Abstract

Doublon-holon dynamics is investigated in a pumped one-dimensional Hubbard model with a staggered on-site Coulomb interaction at half-filling. When the system parameters are set to be in the Mott-insulating regime the equilibrium sublattice density of states exhibits several characteristic peaks, corresponding to the lower and upper Hubbard bands as well as hybridization bands. We study the linear absorption spectrum and find two main peaks characterizing the photon frequencies which excite the ground state to an excited state. For a system driven by a laser pulse with general intensity and frequency, both the energy absorption and the doublon-holon dynamics exhibit distinct behaviors as a function of laser amplitude and frequency. Single-photon processes are observed at low laser intensity where the energy is absorbed for resonant laser frequencies. For strong laser intensity multiphoton-induced dynamics are observed in the system that are confirmed by an evaluation of the Loschmidt amplitude. The contribution of multiphoton processes to site-resolved double occupancy is also characterized by the generalized Loschmidt amplitude. The site-resolved doublon-holon dynamics are observed in both the one and multiphoton processes and the site-resolved behavior is explained within a quasiparticle picture. Our study suggests strategies to optically engineer the doublon-holon dynamics in one-dimensional strongly correlated many-body systems.

Laser-induced commensurate-incommensurate transition of charge order in a Hubbard superlattice

Hua Chai, Zhenyu Cheng, Qinxin Hu +4 more

We investigate the nonequilibrium dynamics of charge density waves in a pumped one-dimensional Hubbard superlattice with staggered onsite Coulomb interactions at half-filling, using time-dependent exact diagonalization. In equilibrium, the system exhibits commensurate charge correlations consistent with the superlattice periodicity. Under laser excitation, the charge correlation function exhibits distinct behaviors across four representative frequencies, spanning both linear and nonlinear optical regimes. Notably, we observe a laser-induced commensurate-to-incommensurate transition in the charge order, manifested by a shift in the peak wavevector of the charge structure factor. This transition is driven by sublattice-selective doublon-holon dynamics, where the laser frequency and intensity determine whether excitations predominantly destabilize the charge order on the weakly or strongly interacting sublattice. Our analysis of the excitation spectrum and site-resolved correlation dynamics reveals the underlying mechanisms of this transition. These results suggest a promising optical strategy for controlling charge order in superlattice-based quantum materials.

Quasiparticle picture for high-harmonic generation in correlated electron systems

Kai Huang, Tao-Yuan Du

The key optical and electronic functionalities in condensed materials are determined by the band filling of electrons and their Coulomb correlations. To directly capture how many-body correlations influence the correlated electron dynamics under the driving of laser pulses, the comprehensible quasiparticle picture is desired to distinguish the ultrafast creation and annihilation of doublon-holon pairs in attosecond timescale. Here, we adopt the one-dimensional non-half-filling Hubbard model to study the high-harmonic generation (HHG) in correlated electron systems. As the value of Hubbard $U$ increases, the cutoff energy and spectral features in HHG spectra have been revealed and their scaling laws are explained by the characteristic energy gaps obtained from the electronic bands under the quasiparticle picture. The adjustable degree of band filling in correlated systems paves a way to enhance high-harmonic emissions by regulating the creation of doublon-holon pairs. The complex temporal profile of HHG is elucidated in this work by the light-induced evolution of quasiparticle bands in correlated materials. In addition, the dephasing of the HHG spectrum caused by the vibration-induced disorder or lattice temperature is affirmed in the correlated electron systems and this dephasing process is attributed to quasiparticle-lattice scattering during the doublons and holons propagating among the disordered lattice sites.

Tracking doublon-holon dynamics in high-harmonic generation from Mott insulators

Tao-Yuan Du, Hui-Ru Li, Bo Li +1 more

High-harmonic generation (HHG) in strongly correlated Mott insulators is investigated using exact diagonalization and time-dependent density-matrix propagation of a laser-driven one-dimensional Hubbard chain. By projecting onto equilibrium Hubbard bands, we use the doublon population and its dynamics as a diagnostic to analyze intraband (spin-wave-like) and interband (doublon-holon creation) excitation channels. A filling-dependent crossover emerges: Bloch-like intraband response at dilute filling, mixed dynamics at intermediate filling, and interband-dominated HHG with plateau and cutoff near half filling. In the considered parameter range, increasing interaction strength $U$ strongly suppresses interband contributions through the enlarged Mott gap and correlation-induced localization. Intra- and interband current decomposition reveals opposing flows below the Mott gap (Δ_{\mathrm{Mott}}) and selective dephasing suppression of interband coherence, enhancing net doublon accumulation. Time-frequency analysis uncovers the filling-dependent features of quantum trajectories, manifesting in distinct below-Δ_{\mathrm{Mott}} emission. This doublon-based analysis provides a transparent link between equilibrium spin-charge separation and nonequilibrium strong-field response, and clarifies how dephasing modifies interband coherence and doublon accumulation.

New Pathway to Impact Ionization in a Photoexcited One-Dimensional Ionic Hubbard Model

Zhenyu Cheng, Li Yang, Xiang Hu +3 more

Using the time-dependent Lanczos method, we study the nonequilibrium dynamics of the half-filled one-dimensional ionic Hubbard model, deep within the Mott insulating regime, under the influence of a transient laser pulse. In equilibrium, increasing the staggered potential in the Mott regime reduces the Mott gap and broadens the Hubbard bands, creating favorable conditions for impact ionization. After laser excitation, impact ionization is observed, with its occurrence depending on both the staggered potential and the laser pump frequency. By analyzing the time evolution of the kinetic, ionic, and Coulomb interaction energies, we identify a novel mechanism for impact ionization, in which excess ionic potential energy is converted into additional double occupancy-distinct from the conventional mechanism where excess kinetic energy drives this process. We further reveal that impact ionization arises from interference between excited states driven by photon excitations of the same order. These results present a new pathway for realizing impact ionization in strongly correlated electron systems.

Time-dependent spectral properties of a photoexcited one-dimensional ionic Hubbard model: an exact diagonalization study

Junichi Okamoto

Abstract Motivated by the recent progress in time-resolved nonequilibrium spectroscopy in condensed matter, we study an optically excited one-dimensional ionic Hubbard model by exact diagonalization. The model is relevant to organic crystals, transition metal oxides, or ultracold atoms in optical lattices. We implement numerical pump-probe measurements to calculate time-dependent conductivity and single-particle spectral functions. In general, short optical excitation induces a metallic behavior imprinted as a Drude peak in conductivity or an in-gap density of states. In a Mott insulator, we find that the induced Drude peak oscillates at the pump frequency and its second harmonic. The former comes from the oscillation of currents, and the latter from the interference of single- and three-photon excited states. In a band insulator, the Drude peak oscillates only at the pump frequency, and quantities such as the double occupancy do not oscillate. The absence of the second harmonic oscillation is due to the degeneracy of multi-photon excited states. The in-gap density of states in both insulators correlates with the Drude weight and the energy absorption for weak pumping. Strong pumping leads to saturation of the in-gap density of states and to suppression of the Drude weight in the Mott regime. We have also checked that the above features are robust for insulators in the intermediate parameter range. Our study demonstrates the distinct natures of the multi-photon excited states in two different insulators.

Photogenerated holon-doublon cluster states in strongly correlated low-dimensional electron systems

Hiroki Gomi, Akira Takahashi, Toshihiro Ueda +2 more

We theoretically investigate the properties of multiphoton excited states in strongly correlated one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) electron systems at half filling using the extended Hubbard model. In the 2D case, we find the photoexcited states where two or more than two holons and doublons are strongly bound, and the cluster of bound holons and doublons coexists with the surrounding antiferromagnetic (AF) spin order, for the realistic Coulomb interaction parameters. The holon-doublon cluster (HDC) states have a unique charge aggregation mechanism originating from the spin-spin interaction in the AF spin background as well as from the direct Coulomb interaction. In the 1D case, the HDC states are destabilized by the spin-spin interaction in contrast to the 2D case. These charge aggregation mechanisms are the outcomes of exotic natures of holons and doublons, and the difference in the mechanism between the 1D and 2D cases is due to the difference in the coupling between spin and charge degrees of freedom. We also calculate the light-induced absorption that enables us to experimentally observe the predicted HDC states.
