Holographic entanglement distillation from the surface state correspondence

Abstract

A bstract We study correlations between geometric subfactors living on the Ryu-Takayanagi surface that bounds the entanglement wedge. Using the surface-state correspondence and the bit threads program, we are able to calculate mutual information and conditional mutual information between subfactors. This enables us to count the shared Bell pairs between subfactors, and we propose an entanglement distillation procedure over these subsystems via a SWAP gate protocol. We comment on extending to multipartite entanglement.

Does connected wedge imply distillable entanglement?

Takato Mori, Beni Yoshida

A bstract The Ryu-Takayanagi formula predicts that two boundary subsystems A and C can exhibit large mutual information I ( A : C ) even when they are spatially disconnected on the boundary and separated by a buffer subsystem B , as long as A and C have connected entanglement wedge in the bulk. However, whether the reduced state ρ AC contains distillable EPR pairs has remained a longstanding open problem. In this work, we resolve this problem by showing that: i) there is no LO-distillable entanglement at leading order in G N , suggesting the absence of bipartite entanglement in a holographic mixed state ρ AC , and ii) one-shot, one-way LOCC-distillable entanglement is given at leading order by locally accessible information J W ( A | C ), which is related to the entanglement wedge cross section E W involving the (third) purifying system B via J W ( A | C ) = S A − E W ( A : B ). Namely, we demonstrate that a connected entanglement wedge does not necessarily imply nonzero distillable entanglement in one-shot, one-way LOCC. We also show that entanglement of formation E F ( A : C ) is given by E W ( A : C ) at leading order in holography.

Geometric aspects of holographic bit threads

César A. Agón, Jan De Boer A, Juan F. Pedraza

A bstract We revisit the recent reformulation of the holographic prescription to compute entanglement entropy in terms of a convex optimization problem, introduced by Freedman and Headrick. According to it, the holographic entanglement entropy associated to a boundary region is given by the maximum flux of a bounded, divergenceless vector field, through the corresponding region. Our work leads to two main results: (i) We present a general algorithm that allows the construction of explicit thread configurations in cases where the minimal surface is known. We illustrate the method with simple examples: spheres and strips in vacuum AdS, and strips in a black brane geometry. Studying more generic bulk metrics, we uncover a sufficient set of conditions on the geometry and matter fields that must hold to be able to use our prescription. (ii) Based on the nesting property of holographic entanglement entropy, we develop a method to construct bit threads that maximize the flux through a given bulk region. As a byproduct, we are able to construct more general thread configurations by combining (i) and (ii) in multiple patches. We apply our methods to study bit threads which simultaneously compute the entanglement entropy and the entanglement of purification of mixed states and comment on their interpretation in terms of entanglement distillation. We also consider the case of disjoint regions for which we can explicitly construct the so-called multi-commodity flows and show that the monogamy property of mutual information can be easily illustrated from our constructions.

Correlation measures and distillable entanglement in AdS / CFT

Joshua Levin, Oliver Dewolfe A, Graeme Smith

Recent developments have exposed close connections between quantum information and holography. In this paper, we explore the geometrical interpretations of the recently introduced $Q$-correlation and $R$-correlation, ${E}_{Q}$ and ${E}_{R}$. We find that ${E}_{Q}$ admits a natural geometric interpretation via the surface-state correspondence: it is a minimal mutual information between a surface region $A$ and a cross section of $A$'s entanglement wedge with $B$. We note a strict trade-off between this minimal mutual information and the symmetric side-channel-assisted distillable entanglement from the environment $E$ to $A$, ${I}^{ss}(E⟩A)$. We also show that the $R$-correlation, ${E}_{R}$, coincides holographically with the entanglement wedge cross section. This further elucidates the intricate relationship between entanglement, correlations, and geometry in holographic field theories.

Distilled density matrices of holographic partial entanglement entropy from thread-state correspondence

Yi-Yu Lin

Within the framework of holographic duality, conditional mutual information (CMI) is often understood as a correlation between ``region pairs'' and is closely related to the concept of partial entanglement entropy (PEE). The main theme of this paper is to try to understand the rigorous physical meaning of such a region-pair correlation. This relies on the idea of holographic bit threads and the recently developed thread-state correspondence. In a sense, this effort also prompted us to give a definition of PEE based on the density matrices of the holographic distilled states. Specifically, drawing from experience with the locking multiflow configuration, we first provide a bipartite entanglement explanation for the $\mathrm{PEE}=\mathrm{CMI}$ scheme, but it leads to difficulties in characterizing the entanglement entropy of disconnected regions. We then introduce multipartite entanglement through the generalized $n$-thread/perfect tensor state correspondence to solve this problem and explain the coincidence between CMI and tripartite information in the holographic quantum systems.

Towards a bit threads derivation of holographic entanglement of purification

Ning Bao, Aidan Chatwin-Davies, Jason Pollack +1 more

Abstract We apply the bit thread formulation of holographic entanglement entropy to reduced states describing only the geometry contained within an entanglement wedge. We argue that a certain optimized bit thread configuration, which we construct, gives a purification of the reduced state to a full holographic state obeying a precise set of conditional mutual information relations. When this purification exists, we establish, under certain assumptions, the conjectured E P = E W relation equating the entanglement of purification with the area of the minimal cross section partitioning the bulk entanglement wedge. Along the way, we comment on minimal purifications of holographic states, geometric purifications, and black hole geometries.

Fine structure in holographic entanglement

Qiang Wen

We explore the fine structure of the holographic entanglement entropy proposal (the Ryu-Takayanagi formula) in AdS$_3$/CFT$_{2}$. With the guidance from the boundary and bulk modular flows we find a natural slicing of the entanglement wedge with the modular planes, which are co-dimension one bulk surfaces tangent to the modular flow everywhere. This gives an one-to-one correspondence between the points on the boundary interval $\mathcal{A}$ and the points on the Ryu-Takayanagi (RT) surface $\mathcal{E}_{\mathcal{A}}$. In the same sense an arbitrary subinterval $\mathcal{A}_2$ of $\mathcal{A}$ will correspond to a subinterval $\mathcal{E}_2$ of $\mathcal{E}_{\mathcal{A}}$. We propose that the length of $\mathcal{E}_2$ captures the contribution from $\mathcal{A}_2$ to the entanglement entropy $S_{\mathcal{A}}$, and compare it with the mutual information between $\mathcal{A}_2$ and the complement $\mathcal{A}^c$.

We also show that the RRR-correlation, ER{E}_{R}ER, coincides holographically with the entanglement wedge cross section. This further elucidates the intricate relationship between entanglement, correlations, and geometry in holographic field theories.
