Time-reparametrization invariance: from Glasses to toy Black Holes

Abstract

Glassy dynamics have time-reparametrization `softness': glasses fluctuate, and respond to external perturbations, primarily by changing the pace of their evolution. Remarkably, the same situation also appears in toy models of quantum field theory such as the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model, where the excitations associated to reparametrizations play the role of an emerging `gravity'. I describe here how these two seemingly unrelated systems share common features, arising from a technically very similar origin. This connection is particularly close between glassy dynamics and supersymmetric variants of the SYK model, which I discuss in some detail. Apart from the curiosity that this correspondence naturally arouses, there is also the hope that developments in each field may be useful for the other.

Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev models and beyond: Window into non-Fermi liquids

Debanjan Chowdhury, Antoine Georges, Olivier Parcollet +1 more

The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model is a solvable model of a many-body quantum system that has stimulated interest in both condensed matter physics and quantum gravity. This review focuses on the insights provided by the SYK model, which has no quasiparticle excitations, into the physics of Planckian non-Fermi-liquid metals. This is discussed for a range of strongly correlated models and in relation to experiments on strongly correlated materials. Also included is a discussion of recent developments regarding the connections between the SYK model and the quantum theory of black holes.

Investigations on the SYK Model and its Dual Gravity Theory

Kenta Suzuki

The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model is a quantum mechanical many body system with random all-to-all interactions on fermionic N sites (N>>1). This model is shown to saturate the known maximal chaos bound of many body system and then based on this observation it is conjectured to be dual to a quantum black hole in the sense of the AdS/CFT correspondence. In this dissertation, we show that the large N physics of the SYK model is systematically described by a single bi-local field. In particular, we emphasize the appearance of the emergent conformal reparametrization symmetry at the critical IR fixed point and the corresponding divergent contribution of the symmetry modes in the propagator of the bi-local field. We discuss non-linear-level derivation of the zero modes effective action, which is given by the Schwarzian derivative for finite reparametrization symmetry. Besides the symmetry modes, which correspond to the dilaton-gravity sector in the dual AdS theory, the SYK model also predicts an infinite tower of matter fields in AdS_2. We demonstrate that this infinite spectrum can be nicely packaged into a single field in 3-dimensional space-time. Finally, we consider the question of identifying the dual space-time of the SYK model. Focusing on the signature of emergent space-time of the (Euclidean) model, we explain the need for non-local (Radon-type) transformations on external legs of n-point Green's functions. This results in a dual theory with Euclidean AdS signature with additional leg-factors. We speculate that these factors incorporate the coupling of additional bulk states similar to the discrete states of 2D string theory.

Thickening and sickening the SYK model

Dmitri V. Khveshchenko

We discuss higher dimensional generalizations of the 0 + 1-dimensional Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model that has recently become the focus of intensive interdisciplinary studies by, both, the condensed matter and field-theoretical communities. Unlike the previous constructions where multiple SYK copies would be coupled to each other and/or hybridized with itinerant fermions via spatially short-ranged random hopping processes, we study algebraically varying long-range (spatially and/or temporally) correlated random couplings in the general d+1 dimensions. Such pertinent topics as translationally-invariant strong-coupling solutions, emergent reparametrization symmetry, effective action for fluctuations, chaotic behavior, and diffusive transport (or a lack thereof) are all addressed. We find that the most appealing properties of the original SYK model that suggest the existence of its 1+1-dimensional holographic gravity dual do not survive the aforementioned generalizations, thus lending no additional support to the hypothetical broad (including’non-AdSd+2/non-CFTd+1’) holographic correspondence.

Classical glasses, black holes, and strange quantum liquids

Davide Facoetti, Giulio Biroli, Jorge Kurchan B +1 more

From the dynamics of a broad class of classical mean-field glass models, one may obtain a quantum model with finite zero-temperature entropy, a quantum transition at zero temperature, and a time-reparametrization (quasi)invariance in the dynamical equations for correlations. The low-eigenvalue spectrum of the resulting quantum model is directly related to the structure and exploration of metastable states in the landscape of the original classical glass model. This mapping reveals deep connections between classical glasses and the properties of SYK-like models.

Two-dimensional gravity and the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model

Omar Chammaa

We briefly introduce and review the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. This model exhibits quenched disorder, and many quantities, like the Euclidean path integral, are computed as an average over disorder or an average over many different unitary theories corresponding to different realizations of the disorder couplings. This places the interpretation of the Euclidean path integral as a thermal partition function under scrutiny, which we promptly investigate. We reach he seeming conclusion that the Euclidean path integral indeed does not support a Hilbert space interpretation, which is corroborated by other investigations in the literature. We then move one dimension higher, to two-dimensional Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity, investigating its salient features and most importantly, the problem of Hilbert space factorization. This puzzle implies that, due to constraints coming from gauge symmetry, a bulk gravitational theory cannot be dual to a theory with a tensor-product structure on disconnected boundary components. We then briefly introduce and review spin glasses, and review the investigations into the presence of a spin glass phase in the SYK model. Finally, we discuss some natural outgrowths of ideas presented in this thesis
