Abstract

Non-Gaussian entangled states play a crucial role in harnessing quantum advantage in continuous-variable quantum information. However, how to fully characterize N-partite (N > 3) non-Gaussian entanglement without quantum state tomography remains elusive, leading to a very limited understanding of the underlying entanglement mechanism. Here, we propose several necessary and sufficient conditions for the positive-partial-transposition separability of multimode nonlinear quantum states resulting from high-order Hamiltonians and successive beam splitting operations. When applied to the initial state, the beam-splitter operations induce the emergence of different types of entanglement mechanisms, including pairwise high-order entanglement, collective high-order entanglement and the crossover between the two. We show numerically that for the four-mode scenario, the threshold for the existence of entanglement for any bipartition does not exceed the entanglement of the original state at fixed high-order moments. These results provide a new perspective for understanding multipartite nonlinear entanglement and will promote their application in quantum information processing.

Hierarchy of Nonlinear Entanglement Dynamics for Continuous Variables

Zhang Da, David Barral, Yin Cai +3 more

The entanglement produced by a bilinear Hamiltonian in continuous variables has been thoroughly studied and widely used. In contrast, the physics of entanglement resulting from nonlinear interaction described by partially degenerate high-order Hamiltonians remains unclear. Here, we derive a hierarchy of sufficient and necessary conditions for the positive-partial-transposition separability of bipartite nonlinear quantum states. The proposed criteria detect the nonpositive-partial-transposition inseparability of higher-order moments of states, which provides a systematic framework for the characterization of this kind of entanglement. Through numerical simulation of cubic and quartic Hamiltonians, we demonstrate the existence and competition of a hierarchy of entanglement witnesses, revealing the mechanism underlying such entanglement. Our results may provide a new direction in continuous variable quantum information processing.

Characterizing Multipartite non-Gaussian Entanglement for a Three-Mode Spontaneous Parametric Down-Conversion Process

Mingsheng Tian, Yu Xiang, Feng-Xiao Sun +2 more

Very recently, strongly non-Gaussian states have been observed via a direct three-mode spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a superconducting cavity [Phys. Rev. X 10, 011011 (2020)]. The created multiphoton non-Gaussian correlations are attractive and useful for various quantum information tasks. However, how to detect and classify multipartite non-Gaussian entanglement has not yet been completely understood. Here, we present an experimentally practical method to characterize continuous-variable multipartite non-Gaussian entanglement, by introducing a class of nonlinear squeezing parameters involving accessible higher-order moments of phase-space quadratures. As these parameters can depend on arbitrary operators, we consider their analytical optimization over a set of practical measurements, in order to detect different classes of multipartite non-Gaussian entanglement ranging from fully separable to fully inseparable. We demonstrate that the nonlinear squeezing parameters act as an excellent approximation to the quantum Fisher information within accessible third-order moments. The level of the nonlinear squeezing quantifies the metrological advantage provided by those entangled states. Moreover, by analyzing the above-mentioned experiment, we show that our method can be readily used to confirm fully inseparable tripartite non-Gaussian entangled states by performing a limited number of measurements without requiring full knowledge of the quantum state.

Genuine Tripartite Non-Gaussian Entanglement

Zhang Da, David Barral, Yanpeng Zhang +2 more

Triple-photon states generated by three-mode spontaneous parametric down-conversion are the paradigm of unconditional non-Gaussian states, essential assets for quantum advantage. How to fully characterize their non-Gaussian entanglement remains however elusive. We propose here a set of sufficient and necessary conditions for separability of the broad family of spontaneously generated three-mode non-Gaussian states. We further derive state-of-the-art conditions for genuine tripartite non-Gaussian entanglement, the strongest class of entanglement. We apply our criteria to triple-photon states revealing that they are fully inseparable and genuinely entangled in moments of order 3n. Our results establish a systematic framework for characterizing the entanglement of triple-photon states and thus fostering their application in quantum information protocols.

Entanglement in continuous-variable systems: recent advances and current perspectives

Gerardo Adesso, Fabrizio Illuminati

We review the theory of continuous-variable entanglement with special emphasis on foundational aspects, conceptual structures and mathematical methods. Much attention is devoted to the discussion of separability criteria and entanglement properties of Gaussian states, for their great practical relevance in applications to quantum optics and quantum information, as well as for the very clean framework that they allow for the study of the structure of nonlocal correlations. We give a self-contained introduction to phase-space and symplectic methods in the study of Gaussian states of infinite-dimensional bosonic systems. We review the most important results on the separability and distillability of Gaussian states and discuss the main properties of bipartite entanglement. These include the extremal entanglement, minimal and maximal, of two-mode mixed Gaussian states, the ordering of two-mode Gaussian states according to different measures of entanglement, the unitary (reversible) localization and the scaling of bipartite entanglement in multimode Gaussian states. We then discuss recent advances in the understanding of entanglement sharing in multimode Gaussian states, including the proof of the monogamy inequality of distributed entanglement for all Gaussian states. Multipartite entanglement of Gaussian states is reviewed by discussing its qualification by different classes of separability, and the main consequences of the monogamy inequality, such as the quantification of genuine tripartite entanglement in three-mode Gaussian states, the promiscuous nature of entanglement sharing in symmetric Gaussian states and the possible coexistence of unlimited bipartite and multipartite entanglement. We finally review recent advances and discuss possible perspectives on the qualification and quantification of entanglement in non-Gaussian states, a field of research that is to a large extent yet to be explored.

Characterizing the Multipartite Entanglement Structure of Non-Gaussian Continuous-Variable States with a Single Evolution Operator

Mingsheng Tian, Xiaoting Gao, Boxuan Jing +4 more

Multipartite entanglement is an essential resource for quantum information tasks, but characterizing entanglement structures in continuous-variable systems remains challenging, especially in multimode non-Gaussian scenarios. In this Letter, we introduce an efficient method for detecting multipartite entanglement structures in continuous-variable states. Based on the quantum Fisher information, we propose a systematic approach to identify an encoding operator that can efficiently capture the quantum correlations in multimode non-Gaussian states. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method on over 10^{5} randomly generated multimode-entangled quantum states, achieving a very high success rate in entanglement detection. Additionally, the robustness of our method can be considerably enhanced against losses by expanding the set of accessible operators. This Letter provides a general framework for characterizing entanglement structures in diverse continuous-variable systems, enabling a number of experimentally relevant applications.
