Abstract

A bstract We investigate the evolution of entanglement within an open, strongly coupled system interacting with a heat bath as its environment, in the frameworks of both the doubly holographic model and the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. Generally, the entanglement within the system initially increases as due to internal interactions; however, it eventually dissipates into the environment. In the doubly holographic setup, we consider an end-of-the-world brane in the bulk to represent an eternal black hole coupled with its radiation and the evolution of the global thermofield double (TFD) state. For small black holes, the reflected entropy between the bipartition exhibits a ramp-plateau-slump behavior, where the plateau arises due to the phase transition of the entanglement wedge cross-section before the Page time. Similarly, the mutual information between the bipartition displays a ramp-slop-stabilizing behavior. In quantum mechanics, we consider a double copy of the SYK-plus-bath system in a global TFD state, resembling an eternal black hole interacting with an environment. The Rényi mutual information within the double-copied SYK clusters exhibits a ramp-plateau-slope-stabilizing behavior. The dynamic behaviors of the entanglement quantities observed in these two models are attributable to the competition between the internal interaction of the system and the external interaction with the baths. Our study provides a fine-grained picture of the entanglement dynamics inside black holes before their Page time.

Replica wormhole and information retrieval in the SYK model coupled to Majorana chains

Yiming Chen, Xiao-Liang Qi, Pengfei Zhang

A bstract Motivated by recent studies of the information paradox in (1+1)-D anti-de Sitter spacetime with a bath described by a (1+1)-D conformal field theory, we study the dynamics of second Ŕenyi entropy of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model ( χ ) coupled to a Majorana chain bath ( ψ ). The system is prepared in the thermofield double (TFD) state and then evolved by H L + H R . For small system-bath coupling, we find that the second Rényi entropy $$ {S}_{\upchi L,\upchi R}^{(2)} $$ S χ L , χ R 2 of the SYK model undergoes a first order transition during the evolution. In the sense of holographic duality, the long-time solution corresponds to a “replica wormhole”. The transition time corresponds to the Page time of a black hole coupled to a thermal bath. We further study the information scrambling and retrieval by introducing a classical control bit, which controls whether or not we add a perturbation in the SYK system. The mutual information between the bath and the control bit shows a positive jump at the Page time, indicating that the entanglement wedge of the bath includes an island in the holographic bulk.

Black holes entangled by radiation

Yuxuan Liu, Zhuo-Yu Xian, Cheng Peng +1 more

Abstract We construct three models to describe the scenario where two eternal black holes are separated by a flat space, and can eventually be entangled by exchanging radiation. In the doubly holographic setup, we compute the entanglement entropy and mutual information among subsystems and obtain the dynamic phase structure of the entanglement. The formation of entanglement between these two black holes is delayed by the space which the radiation must travel through. If the black holes exchange sufficient Hawking modes, the final state is characterized by a connected entanglement wedge; otherwise, the final entanglement wedge contains two separate islands. In the former case, the entanglement wedge of the black holes forms at the time scale proportional to the size of the flat space between them. While in both cases, the unitarity of the evolution is preserved. When the sizes of the black holes are not equal, we observe a loss of entanglement between the smaller black hole and the radiation at late times. On the field theory side, we consider two Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) clusters coupled to a Majorana chain, which resemble two black holes connected by a radiation region. We numerically compute the same entanglement measures and obtain similar phase structures as the bulk results. In general, a time delay of the entanglement between the SYK clusters is found in cases with a long Majorana chain. In particular, when the SYK clusters are different in size, similar entanglement loss between the smaller SYK cluster and the Majorana chain is observed. Finally, we investigate a chain model composed of EPR clusters with particles exchanging between neighboring clusters and reproduce the features of entanglement observed in the previous models.

Tracking Entanglement Transfer: Emergence of Thermodynamics from Quantum Information

Debraj Debata, Abhirup Mukherjee, Siddhartha Lal

We study entanglement transfer in a minimal model of two qubits that are coupled with one another through an antiferromagnetic Heisenberg exchange ($\tilde{J}$), and where one of them is additionally coupled to a fermionic environment through another antiferromagnetic Heisenberg exchange ($J_{K}$). By tuning the coupling ratio $J_{K}/\tilde{J}$, the system undergoes a quantum phase transition at $T=0$, accompanied by a redistribution of entanglement from the $d'-d$ qubit-subsystem to the environment. Remarkably, the resulting physics exhibits properties that bear analogy with a quantum-information theoretic perspective of the physics of black hole thermodynamics. Carefully selected bipartite and tripartite mutual information measures displays behaviour analogous to the dynamical evolution of black hole entropy, Hawking entropy, and the Page curve expected during the process of evaporation. An effective temperature scale is obtained from the variation of the ground state energy with respect to changes in the bipartite mutual information between the subsystem and the bath. A steady growth of this temperature with the coupling ratio resembles that of the Hawking temperature with the inverse mass of the black hole. Concomitantly, the emergence of non-Fermi liquid behaviour observed near the quantum critical point and in the strong-coupling phase resembles strange-metal-like physics expected near the event horizon from a holographic duality perspective. Our results establish the minimal model as a platform for studying entanglement transfer and information scrambling within a fully unitary quantum framework, and offer new insights into a resolution of the black hole information paradox.

Holographic measurement and quantum teleportation in the SYK thermofield double

Stefano Antonini, Brianna Grado-White, Shao-Kai Jian +1 more

Abstract According to holography, entanglement is the building block of spacetime; therefore, drastic changes of entanglement will lead to interesting transitions in the dual spacetime. In this paper, we study the effect of projective measurements on the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model’s thermofield double state, dual to an eternal black hole in Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity. We calculate the (Renyi-2) mutual information between the two copies of the SYK model upon projective measurement of a subset of fermions in one copy. We propose a dual JT gravity model that can account for the change of entanglement due to measurement, and observe an entanglement wedge phase transition in the von Neumann entropy. The entanglement wedge for the unmeasured side changes from the region outside the horizon to include the entire time reversal invariant slice of the two-sided geometry as the number of measured Majorana fermions increases. Therefore, after the transition, the bulk information stored in the measured subsystem is not entirely lost upon projection in one copy of the SYK model, but rather teleported to the other copy. We further propose a decoding protocol to elucidate the teleportation interpretation, and connect our analysis to the physics of traversable wormholes.

Information radiation in BCFT models of black holes

Moshe Rozali A, James Sully, Mark Van Raamsdonk B +2 more

Abstract In this note, following [1–3], we introduce and study various holographic systems which can describe evaporating black holes. The systems we consider are boundary conformal field theories for which the number of local degrees of freedom on the boundary (cbdy) is large compared to the number of local degrees of freedom in the bulk CFT (cbulk). We consider states where the boundary degrees of freedom on their own would describe an equilibrium black hole, but the coupling to the bulk CFT degrees of freedom allows this black hole to evaporate. The Page time for the black hole is controlled by the ratio cbdy/cbulk. Using both holographic calculations and direct CFT calculations, we study the evolution of the entanglement entropy for the subset of the radiation system (i.e. the bulk CFT) at a distance d > a from the boundary. We find that the entanglement entropy for this subsystem increases until time a + tPage and then undergoes a phase transition after which the entanglement wedge of the radiation system includes the black hole interior. Remarkably, this occurs even if the radiation system is initially at the same temperature as the black hole so that the two are in thermal equilibrium. In this case, even though the black hole does not lose energy, it “radiates” information through interaction with the radiation system until the radiation system contains enough information to reconstruct the black hole interior.
