Abstract

Logarithmic negativity is a widely used entanglement measure in quantum information theories, which can also be efficiently computed in quantum many-body systems by replica trick or by relating to correlation matrices. In this paper, we demonstrate that in free-fermion systems with conserved charge, Rényi and logarithmic negativity can be expanded by connected charge correlators, analogous to the case for entanglement entropy in the context of full counting statistics (FCS). We confirm the rapid convergence of this expansion in random all-connected Hamiltonian through numerical verification, especially for systems with only local hopping. We find that the replica trick that get logarithmic negativity from the limit of Rényi negativity is valid in this method only for translational invariant systems. Using this expansion, we analyze the scaling behavior of negativity in extensive free-fermion systems. In particular, in 1+1 dimensional free-fermion systems, we observe that the scaling behavior of negativity from our expansion is consistent with known results from the method with Toeplitz matrix. These findings provide insights into the entanglement properties of free-fermion systems, and demonstrate the efficacy of the expansion approach in studying entanglement measures.

Dynamics of charge-imbalance-resolved entanglement negativity after a quench in a free-fermion model

Gilles Parez, Riccarda Bonsignori, Pasquale Calabrese

Abstract The presence of a global internal symmetry in a quantum many-body system is reflected in the fact that the entanglement between its subparts is endowed with an internal structure, namely it can be decomposed as a sum of contributions associated to each symmetry sector. The symmetry resolution of entanglement measures provides a formidable tool to probe the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of quantum systems. Here, we study the time evolution of charge-imbalance-resolved negativity after a global quench in the context of free-fermion systems, complementing former works for the symmetry-resolved entanglement entropy. We find that the charge-imbalance-resolved logarithmic negativity shows an effective equipartition in the scaling limit of large times and system size, with a perfect equipartition for early and infinite times. We also derive and conjecture a formula for the dynamics of the charged Rényi logarithmic negativities. We argue that our results can be understood in the framework of the quasiparticle picture for the entanglement dynamics, and provide a conjecture that we expect to be valid for generic integrable models.

Symmetry Resolution of Entanglement Measures in Free Fermionic Systems and Conformal Field Theories

Riccarda Bonsignori

Entanglement and symmetries are two pillars of our understanding of modern Physics, but surprisingly the study of the interplay between these two fundamental concepts has become the subject of an intense research area only in the last few years. In particular, the resolution of entanglement in the various symmetry sectors of a quantum many-body system with a global conserved charge gained a lot of interest within the entanglement community. As shown in some experimental papers, the study of this symmetry resolved entanglement is necessary for a better understanding of the non-equilibrium dynamics of quantum many-body systems. This Thesis is devoted to the study of the symmetry resolution of the entanglement measures in free fermionic systems and Conformal Field Theories. It is organised as follows. In Chap. 1 we give an overview of the main definitions and concepts related to the entanglement and its measures in quantum mechanics and quantum field theory. Then, we specialize to the case of conformal field theories, to derive expressions of the entanglement entropy and negativity in all the cases that will be examined in the second part of the Thesis. We finally illustrate the main free-fermionic techniques that will be used to perform the analytical as well as numerical lattice calculations. In Chap. 2, we consider a $1$-dimensional system of free fermions hopping on a lattice, in which the conserved $U(1)$ charge is the total particle number. We evaluate the symmetry resolved R'enyi and entanglement entropies determining exactly all the non-universal constants and logarithmic corrections to the scaling, thanks to the so-called Fisher-Hartwig conjecture. In Chap. 3, we study the symmetry resolved entanglement entropies in $1$-dimensional systems in presence of boundaries, considering the cases of an interval starting from the boundary and disconnected from it. We evaluate the charged and symmetry resolved entropies for conformal invariant theories and a semi-infinite chain of free fermions, finding entanglement equipartition. Using a generalization of the lattice calculations performed in Chap. 2, we also evaluate the first term breaking equipartition for the free fermionic chain. In Chap. 4, we study the symmetry resolution of the entanglement negativity in free fermionic systems, which admits a decomposition in terms of the charge imbalance between the two subsystems. We use conformal field theory to derive the universal behavior of the charge imbalance resolved negativity for a free Dirac field at finite temperature and size. For the lattice version of the Dirac filed, we also determine exactly the model-dependent terms using the Fisher-Hartwig conjecture. We find that at leading order the charge imbalance resolved negativity verifies equipartition. For the lattice model, we also evaluate the first corrections to this equipartition. In Chap. 5, we study the time evolution of the symmetry resolved entanglement entropy and a suitably defined symmetry resolved mutual information in a system of free fermions after a quench. In the context of free fermions and conformal field theories, we are able to provide analytical results for the time-dependent charged and resolved entropies, and shed light on two new physical phenomena. First, the symmetry resolved R'enyi entropies start evolving with a calculable time delay that depends on the charge sector. Second, there is an effective equipartition of the entanglement in the limit of large subsystem size. For free fermions, we also find that effective equipartition is verified by the mutual information. We expect that these phenomena occur in more general quantum systems, as they can be understood from the quasiparticle picture for the spreading of entanglement. In the Appendix, we give an overview of conformal field theory, reporting the main concepts and formulas that are needed for a more complete understanding of the previous Chapters.

Free fermions on a line: Asymptotics of the entanglement entropy and entanglement spectrum from full counting statistics

Roman Süsstrunk, Dmitri A. Ivanov

We consider the entanglement entropy for a line segment in the system of noninteracting one-dimensional fermions at zero temperature. In the limit of a large segment length L , the leading asymptotic behavior of this entropy is known to be logarithmic in L . We study finite-size corrections to this asymptotic behavior. Based on an earlier conjecture of the asymptotic expansion for full counting statistics in the same system, we derive a full asymptotic expansion for the von Neumann entropy and obtain first several corrections for the Rényi entropies. Our corrections for the Rényi entropies reproduce earlier results. We also discuss the entanglement spectrum in this problem in terms of single-particle occupation numbers.

Entanglement Rényi entropies from ballistic fluctuation theory: The free fermionic case

Giuseppe Del Vecchio Del Vecchio, Benjamin Doyon, Paola Ruggiero

The large-scale behaviour of entanglement entropy in finite-density states, in and out of equilibrium, can be understood using the physical picture of particle pairs. However, the full theoretical origin of this picture is not fully established yet. In this work, we clarify this picture by investigating entanglement entropy using its connection with the large-deviation theory for thermodynamic and hydrodynamic fluctuations. We apply the universal framework of Ballistic Fluctuation Theory (BFT), based the Euler hydrodynamics of the model, to correlation functions of branch-point twist fields, the starting point for computing Rényi entanglement entropies within the replica approach. Focusing on free fermionic systems in order to illustrate the ideas, we show that both the equilibrium behavior and the dynamics of Rényi entanglement entropies can be fully derived from the BFT. In particular, we emphasise that long-range correlations develop after quantum quenches, and accounting for these explain the structure of the entanglement growth. We further show that this growth is related to fluctuations of charge transport, generalising to quantum quenches the relation between charge fluctuations and entanglement observed earlier. The general ideas we introduce suggest that the large-scale behaviour of entanglement has its origin within hydrodynamic fluctuations.

A scaling function for the particle entanglement entropy of fermions

Harini Radhakrishnan, Matthias Thamm, Hatem Barghathi +2 more

Abstract Entanglement entropy under a particle bipartition generates complementary information to mode entanglement because it is sensitive to interactions and particle statistics at leading order and does not depend on any externally imposed length scale. In this paper, we investigate the particle entanglement entropy in a system of N interacting spinless lattice fermions in one spatial dimension by combining bosonization techniques with exact and approximate numerical methods. We introduce a general scaling form for the fermionic particle entanglement entropy captured by a shape function that enters as an extensive interaction-induced correction to a known free fermion result. A general asymptotic expansion in the total number of particles demonstrates that its form is robust for different values of the Rényi index and highlights how quantum correlations are encoded in the n-particle density matrix of a pure many-body quantum state.

Symmetry-Resolved Entanglement Entropy in Critical Free-Fermion Chains

Nick G. Jones

Abstract The symmetry-resolved Rényi entanglement entropy is the Rényi entanglement entropy of each symmetry sector of a density matrix $$\rho $$ ρ . This experimentally relevant quantity is known to have rich theoretical connections to conformal field theory (CFT). For a family of critical free-fermion chains, we present a rigorous lattice-based derivation of its scaling properties using the theory of Toeplitz determinants. We consider a class of critical quantum chains with a microscopic U(1) symmetry; each chain has a low energy description given byNmassless Dirac fermions. For the density matrix, $$\rho _A$$ ρA , of subsystems ofLneighbouring sites we calculate the leading terms in the largeLasymptotic expansion of the symmetry-resolved Rényi entanglement entropies. This follows from a largeLexpansion of the charged moments of $$\rho _A$$ ρA ; we derive $$\mathrm {tr}(\mathrm {e}^{\mathrm {i}\alpha Q_A} \rho _A^n)~=~a \mathrm {e}^{\mathrm {i}\alpha \langle Q_A\rangle } (\sigma L)^{-x}(1+O(L^{-\mu }))$$ tr(eiαQAρAn)=aeiα⟨QA⟩(σL)-x(1+O(L-μ)) , wherea, xand $$\mu $$ μ are universal and $$\sigma $$ σ depends only on theNFermi momenta. We show that the exponentxcorresponds to the expectation from CFT analysis. The error term $$O(L^{-\mu })$$ O(L-μ) is consistent with but weaker than the field theory prediction $$O(L^{-2\mu })$$ O(L-2μ) . However, using further results and conjectures for the relevant Toeplitz determinant, we find excellent agreement with the expansion over CFT operators.
