Abstract

In this paper, we explore the characteristics of reduced density matrix spectra in quantum field theories. Previous studies mainly focus on the function P(λ)≔∑iδ(λ−λi) , where λi denote the eigenvalues of the reduced density matrix. We introduce a series of functions designed to capture the parameter dependencies of these spectra. These functions encompass information regarding the derivatives of eigenvalues concerning the parameters, notably including the function PαJ(λ)≔∑i∂λi∂αJδ(λ−λi) , where αJ denotes the specific parameter. Computation of these functions is achievable through the utilization of Rényi entropy. Intriguingly, we uncover compelling relationships among these functions and demonstrate their utility in constructing the eigenvalues of reduced density matrices for select cases. We perform computations of these functions across several illustrative examples. Especially, we conducted a detailed study of the variations of P(λ) and PαJ(λ) under general perturbation, elucidating their physical implications. In the context of holographic theory, we ascertain that the zero point of the function PαJ(λ) possesses universality, determined as λ0=e−S , where S denotes the entanglement entropy of the reduced density matrix. Furthermore, we exhibit potential applications of these functions in analyzing the properties of entanglement entropy. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Entanglement spectrum of geometric states

Wu-zhong Guo

Abstract The reduced density matrix of a given subsystem, denoted by ρA, contains the information on subregion duality in a holographic theory. We may extract the information by using the spectrum (eigenvalue) of the matrix, called entanglement spectrum in this paper. We evaluate the density of eigenstates, one-point and two-point correlation functions in the microcanonical ensemble state ρA,m associated with an eigenvalue λ for some examples, including a single interval and two intervals in vacuum state of 2D CFTs. We find there exists a microcanonical ensemble state with λ0 which can be seen as an approximate state of ρA. The parameter λ0 is obtained in the two examples. For a general geometric state, the approximate microcanonical ensemble state also exists. The parameter λ0 is associated with the entanglement entropy of A and Rényi entropy in the limit n → ∞. As an application of the above conclusion we reform the equality case of the Araki-Lieb inequality of the entanglement entropies of two intervals in vacuum state of 2D CFTs as conditions of Holevo information. We show the constraints on the eigenstates. Finally, we point out some unsolved problems and their significance on understanding the geometric states.

Topological Entanglement Rényi Entropy and Reduced Density Matrix Structure

Steven T. Flammia, Alioscia Hamma, Taylor L. Hughes +1 more

We generalize the topological entanglement entropy to a family of topological Rényi entropies parametrized by a parameter alpha, in an attempt to find new invariants for distinguishing topologically ordered phases. We show that, surprisingly, all topological Rényi entropies are the same, independent of alpha for all nonchiral topological phases. This independence shows that topologically ordered ground-state wave functions have reduced density matrices with a certain simple structure, and no additional universal information can be extracted from the entanglement spectrum.

Capacity of entanglement for scalar fields in squeezed states

M. Reza Mohammadi Mozaffar

We study various aspects of capacity of entanglement in the squeezed states of a scalar field theory. This quantity is a quantum informational counterpart of heat capacity and characterizes the width of the eigenvalue spectrum of the reduced density matrix. In particular, we carefully examine the dependence of capacity of entanglement and its universal terms on the squeezing parameter in the specific regimes of the parameter space. Remarkably, we find that the capacity of entanglement obeys a volume law in the large squeezing limit. We discuss how these results are consistent with the behavior of other entanglement measures including entanglement and Renyi entropies. We also comment on the existence of consistent holographic duals for a family of Gaussian states with generic squeezing parameter based on the ratio of entanglement entropy and the capacity of entanglement. Analytical Derivation and Perturbative Structure of Entanglement Entropy in Quantum Field Theory: Covariance Matrix Formalism and Noncommutative Corrections

Vaidik A Sharma

Entanglement entropy (EE) is a pivotal quantity in quantum field theory (QFT) that captures the nonlocal correlations between subsystems, offering deep insights into the quantum structure of spacetime, field dynamics, and phase transitions. This work derives EE in QFT using the covariance matrix formalism, establishing its foundations through the von Neumann entropy of reduced density matrices. We analytically compute EE for coupled harmonic oscillators as a prototypical model, extending the results to quantum fields via perturbative expansions. In the context of Maxwell QFT, we analyze entropy corrections induced by external perturbations, revealing their fractal dynamics through the emergence of Julia sets. The study further incorporates noncommutative geometry, where the deformation of spacetime modifies the covariance matrix, field strength tensors, and modular indices. Numerical simulations validate the derived scaling laws, entropy corrections, and noncommutative effects. These findings provide a mathematically rigorous framework to explore the interplay between EE, field theory, and geometric structures in high-energy physics.

Comprehensive study of Entanglement Entropy in Quantum Field Theory: Analysis of Conformal Field Theory to Massive Field Extensions and Holographic Entanglement

Vaidik A Sharma, N. Madurai Meenachi

This paper provides an in-depth analysis of entanglement entropy (EE) in quantum field theory (QFT), with a particular focus on its computation using the replica trick and its applications to both conformal and non-conformal systems. Beginning with an introduction to the basics of QFT, the study explains how entanglement entropy quantifies the quantum correlations between subsystems in a pure state, represented by the von Neumann entropy of the reduced density matrix. The replica trick is employed to derive the entanglement entropy, involving path integrals over n-sheeted Riemann surfaces. The paper demonstrates the method’s utility in 1+1-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT), where the central charge governs universal properties of entropy. It further extends the analysis to massive field theories, finite systems, and topological phases, exploring how deviations from conformal symmetry affect entanglement. The work also delves into the AdS/CFT correspondence, showcasing how holographic techniques facilitate entanglement entropy calculations in higher-dimensional systems via the Ryu-Takayanagi formula. In addition, the study investigates entanglement entropy in quantum lattice systems, considering the effects of spatial and thermal fluctuations. Numerical methods are used to compute the scaling of entanglement entropy with interval length for varying system masses and temperatures, highlighting the influence of these parameters on entropy behavior. Fractal lattice structures are explored to uncover unique entropy scaling laws and self-similar entanglement patterns. This study advances the under-standing of EE in diverse quantum systems and establishes a foundation for exploring its role in quantum criticality and fractal geometries. The paper also explores multiscale entanglement entropy (MSE), offering a comprehensive framework for future research in quantum critical phenomena and non-equilibrium systems, shedding light on the complex relationship between quantum entanglement and thermal effects. This work serves as a foundational reference for future theoretical and computational studies in quantum entanglement

Universality in the geometric dependence of Rényi entropy

Aitor Lewkowycz, Eric Perlmutter

We derive several new results for Rényi entropy, S n , across generic entangling surfaces. We establish a perturbative expansion of the Rényi entropy, valid in generic quantum field theories, in deformations of a given density matrix. When applied to even-dimensional conformal field theories, these results lead to new constraints on the n-dependence, independent of any perturbative expansion. In 4d CFTs, we show that the n-dependence of the universal part of the ground state Rényi entropy for entangling surfaces with vanishing extrinsic curvature contribution is in fact fully determined by the Rényi entropy across a sphere in flat space. Using holography, we thus provide the first computations of Rényi entropy across non-spherical entangling surfaces in strongly coupled 4d CFTs. Furthermore, we address the possibility that in a wide class of 4d CFTs, the flat space spherical Rényi entropy also fixes the n-dependence of the extrinsic curvature contribution, and hence that of arbitrary entangling surfaces. Our results have intriguing implications for the structure of generic modular Hamiltonians.
