Nonlocal fermions with local interactions and the SYK model

Abstract

Abstract One of the most promising routes to non-fermi liquids and strange metals has been through SYK models (Sachdev 2010 Phys. Rev. Lett. 105 151602) which necessarily involve large flavor degrees of freedom and interactions with imposed disorder. We introduce an interacting model of nonlocal spinless fermions in which large flavor and effective disorder emerge spontaneously in the extreme nonlocal limit. This model may be thought of as an expansion in a dimensionless ‘locality scale,’ α, with the limit α → 0 recovering a conventional local action. For finite α, the resulting interacting nonlocal action exhibits a large number of low-energy degrees of freedom—proportional to α—and the structure factor mediating the local interactions between these fermions is effectively random for large α. In one dimension, with finite α, we show that interactions are marginal to the one loop level (as they are in the conventional local case), preserving a gapless phase. At large α the interaction strength becomes comparable to the bandwidth and we analyze this large flavor limit in a manner similar to the diagrammatic approach to SYK. As α is increased we argue that the gapless phase established by conventional RG possibly crosses over to a gapless SYK phase, although the ‘melon’ diagrams are not exclusively dominant. We speculate on how this model might arise physically from an S-matrix connecting pure excited states—rather than the vacuum—to access finite temperature interacting fermions.

Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev Models and Beyond: A Window into Non-Fermi Liquids

Debanjan Chowdhury, Antoine Georges, Olivier Parcollet +1 more

We present a review of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model of compressible quantum many-body systems without quasiparticle excitations, and its connections to various theoretical studies of non-Fermi liquids in condensed matter physics. The review is placed in the context of numerous experimental observations on correlated electron materials. Strong correlations in metals are often associated with their proximity to a Mott transition to an insulator created by the local Coulomb repulsion between the electrons. We explore the phase diagrams of a number of models of such local electronic correlation, employing a dynamical mean field theory in the presence of random spin exchange interactions. Numerical analyses and analytical solutions, using renormalization group methods and expansions in large spin degeneracy, lead to critical regions which display SYK physics. The models studied include the single-band Hubbard model, the $t$-$J$ model and the two-band Kondo-Heisenberg model in the presence of random spin exchange interactions. We also examine non-Fermi liquids obtained by considering each SYK model with random four-fermion interactions to be a multi-orbital atom, with the SYK-atoms arranged in an infinite lattice. We connect to theories of sharp Fermi surfaces without any low-energy quasiparticles in the absence of spatial disorder, obtained by coupling a Fermi liquid to a gapless boson; a systematic large $N$ theory of such a critical Fermi surface, with SYK characteristics, is obtained by averaging over an ensemble of theories with random boson-fermion couplings. Finally, we present an overview of the links between the SYK model and quantum gravity and end with an outlook on open questions.

The local SYK model and its triple-scaling limit

Takanori Anegawa, Norihiro Iizuka, Sunil Kumar Sake

A bstract We study a model of fermions with random couplings similar to conventional SYK with N number of flavours of fermions, at large N . Unlike the conventional SYK model, which has all-to-all couplings, the model we study, which we call local SYK, has a much less number of random couplings, just N in number and with only local interactions. It is shown that there exists a limit in which the local SYK model can be solved using the chord diagram techniques, analogous to the double-scaled limit of conventional SYK. This limit corresponds to taking the size of the fermion coupling terms, q , to scale linearly with N . A further triple-scaling limit is taken to analyze the low energy limit and it is shown that the OTOCs saturate the chaos bound, paralleling the analysis in the conventional SYK.

Superconducting critical temperature in the extended SYK model

F. Salvati, A. Tagliacozzo

Models for strongly interacting fermions in disordered clusters forming an array, with electron hopping between sites, reproduce the linear dependence on temperature of the resistivity, typical of the strange metal phase of High Temperature Superconducting materials (Extended Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) models). Our hydrodynamical approach to the marginal Fermi liquid emerging out of the interaction, identifies the low energy collective excitations of the system in its coherent phase. These neutral excitations diffuse in the lattice, but the diffusion is heavily hindered by coupling to the pseudo Goldstone modes of the conformal broken symmetry SYK phase, which are local in space. A critical temperature for superconductivity arises in the electron liquid,in case these excitations are assumed to mediate an attractive Cooper-pairing, in the electron liquid, which is not BCS-like.

Combinatorial aspects of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model

Matteo Laudonio, Romain Pascalie, Adrian Tanasă

The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model is a model of $q$ interacting fermions whose large N limit is dominated by melonic graphs. In this review we first present a diagrammatic proof of that result by direct, combinatorial analysis of its Feynman graphs. Gross and Rosenhaus have then proposed a generalization of the SYK model which involves fermions with different flavors. In terms of Feynman graphs, these flavors can be seen as reminiscent of the colors used in random tensor theory. Applying modern tools from random tensors to such a colored SYK model, all leading and next-to-leading orders diagrams of the 2-point and 4-point functions in the large $N$ expansion can be identified. We then study the effect of non-Gaussian average over the random couplings in a complex, colored version of the SYK model. Using a Polchinski-like equation and random tensor Gaussian universality, we show that the effect of this non-Gaussian averaging leads to a modification of the variance of the Gaussian distribution of couplings at leading order in $N$. We then derive the form of the effective action to all orders.

SYK and SYK-like models

Yuki Hamano

The SYK model of Sachdev, Ye and Kitaev is a recent model of N Majorana fermions coupled via quartic random interaction. It has the extraordinary properties of being exactly solvable at large N , having emergent conformal symmetry in the IR, and exhibiting maximal quantum chaos. The confluence of these properties make SYK a highly attractive candidate for a solvable AdS/CFT correspondence. What’s more, it was found to capture elements of non-Fermi-liquid behavior in strange metals. This thesis introduces the SYK model and discusses a recent variant, the SYK∗ model of Marcus and Vandoren. In the latter, the effective action is derived and branches of conformal solutions are discussed. The parameter space of SYK∗ is investigated for large and small M . The former reveals a phase separation and a N critical point in the T−M plane is claimed to exist.

Revealing Nonperturbative Effects in the SYK Model

I. Ya. Aref’eva, I. V. Volovich, M. A. Khramtsov

In the large-N limit, we study saddle points of two SYK chains coupled by an interaction that is nonlocal in Euclidean time. We study the free model with the order of the fermionic interaction q = 2 analytically and also investigate the model with interaction in the case q = 4 numerically. We show that in both cases, there is a nontrivial phase structure with an infinite number of phases. Each phase corresponds to a saddle point in the noninteracting two-replica SYK. The nontrivial saddle points have a nonzero value of the replica-nondiagonal correlator in the sense of quasiaveraging if the coupling between replicas is turned off. The nonlocal interaction between replicas thus provides a protocol for turning the nonperturbatively subleading effects in SYK into nonequilibrium configurations that dominate at large N. For comparison, we also study two SYK chains with local interaction for q = 2 and q = 4 . We show that the q= 2 model has a similar phase structure, while the phase structure differs in the q = 4 model, dual to the traversable wormhole.
