Abstract

We study the uniform $\text{U}(1)$ quantum spin liquid (QSL) with low-energy fermionic quasiparticles for pyrochlore magnets with dipolar-octupolar symmetry, employing a fermionic parton mean-field theory approach. Self-consistent calculations stabilize 12 fully symmetric uniform $\text{U}(1)$ QSLs, of which four mean-field states are ``monopole-flux'' states. Several of these mean-field states show a linear temperature dependence of specific heat at low temperatures, the other phases show a power-law temperature dependence of specific heat $C\ensuremath{\sim}{T}^{\ensuremath{\alpha}}$. The linear temperature dependence of specific heat at low temperatures is reminiscent of the observations in ${\text{Nd}}_{2}{\text{ScNbO}}_{7}$. We further compute the dynamic spin structure factors and discuss the possible signature of these fermionic spinons in neutron-scattering experiments.

Projective symmetry group classification of fermionic $Z_2$ spin liquids on the dipolar-octupolar pyrochlore magnets

Rohit Deb, Sambuddha Sanyal

We construct and classify $Z_2$ quantum spin liquids (QSLs) of fermionic partons on the dipolar-octupolar (DO) pyrochlore lattice. The DO pseudospin shares the space-group and time-reversal algebra of the effective spin-1/2 Kramers doublet, its projective symmetry group (PSG) yields the same 48 symmetric $Z_2$ classes as the generic fermionic classification. We show, the distinct DO symmetry action, encoded in a set of sublattice-independent operators, selects a physically different set of symmetry-allowed mean-field channels, so that the resulting ansatze, spinon spectra, and observables differ from both the effective spin-1/2 case and the bosonic DO classification. Decomposing the anisotropic XYZ exchange model into all symmetric singlet and triplet hopping and pairing channels and minimizing the mean-field energy self-consistently, we obtain phase diagrams in the ($\tilde{J_x}, \tilde{J_z}$) plane in which only a few $Z_2$ states, several supporting gapless or flat-band spinon spectra, are stabilized. For these states we compute the spinon band structures, the low-temperature specific heat, and the dynamical spin structure factor, and we argue that the power-law specific-heat exponent is a diagnostic of the spinon nodal structure. A near-linear-in-temperature specific heat together with broad continua in the structure factor gives a fermionic-parton account of the gapless, fractionalized thermodynamics reported in DO materials such as $Nd_2ScNbO_7$, complementing the bosonic quantum-spin-ice picture of the Ce-based compounds. The work extends the fermionic-parton classification of DO pyrochlore QSLs beyond the $U(1)$ sector, where $Z_2$ topological order is realized equally naturally by fermionic and bosonic spinons.

Symmetric U(1) and Z 2 spin liquids on the pyrochlore lattice

Chunxiao Liu, Gábor B. Halász, Leon Balents

Here, the authors report the discovery of novel types of U(1) and \ensuremath{\mathbb{Z}}${}_{2}$ quantum spin liquids on the pyrochlore lattice through a projective symmetry group classification. The classification highlights a special type of U(1) spin liquid, possessing an unusual symmetry-protected gapless multi-nodal-line structure in the spinon bands. The effect of gauge fluctuations for such a nodal structure is discussed. The leading contributions to the low-temperature specific heat are calculated, providing a clear experimental diagnostic of this U(1) spin liquid.

Dynamics and stability of U(1) spin liquids beyond mean-field theory: Triangular-lattice $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model

Josef Willsher, Johannes Knolle

Quantum spin liquids (QSLs) are long-range entangled phases of frustrated magnets exhibiting fractionalised spin excitations. In two dimensions, there is limited analytical understanding of their excitation spectra beyond parton mean-field theories, which fail to capture many features of the finite frequency dynamical response. We use a self-consistent mean-field theory combined with the random phase approximation (RPA) for the $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice to describe the strong spinon-spinon interactions of the U(1) Dirac QSL. We obtain quantitative results for the dynamical spin structure factor and phase diagram compatible with comprehensive numerical efforts. We show the continuum response at the Brillouin zone corners is described by a spinon-exciton hybridised with monopole gauge excitations. We further show that the transition from the QSL to 120-degree coplanar order is in the QED$_3$ O(3)-GN universality class. We extend the method to chiral QSLs and XXZ anisotropy, and discuss its broad range of applicability to other models and for describing inelastic neutron scattering experiments in KYbSe$_2$.

Exploring Fractionalization in Quantum Spin Ice

Félix Desrochers

The presence of multiple competing interactions in spin systems can lead to novel phases known as quantum spin liquids (QSLs). QSLs are disordered spin systems with long-range entanglement that realize the deconfined phase of emergent lattice gauge theories and host fractional excitations. A notable example of great experimental interest is quantum spin ice (QSI), a three-dimensional QSL that realizes an analog of quantum electrodynamics with emergent photons and interacting electric and magnetic charges. The current leading candidate materials for realizing QSI are dipolar-octupolar (DO) cerium-based pyrochlore compounds. These are believed to stabilize a $U(1)$ QSL known as $\pi$-flux QSI, where translation symmetry acting on spinon excitations fractionalizes. In this thesis, we explore the physics of QSI, relying heavily on parton constructions, to make experimentally relevant predictions for DO materials. First, we explore the physics of symmetry fractionalization in QSI, whereby lattice symmetries are realized projectively when acting on fractional quasiparticles. Symmetry fractionalization is examined within the framework of gauge mean-field theory (GMFT), a parton construction designed explicitly for application to QSI. This study shows that the pyrochlore lattice space group strongly constrains possible symmetry fractionalization classes. It systematically explains how all space group transformations, beyond translation, fractionalize in $\pi$-flux QSI. Next, we apply this framework to DO materials and show how the equal-time structure factor predicted for $\pi$-flux QSI is consistent with recent energy-integrated inelastic neutron scattering experiments on certain candidate materials. We also predict that the dynamical spin structure factor of $\pi$-flux QSI is characterized by a broad continuum with three distinctive peaks of decreasing intensity that are approximately equally spaced. We argue that these peaks should be accessible with currently available experimental apparatus and offer a smoking-gun signature of $\pi$-flux QSI. We confirm those predictions by extending the exclusive boson representation and speculate on the thermodynamic behavior of cerium candidates. We close by commenting on recent experimental breakthroughs and possible future directions.

Classification and correlation signatures of chiral spin liquids on the pyrochlore lattice

Chunxiao Liu, Leon Balents, Yasir Iqbal

Abstract We present a systematic classification and variational study of chiral quantum spin liquids on the pyrochlore lattice based on fermionic parton constructions. Focusing on chiral U ( 1 ) and Z 2 spin-liquid Ansätze , we characterize their symmetry properties, flux structures, and low-energy spinon spectra within a projective symmetry group framework, and incorporate gauge fluctuations through Gutzwiller-projected wave functions studied by variational Monte Carlo. From the equal-time spin structure factor, we develop correlation-based diagnostics that distinguish gauge-dominated Coulomb phases from states with substantial matter-field and short-range contributions. Distinct chiral flux sectors, though close in energy, exhibit markedly different degrees of emergent U ( 1 ) gauge-field dominance, reflected in the geometry and contrast of pinch-point singularities. Although these states are not competitive ground states of the nearest-neighbor Heisenberg model, they define a physically meaningful family of proximate chiral phases relevant to extended pyrochlore Hamiltonians.

Hidden phases born of a quantum spin liquid: Application to pyrochlore spin ice

Hyeok-Jun Yang, Nic Shannon, SungBin Lee

Quantum spin liquids (QSLs) have generated considerable excitement as phases of matter with emergent gauge structures and fractionalized excitations. In this context, phase transitions out of QSLs have been widely discussed as Higgs transitions from deconfined to confined phases of a lattice gauge theory. However, the possibility of a wider range of novel phases, occurring between these two limits, has yet to be systematically explored. In this Research Letter, we develop a formalism which allows for interactions between fractionalized quasiparticles coming from the constraint on the physical Hilbert space and can be used to search for exotic, hidden phases. Taking pyrochlore spin ice as a starting point, we show how a U(1) QSL can give birth to abundant daughter phases, without the need for fine-tuning of parameters. These include a (charged) ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ QSL and a supersolid. We discuss implications for experiment, and numerical results which support our analysis. These results are of broad relevance to QSLs subject to a parton description and offer a useful perspective in the search for exotic hidden phases in quantum magnets.
