Abstract

In this paper, we revisit the operator-state correspondence in the Majorana conformal field theory (CFT) with emphasis on its semion representation. Whereas the semion representation (or ${Z}_{2}$ extension of the chiral Ising CFT) gives a concise ``Abelian'' (or invertible) representation at the level of fusion rules and quantum states, there exists a subtlety when considering the chiral multipoint correlation function. In this sense, the operator-state correspondence in the semion sector of the fermionic theory inevitably contains a difficulty coming from its anomalous conformal dimension $1/16$ as a ${Z}_{2}$ symmetry operator. By analyzing the asymptotic behaviors of the existing correlation functions, we propose a nontrivial correspondence between the chiral conformal blocks and bulk correlation functions containing both order and disorder fields. One can generalize this understanding to ${Z}_{N}$ models or fractional supersymmetric models (for which there exist long-standing open problems). We expect that this may improve our understanding of the simple current extension of CFT, which commonly appears in the studies of topologically ordered systems.

In and around abelian anyon models *

Liang Wang, Zhenghan Wang

Abstract Anyon models are algebraic structures that model universal topological properties in topological phases of matter and can be regarded as mathematical characterization of topological order in two spacial dimensions. It is conjectured that every anyon model, or mathematically unitary modular tensor category, can be realized as the representation category of some chiral conformal field theory, or mathematically vertex operator algebra/local conformal net. This conjecture is known to be true for abelian anyon models providing support for the conjecture. We reexamine abelian anyon models from several different angles. First anyon models are algebraic data for both topological quantum field theories and chiral conformal field theories. While it is known that each abelian anyon model can be realized by a quantum abelian Chern–Simons (CS) theory and chiral conformal field theory, the construction is not algorithmic. Our goal is to provide such an explicit algorithm for a K -matrix in CS theory and a positive definite even one for a lattice conformal field theory. Secondly anyon models and chiral conformal field theories underlie the bulk-edge correspondence for topological phases of matter. But there are interesting subtleties in this correspondence when stability of the edge theory and topological symmetry are taken into consideration. Therefore, our focus is on the algorithmic reconstruction of extremal chiral conformal field theories with small central charges. Finally we conjecture that a much stronger reconstruction holds for abelian anyon models: every abelian anyon model can be realized as the representation category of some non-lattice extremal vertex operator algebra generalizing the moonshine realization of the trivial anyon model.

Chiral conformal field theory for topological states and the anyon eigenbasis on the torus

Hua-Chen Zhang, Ying-Hai Wu, Tao Xiang +1 more

Model wave functions constructed from (1+1)D conformal field theory (CFT) have played a vital role in studying chiral topologically ordered systems. There usually exist multiple degenerate ground states when such states are placed on the torus. The common practice for dealing with this degeneracy within the CFT framework is to take a full correlator on the torus, which includes both holomorphic and antiholomorphic sectors, and decompose it into several conformal blocks. In this paper, we propose a pure chiral approach for the torus wave function construction. By utilizing the operator formalism, the wave functions are written as chiral correlators of holormorphic fields restricted to each individual topological sector. This method is not only conceptually much simpler, but also automatically provides us the anyon eigenbasis of the degenerate ground states (also known as the “minimally entangled states”). As concrete examples, we construct the full set of degenerate ground states for SO(n)1 and SU(n)1 chiral spin liquids on the torus, the former of which provide a complete wave function realization of Kitaev's sixteenfold way of anyon theories. We further characterize their topological orders by analytically computing the associated modular S and T matrices.

Fermionic fractional quantum Hall states: A modern approach to systems with bulk-edge correspondence

Yoshiki Fukusumi, Bo Yang

In contemporary physics, especially in condensed-matter physics, fermionic topological order and its protected edge modes is one of the most important objects. In this work, we propose a systematic construction of the cylinder partition corresponding to the fermionic fractional quantum Hall effect and a general mechanism for obtaining the candidates of the protected edge modes. In our construction, when the underlying conformal field theory has ${Z}_{2}$ duality defects corresponding to the fermionic ${Z}_{2}$ electric particle, we show that the fractional quantum Hall partition function has a fermionic T duality. This duality is analogous to (hopefully the same as) the dualities in the dual resonance models, typically known as supersymmetry, and it provides a renormalization-group (RG) theoretical understanding of the topological phases. We also introduce a modern understanding of bulk topological degeneracies and topological entanglement entropy. This understanding is based on the traditional tunnel problem and the recent conjecture of correspondence between bulk RG flow and boundary conformal field theory. Our formalism provides an intuitive and general understanding of the modern physics of topologically ordered systems in the traditional language of RG and fermionization, and it may serve as a complement to more mathematical physical frameworks such as fermionic category theories.

Applications of conformal field theories in topological phases of matter

Bo Han

This dissertation discusses some applications of conformal field theories (CFTs) in topological phases of matter. The first part is devoted to a discussion of coupled wire constructions of some novel quantum Hall systems. Through a theoretical coupled wire model, we construct strongly correlated electronic integer quantum Hall states with filling factor 16. The edge state is a bosonic chiral (E8)1 CFT, which is closely related to topological paramagnets in (3+1)d. As a distinguishing feature, these states support electric and thermal Hall transport violating the Wiedemann-Franz law. We further construct two descendant non-Abelian quantum Hall states at filling 8, each carrying bosonic chiral (G2)1 or (F4)1 edge theories, and hosting Fibonacci anyonic excitations in the bulk. Finally, we discover a new notion of particle-hole conjugation based on the E8 state that relates the G2 and F4 Fibonacci states, which is reminiscent of similar physics in half-filled Landau level. The second part is focused on the surface topological orders of 3D bulk topological systems. Symmetry protected and symmetry-enriched topological (SPT/SET) phases in three dimensions are quantum systems that support non-trivial two-dimensional surface states. These surface states develop finite excitation energy gaps when the relevant symmetries are broken. On the other hand, one-dimensional gapless modes can populate along interfaces that separate adjacent gapped surface domains with distinct symmetry-breaking orders. A surface strip pattern in general reduces the low-energy SPT/SET surface degrees of freedom onto a 2D array of gapless 1D channels. These channels can be coupled to one another by quasiparticle tunneling, and these inter-wire interactions collectively provide an effective description of the surface state. In this part, we study a general class of symmetry-preserving or breaking SPT/SET surface states that admit finite excitation energy gaps and Abelian topological orders via the coupled wire construction. In particular, we focus on the prototype Abelian surface topological orders that fall under the ADE classification of simply-laced Lie algebras. We also elaborate on the emergent symmetry and duality properties of the coupled wire models. The third part is to discuss the relation between the conformal boundary state and (2+1)d SPT phases. We propose a diagnostic tool for detecting nontrivial symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases protected by a symmetry group G in 2 + 1 dimensions. Our method is based on directly studying the 1 + 1-dimensional anomalous edge conformal field theory (CFT) of SPT phases. We claim that if the CFT is the edge theory of an SPT phase, then there must be an obstruction to cutting it open. This obstruction manifests as the non-existence of boundary states in the CFT that preserves both the conformal symmetry and the global symmetry G. We discuss the relation between edgeability and gappability in the presence of G. We study several examples including time-reversal symmetric topological insulators, ZN symmetric bosonic SPT phases, and Z2 × Z2 symmetric topological superconductors.

Composite-fermion wave functions as correlators in conformal field theory

T. H. Hansson, C.-C. Chang, Jainendra K. Jain +1 more

It is known that a subset of fractional quantum Hall wave functions has been expressed as conformal field theory (CFT) correlators, notably the Laughlin wave function [Phys. Rev. Lett. 50, 1395 (1983)] at filling factor $\ensuremath{\nu}=1∕m$ ($m$ odd) and its quasiholes, and the Pfaffian wave function at $\ensuremath{\nu}=1∕2$ and its quasiholes. We develop a general scheme for constructing composite-fermion (CF) wave functions from conformal field theory. Quasiparticles at $\ensuremath{\nu}=1∕m$ are created by inserting anyonic vertex operators, ${P}_{1∕m}(z)$, that replace a subset of the electron operators in the correlator. The one-quasiparticle wave function is identical to the corresponding CF wave function, and the two-quasiparticle wave function has correct fractional charge and statistics and is numerically almost identical to the corresponding CF wave function. We further show how to exactly represent the CF wave functions in the Jain series $\ensuremath{\nu}=s∕(2sp+1)$ [Phys. Rev. Lett. 63, 199 (1989); Composite Fermions (Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 2007)] as the CFT correlators of a new type of fermionic vertex operators, ${V}_{p,n}(z)$, constructed from $n$ free compactified bosons; these operators provide the CFT representation of composite fermions carrying $2p$ flux quanta in the $n\text{th}$ CF Landau level. We also construct the corresponding quasiparticle and quasihole operators and argue that they have the expected fractional charge and statistics. For filling fractions $2∕5$ and $3∕7$, we show that the chiral CFTs that describe the bulk wave functions are identical to those given by Wen's general classification [Int. J. Mod. Phys. B 6, 1711 (1992); Adv. Phys. 44, 405 (1995)] of quantum Hall states in terms of $K$ matrices and $l$ and $t$ vectors, and we propose that to be generally true. Our results suggest a general procedure for constructing quasiparticle wave functions for other fractional Hall states, as well as for constructing ground states at filling fractions not contained in the principal Jain series.

Matrix product state description of Halperin states

Valentin Crépel, Benoit Estienne, Bogdan Andrei Bernevig +2 more

Many fractional quantum Hall states can be expressed as a correlator of a given conformal field theory used to describe their edge physics. As a consequence, these states admit an economical representation as an exact matrix product state (MPS) that was extensively studied for the systems without any spin or any other internal degrees of freedom. In that case, the correlators are built from a single electronic operator, which is primary with respect to the underlying conformal field theory. We generalize this construction to the archetype of Abelian multicomponent fractional quantum Hall wave functions, the Halperin states. These can be written as conformal blocks involving multiple electronic operators and we explicitly derive their exact MPS representation. In particular, we deal with the caveat of the full wave-function symmetry and show that any additional SU(2) symmetry is preserved by the natural MPS truncation scheme provided by the conformal dimension. We use our method to characterize the topological order of the Halperin states by extracting the topological entanglement entropy. We also evaluate their bulk correlation lengths, which are compared to plasma analogy arguments.
