Abstract

The Gross-Pitaevskii equation is solved by analytic methods for an external double-well potential that is an infinite square well plus a $δ$-function central barrier. We find solutions that have the symmetry of the non-interacting Hamiltonian as well as asymmetric solutions that bifurcate from the symmetric solutions for attractive interactions and from the antisymmetric solutions for repulsive interactions. We present a variational approximation to the asymmetric state as well as an approximate numerical approach. Stability of the states is briefly considered.

Abstract The Gross-Pitaevskii equation is solved by analytic methods for anexternal double-well potential that is an infinite square well plusa δ-function central barrier. We find solutions that havethe symmetry of the non-interacting Hamiltonian as well as asymmetricsolutions that bifurcate from the symmetric solutions for attractive interactions and from the antisymmetric solutions for repulsive interactions. We presenta variational approximation to the asymmetric state as well as anapproximate numerical approach. Stability of the states is briefly considered.

The symmetry breaking states and bifurcation of Bose–Einstein condensates in a double well

XinYan Jia, Weidong Li, Hiroshi Ezawa

An analytical approximation method to clarify the symmetry-breaking stationary solutions to the Gross–Pitaevskii equation with symmetric double-well external potential is presented. By this method, we can understand that each symmetry-breaking solution bifurcates from a symmetry-preserving solution as one varies the coupling constant of the nonlinear interaction, and predict the bifurcation point. Also, the method gives a good approximation to the energy eigenvalues of the lower states, symmetry-breaking as well as symmetry-preserving, as long as the nonlinear interaction is not too strong.

Exact solvability of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for bound states subjected to general potentials

Mirón, M., Emerson Sadurní

In this paper we present the analytic solution to the problem of bound states of the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation in 1D and its properties, in the presence of external potentials in the form of finite square wells or attractive Dirac deltas, as well as stable solitons for repulsive defects. We show that the GP equation can be mapped to a first-order non-autonomous dynamical system, whose solutions can sometimes be written in terms of known functions. The formal solutions of this non-conservative system can be written with the help of Glauber-Trotter formulas or a series of ordered exponentials in the coordinate $x$. With this we illustrate how to solve any nonlinear problem based on a construction due to Mello and Kumar for the linear case (layered potentials). For the benefit of the reader, we comment on the difference between the integrability of a quantum system and the solvability of the wave equation.

Accuracy of the Gross–Pitaevskii Equation in a Double-Well Potential

Asaad R. Sakhel, Robert J. Ragan, William J. Mullin

Abstract The Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) in a double well potential produces solutions that break the symmetry of the underlying non-interacting Hamiltonian, i.e., asymmetric solutions. The GPE is derived from the more general second-quantized Fock Schrödinger equation (FSE). We investigate whether such solutions appear in the more general case or are artifacts of the GPE. We use two-mode analyses for a variational treatment of the GPE and to treat the Fock equation. An exact diagonalization of the FSE in dual-condensates yields degenerate ground states that are very accurately fitted by phase-state representations of the degenerate asymmetric states found in the GPE. The superposition of degenerate asymmetrical states forms a cat state. An alternative form of cat state results from a change of the two-mode basis set.

Stationary solutions of Gross-Pitaevskii equations in a double square well

Weidong Li

We present analytical stationary solutions for the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BECs) trapped in a double-well potential. These solutions are compared to those described by [Mahmud et al., Phys. Rev. A 66, 063607 (2002)]. In particular, we provide further evidence that symmetry preserving stationary solutions can be reduced to the eigenstates of the corresponding linear Schr\"odinger equation. Moreover, we have found that the symmetry-breaking solutions can emerge not only from bifurcations, but also from isolated points in the chemical potential--nonlinear interaction diagram. We also have found that there are some moving nodes in the symmetry-breaking solutions.

Spontaneous symmetry breaking of Bose-Fermi mixtures in double-well potentials

Sadhan K. Adhikari, Boris A. Malomed, Luca Salasnich +1 more

We study the spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) of a superfluid Bose-Fermi (BF) mixture in a double-well potential (DWP). The mixture is described by the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) for the bosons, coupled to an equation for the order parameter of the Fermi superfluid, which is derived from the respective density functional in the unitarity limit (a similar model applies to the BCS regime, too). Straightforward SSB in the degenerate Fermi gas loaded into a DWP is impossible, as it requires an attractive self-interaction, and the intrinsic nonlinearity in the Fermi gas is repulsive. Nonetheless, we demonstrate that the symmetry breaking is possible in the mixture with attraction between fermions and bosons, like $^{40}\mathrm{K}$ and $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$. Numerical results are represented by dependencies of asymmetry parameters for both components on particle numbers of the mixture, ${N}_{\mathrm{F}}$ and ${N}_{\mathrm{B}}$, and by phase diagrams in the $({N}_{\mathrm{F}},{N}_{\mathrm{B}})$ plane, which displays regions of symmetric and asymmetric ground states. The dynamical picture of the SSB, induced by a gradual transformation of the single-well potential into the DWP, is reported too. An analytical approximation is proposed for the case when the GPE for the boson wave function may be treated by means of the Thomas-Fermi (TF) approximation. Under a special linear relationship between ${N}_{\mathrm{F}}$ and ${N}_{\mathrm{B}}$, the TF approximation allows us to reduce the model to a single equation for the fermionic function, which includes competing repulsive and attractive nonlinear terms. The latter one directly displays the mechanism of the generation of the effective attraction in the Fermi superfluid, mediated by the bosonic component of the mixture.
