Abstract

Abstract Consider two boundary subregions A and B that lie in a common boundary Cauchy surface, and consider also the associated HRT surface γ B for B. In that context, the constrained HRT surface γ A:B can be defined as the codimension-2 bulk surface anchored to A that is obtained by a maximin construction restricted to Cauchy slices containing γ B . As a result, γ A:B is the union of two pieces, $$ {\gamma}_{A:B}^B $$ γ A : B B and $$ {\gamma}_{A:B}^{\overline{B}} $$ γ A : B B ¯ lying respectively in the entanglement wedges of B and its complement $$ \overline{B} $$ B ¯ . Unlike the area $$ \mathcal{A}\left({\gamma}_A\right) $$ A γ A of the HRT surface γ A , at least in the semiclassical limit, the area $$ \mathcal{A}\left({\gamma}_{A:B}\right) $$ A γ A : B of γ A:B commutes with the area $$ \mathcal{A}\left({\gamma}_B\right) $$ A γ B of γ B . To study the entropic interpretation of $$ \mathcal{A}\left({\gamma}_{A:B}\right) $$ A γ A : B , we analyze the Rényi entropies of subregion A in a fixed-area state of subregion B. We use the gravitational path integral to show that the n ≈ 1 Rényi entropies are then computed by minimizing $$ \mathcal{A}\left({\gamma}_A\right) $$ A γ A over spacetimes defined by a boost angle conjugate to $$ \mathcal{A}\left({\gamma}_B\right) $$ A γ B . In the case where the pieces $$ {\gamma}_{A:B}^B $$ γ A : B B and $$ {\gamma}_{A:B}^{\overline{B}} $$ γ A : B B ¯ intersect at a constant boost angle, a geometric argument shows that the n ≈ 1 Rényi entropy is then given by $$ \frac{\mathcal{A}\left({\gamma}_{A:B}\right)}{4G} $$ A γ A : B 4 G

Modular flow as a disentangler

Abstract In holographic duality, the entanglement entropy of a boundary region is proposed to be dual to the area of an extremal codimension-2 surface that is homologous to the boundary region, known as the Hubeny-Rangamani-Takayanagi (HRT) surface. In this paper, we study when the HRT surfaces of two boundary subregions R, A are in the same Cauchy slice. This condition is necessary for the subregion-subregion mapping to be local for both subregions and for states to have a tensor network description. To quantify this, we study the area of a surface that is homologous to A and is extremal except at possible intersections with the HRT surface of R (minimizing over all such possible surfaces), which we call the constrained area. We give a boundary proposal for an upper bound of this quantity, a bound which is saturated when the constrained surface intersects the HRT surface of R at a constant angle. This boundary quantity is the minimum entropy of region A in a modular evolved state — a state that has been evolved unitarily with the modular Hamiltonian of R. We can prove this formula in two boundary dimensions or when the modular Hamiltonian is local. This modular minimal entropy is a boundary quantity that probes bulk causality and, from this quantity, we can extract whether two HRT surfaces are in the future or past of each other. These entropies satisfy some inequalities reminiscent of strong subadditivity and can be used to remove certain corner divergences.

Rényi entropies and area operator from gravity with Hayward term

Botta Cantcheff, Marcelo Angel Nicolas, Pedro J. Martínez, Zárate Chahín, Juan Felipe

In the context of the holographic duality, the entanglement entropy of ordinary QFT in a subregion in the boundary is given by a quarter of the area of an minimal surface embedded in the bulk spacetime. This rule has been also extended to a suitable one-parameter generalization of the von-Neuman entropy $\\hat{S}_n$ that is related to the Renyi entropies $S_n$, as given by the area of a \\emph{cosmic brane} minimally coupled with gravity, with a tension related to $n$ that vanishes as $n\\to1$, and moreover, this parameter can be analytically extended to arbitrary real values. However, the brane action plays no role in the duality and cannot be considered a part of the theory of gravity, thus it is used as an auxiliary tool to find the correct background geometry. In this work we study the construction of the gravitational (reduced) density matrix from holographic states, whose wave-functionals are described as euclidean path integrals with arbitrary conditions on the asymptotic boundaries, and argue that in general, a non-trivial Hayward term must be haven into account. So we propose that the gravity model with a coupled Nambu-Goto action is not an artificial tool to account for the Renyi entropies, but it is present in the own gravity action through a Hayward term. As a result we show that the computations using replicas simplify considerably and we recover the holographic prescriptions for the measures of entanglement entropy; in particular, derive an area law for the original Renyi entropies ($S_n$) related to a minimal surface in the $n$ replicated spacetime. Moreover, we show that the gravitational modular flow contains the area operator and can explain the Jafferis-Lewkowycz-Maldacena-Suh proposal.

Link-area commutators in AdS3 area-networks

Jesse Held, Molly Kaplan, Donald M. Marolf +1 more

A bstract Random tensor networks (RTNs) have proved to be fruitful tools for modelling the AdS/CFT correspondence. Due to their flat entanglement spectra, when discussing a given boundary region R and its complement $$ \overline{R} $$ R ¯ , standard RTNs are most analogous to fixed-area states of the bulk quantum gravity theory, in which quantum fluctuations have been suppressed for the area of the corresponding HRT surface. However, such RTNs have flat entanglement spectra for all choices of R, $$ \overline{R} $$ R ¯ , while quantum fluctuations of multiple HRT-areas can be suppressed only when the corresponding HRT-area operators mutually commute. We probe the severity of such obstructions in pure AdS 3 Einstein-Hilbert gravity by constructing networks whose links are codimension-2 extremal-surfaces and by explicitly computing semiclassical commutators of the associated link-areas. Since d = 3, codimension-2 extremal-surfaces are geodesics, and codimension-2 ‘areas’ are lengths. We find a simple 4-link network defined by an HRT surface and a Chen-Dong-Lewkowycz-Qi constrained HRT surface for which all link-areas commute. However, the algebra generated by the link-areas of more general networks tends to be non-Abelian. One such non-Abelian example is associated with entanglement-wedge cross sections and may be of more general interest.

Radial cutoffs and holographic entanglement

Brianna Grado-White, Donald M. Marolf, Sean J. Weinberg

Abstract: \nTensor networks,$$ T\\overline{T} $$TT¯, and broader notions of a holographic principle all motivate the idea that some notion of gravitational holography should persist in the presence of a radial cutoff. But in the absence of time-reflection symmetry, the areas of Hubeny-Rangamani-Takayanagi surfaces anchored to the radial cutoff generally violate strong sub-additivity, even when the associated boundary regions are spacelike separated as defined by both bulk and boundary notions of causality. We thus propose an alternate definition of cutoff-holographic entropy using a restricted maximin prescription anchored to a codimension 2 cutoff surface. For bulk solutions that respect the null energy condition, we show that the resulting areas satisfy SSA, entanglement wedge nesting, and monogamy of mutual information in parallel with cutoff free results in AdS. These results hold even when the cutoff surface fails to be convex.

The gravity dual of Rényi entropy

Xi Dong

A remarkable yet mysterious property of black holes is that their entropy is proportional to the horizon area. This area law inspired the holographic principle, which was later realized concretely in gauge-gravity duality. In this context, entanglement entropy is given by the area of a minimal surface in a dual spacetime. However, discussions of area laws have been constrained to entanglement entropy, whereas a full understanding of a quantum state requires Rényi entropies. Here we show that all Rényi entropies satisfy a similar area law in holographic theories and are given by the areas of dual cosmic branes. This geometric prescription is a one-parameter generalization of the minimal surface prescription for entanglement entropy. Applying this we provide the first holographic calculation of mutual Rényi information between two disks of arbitrary dimension. Our results provide a framework for efficiently studying Rényi entropies and understanding entanglement structures in strongly coupled systems and quantum gravity.
