Pablo Basteiro, Giuseppe Di Giulio, Johanna Erdmenger B +2 more

A bstract Inhomogeneous quantum chains have recently been considered in the context of developing novel discrete realizations of holographic dualities. To advance this programme, we explore the ground states of infinite chains with large number N of Majorana fermions on each site, which interact via on-site q -body Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) couplings, as well as via additional inhomogeneous hopping terms between nearest-neighbour sites. The hopping parameters are either aperiodically or randomly distributed. Our approach unifies techniques to solve SYK-like models in the large N limit with a real-space renormalization group method known as strong-disorder renormalization group (SDRG). We show that the SDRG decimation of SYK dots linked by a strong hopping induces an effective hopping interaction between their neighbouring sites. If two decimated sites are nearest neighbours, in the large q limit their local ground states admit a holographic dual description in terms of eternal traversable wormholes. At the end of the SDRG procedure, we obtain a factorised ground state of the infinite inhomogeneous SYK chains that we consider, which has a spacetime description involving a sequence of wormholes. This amounts to a local near-boundary description of the bulk geometry in the context of discrete holography.

Large N Fields and Holography

Animik Ghosh

We study (nearly) AdS/CFT holography within the context of the Sachdev-Ye- Kitaev (SYK) model. We present a systematic procedure to extract the dynamics of the low energy Schwarzian mode in SYK type models with a single energy scale J and emergent reparametrization symmetry in the infrared within the framework of perturbation theory. We develop a systematic approach using Feynman diagrams in bilocal theory to obtain a formal expression for the enhanced and O(1) corrections to the bilocal propagator and apply this general technique to large q SYK. We show that the Schwarzian theory describes a sector of a general class of two dimensional CFTs using conformal bootstrap techniques. We also provide a gravitational interpretation of this fact by showing that the dynamics in the near horizon throat of a specific class of BTZ black holes is described very well by Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity which gives rise to the Schwarzian action. We study the highly nontrivial conformal matter spectrum of the SYK model at arbitrary q. We provide a three dimensional bulk interpretation and carry out Kaluza-Klein (KK) reduction to reproduce the SYK spectrum and more significantly, the conformal bilocal propagator. We provide an interpretation of the two dimensional dual spacetime of the conformal sector of the SYK model using techniques from bilocal holography. We present a resolution of a conundrum about the signature of the dual spacetime using nonlocal integral transformations.

Thickening and sickening the SYK model

Dmitri V. Khveshchenko

We discuss higher dimensional generalizations of the 0 + 1-dimensional Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model that has recently become the focus of intensive interdisciplinary studies by, both, the condensed matter and field-theoretical communities. Unlike the previous constructions where multiple SYK copies would be coupled to each other and/or hybridized with itinerant fermions via spatially short-ranged random hopping processes, we study algebraically varying long-range (spatially and/or temporally) correlated random couplings in the general d+1 dimensions. Such pertinent topics as translationally-invariant strong-coupling solutions, emergent reparametrization symmetry, effective action for fluctuations, chaotic behavior, and diffusive transport (or a lack thereof) are all addressed. We find that the most appealing properties of the original SYK model that suggest the existence of its 1+1-dimensional holographic gravity dual do not survive the aforementioned generalizations, thus lending no additional support to the hypothetical broad (including’non-AdSd+2/non-CFTd+1’) holographic correspondence.
