Abstract

A bstract The recently introduced concept of timelike entanglement entropy has sparked a lot of interest. Unlike the traditional spacelike entanglement entropy, timelike entanglement entropy involves tracing over a timelike subsystem. In this work, we propose an extension of timelike entanglement entropy to Euclidean space (“temporal entanglement entropy”), and relate it to the renormalization group (RG) flow. Specifically, we show that tracing over a period of Euclidean time corresponds to coarse-graining the system and can be connected to momentum space entanglement. We employ Holography, a framework naturally embedding RG flow, to illustrate our proposal. Within cutoff holography, we establish a direct link between the UV cutoff and the smallest resolvable time interval within the effective theory through the irrelevant $$T\overline{T }$$ deformation. Increasing the UV cutoff results in an enhanced capability to resolve finer time intervals, while reducing it has the opposite effect. Moreover, we show that tracing over a larger Euclidean time interval is formally equivalent to integrating out more UV degrees of freedom (or lowering the temperature). As an application, we point out that the temporal entanglement entropy can detect the critical Lifshitz exponent z in non-relativistic theories which is not accessible from spatial entanglement at zero temperature and density.

Holographic timelike entanglement entropy in non-relativistic theories

Mir Afrasiar, Jaydeep Kumar Basak, Dimitrios Giataganas

A bstract Timelike entanglement entropy is a complex measure of information that is holographically realized by an appropriate combination of spacelike and timelike extremal surfaces. This measure is highly sensitive to Lorentz invariance breaking. In this work, we study the timelike entanglement entropy in non-relativistic theories, focusing on theories with hyperscaling violation and Lifshitz-like spatial anisotropy. The properties of the extremal surfaces, as well as the timelike entanglement entropy itself, depend heavily on the symmetry-breaking parameters of the theory. Consequently, we show that timelike entanglement can encode, to a large extent, the stability and naturalness of the theory. Furthermore, we find that timelike entanglement entropy identifies Fermi surfaces either through the logarithmic behavior of its real part or, alternatively, via its constant imaginary part, with this constant value depending on the theory’s Lifshitz exponent. This provides a novel interpretation for the imaginary component of this pseudoentropy. Additionally, we examine temporal entanglement entropy, an extension of timelike entanglement entropy to Euclidean space, and provide a comprehensive discussion of its properties in these theories.

Timelike Entanglement Entropy and Renormalization Group Flow Irreversibility

Giataganas, Dimitrios

We study holographic $c$-theorems based on timelike entanglement entropy and show that timelike $c$-functions capture irreversible renormalization group (RG) flow. We demonstrate that timelike $c$-functions are applicable to both relativistic and nonrelativistic quantum matter in nematic phases with broken rotational symmetry, and that they remain monotonic along holographic anisotropic RG flows under explicit geometric conditions, thereby passing some of the most stringent consistency tests. We derive the exact flow of the composite timelike $c$-function in general homogeneous anisotropic geometries and establish the $c$-theorem for adiabatic flows. Across all classes of scaling backgrounds examined, consistent with the null energy condition and thermodynamic stability, the monotonicity condition universally reduces to a constraint on a running geometric effective dimension. We further construct a second $c$-function purely from the imaginary part of the timelike entanglement entropy and prove its monotonicity under the local effective-dimension condition, without requiring adiabaticity. For Poincaré-invariant flows, this condition follows directly from the null energy condition. Moreover, we identify a geometric upper bound on the rate of change of the timelike $c$-functions, which constrains how rapidly effective degrees of freedom can be coarse-grained. Our results suggest that capturing RG irreversibility in nonrelativistic flows requires observables that are intrinsically sensitive to the temporal direction. The applicability of holographic $c$-theorems is thus extended to highly nontrivial RG flows and points toward a new information-theoretic diagnostic of holographic RG dynamics.

Holographic timelike c -function

Dimitrios Giataganas

The integration of high-energy degrees of freedom along the renormalization group (RG) flow in Poincaré-invariant theories is captured by a monotonic c -function. For such theories, holographic c -functions have been constructed using entanglement entropy. However, in theories with broken Lorentz invariance, these constructions generally fail, reflecting both the violation of entanglement RG monotonicity and its limitations in capturing essential features of nonrelativistic RG flows. Since many quantum many-body systems lack Lorentz invariance, it is important to identify a quantity that captures the decrease of effective degrees of freedom along such flows. We show that the recently introduced holographic timelike entanglement entropy naturally gives rise to a new c -function applicable to all such theories, which moreover obeys a geometric upper bound on its rate of change. We further demonstrate the existence of this c -function in theories with Lifshitz and hyperscaling-violating fixed points, showing that, provided the null energy condition and thermodynamic stability are satisfied, it obeys the expected RG monotonicity.

Timelike entanglement entropy in dS3/CFT2

Xin Jiang, Peng Wang, Houwen Wu +1 more

Abstract In the context of dS3/CFT2, we propose a timelike entanglement entropy defined by the renormalization group flow. This timelike entanglement entropy is calculated in CFT by using the Callan-Symanzik equation. We find an exact match between this entanglement entropy and the length of a timelike geodesic connecting two different spacelike surfaces in dS3. The counterpart of this entanglement entropy in AdS3 is a spacelike one, also induced by RG flow and extends all the way into the bulk of AdS3. As a result, in both AdS3/CFT2 and dS3/CFT2, there exist exactly three entanglement entropies, providing precisely sufficient information to reconstruct the three-dimensional bulk geometry.

Entanglement of general subregions in time-dependent states

Tao Liu, Wu-zhong Guo, Song He

A bstract We develop a unified framework for computing Rényi and entanglement entropies of arbitrary spacetime intervals in time-dependent states of (1 + 1)-dimensional conformal field theories. By combining the spacetime density matrix formalism with the replica method, we show that entanglement entropy is well defined for both spacelike and timelike separations. Applying this framework to global quenches prepared by boundary states and to local quenches generated by operator insertions, we obtain analytic expressions for the entanglement entropy in general spacetime configurations. The results reveal qualitative differences between spacelike and timelike intervals: the timelike entanglement entropy is time-independent in the global quench model, depends solely on the temporal separation, and universally exhibits a constant imaginary contribution. These features are naturally explained by a generalized quasiparticle picture in which entanglement is produced precisely when one worldline of each quasiparticle pair intersects the interval. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the linear sum rule relating time- and spacelike entanglement persists in both global and local quenches, indicating a broader universality of spacetime entanglement in real-time quantum dynamics.

Relation between time- and spacelike entanglement entropy

Wu-zhong Guo, Song He, Yu-Xuan Zhang

In this study, we establish a connection between time- and spacelike entanglement entropy. We show that timelike entanglement entropy is closely related to spacelike entanglement entropy and its temporal derivative. For a broad class of states, it can be uniquely determined by a linear combination of spacelike entanglement entropy and its first-order temporal derivative. This relation holds, for instance, in states conformally equivalent to the vacuum in two-dimensional conformal field theories. For more general states, we demonstrate that the relation can be constructed perturbatively. Our results suggest that timelike entanglement entropy is constrained by causality. Moreover, this relation provides a unified framework for time- and spacelike entanglement entropy, within which the imaginary component of timelike entanglement entropy can be understood as arising from the noncommutativity between the twist operator and its first-order temporal derivative.
