Quantum Support Vector Machine for Classification Task: A Review

Muhamad Akrom

Quantum computing has emerged as a promising technology capable of solving complex computational problems more efficiently than classical computers. Among the various quantum algorithms developed, the Quantum Support Vector Machine (QSVM) has gained significant attention for its potential to enhance machine learning tasks, particularly classification. This review paper explores the theoretical foundations, methodologies, and potential advantages of QSVM for classification tasks. We discuss the quantum computing principles underpinning QSVM, compare them with classical support vector machines, and review recent advancements and applications. Finally, we highlight the challenges and prospects of QSVM in the context of quantum machine learning.

A review of quantum support vector machine for data classification

Tran, Tien

Quantum Machine Learning is an active research field where the power of quantum mechanics is integrated into machine learning algorithms to solve problems that are intractable for classical computers. Quantum support vector machine (QSVM) was one of the first quantum algorithms that got implemented on real quantum hardware. It demonstrated promising outcomes as compared to classical Support vector machine (SVM) through many implementations. However, it encounters challenges in scaling with large datasets and in resource effectiveness when compare to the usage of innovative classical algorithms in the Noisy Intermediate Scale Quantum era. Here is a review of some latest developments of QSVM and discussion on prospects of QSVM application in the future.

Quantum support vector machines (QSVMs) are a novel approach for solving classification problems, combining the principles of quantum computing with the support vector machine algorithm. In this study, we applied a QSVM to the Breast Cancer Wisconsin (Original) data set to classify tumors as benign or malignant. Our results showed that the QSVM outperformed classical support vector machines in terms of classification accuracy, achieving a success rate of 100% while classical SVM shows almost perfect result with its accuracy 95%. Additionally, the QSVM required significantly less training time compared to the classical SVM. These results demonstrate the potential of QSVMs for solving complex classification problems in the field of medical diagnosis.
