Abstract

Abstract We give a complete classification of the anyon sectors of Kitaev’s quantum double model on the infinite triangular lattice and for finite gauge group G, including the non-abelian case. As conjectured, the anyon sectors of the model correspond precisely to equivalence classes of irreducible representations of the quantum double algebra of G.

The Category of Anyon Sectors for Non-Abelian Quantum Double Models

Alex Bols, Mahdie Hamdan, Pieter Naaijkens +1 more

Abstract We study Kitaev’s quantum double model for arbitrary finite gauge group in infinite volume, using an operator-algebraic approach. The quantum double model hosts anyonic excitations which can be identified with equivalence classes of ‘localized and transportable endomorphisms’, which produce anyonic excitations from the ground state. Following the Doplicher–Haag–Roberts (DHR) sector theory from AQFT, we organize these endomorphisms into a braided monoidal category capturing the fusion and braiding properties of the anyons. We show that this category is equivalent to $$\textbf{Rep}_f {{\mathcal {D}}}(G)$$ Rep f D ( G ) , the representation category of the quantum double of G . This establishes for the first time the full DHR structure for a class of 2d quantum lattice models with non-abelian anyons.

Dynamical Abelian anyons with bound states and scattering states

Sven Bachmann, Bruno Nachtergaele, Siddharth Vadnerkar

We introduce a family of quantum spin Hamiltonians on Z2 that can be regarded as perturbations of Kitaev’s Abelian quantum double models that preserve the gauge and duality symmetries of these models. We analyze in detail the sector with one electric charge and one magnetic flux and show that the spectrum in this sector consists of both bound states and scattering states of Abelian anyons. Concretely, we have defined a family of lattice models in which Abelian anyons arise naturally as finite-size quasi-particles with non-trivial dynamics that consist of a charge-flux pair. In particular, the anyons exhibit a non-trivial holonomy with a quantized phase, consistent with the gauge and duality symmetries of the Hamiltonian.

Haag duality for Kitaev’s quantum double model for abelian groups

Leander Fiedler, Pieter Naaijkens

We prove Haag duality for cone-like regions in the ground state representation corresponding to the translational invariant ground state of Kitaev’s quantum double model for finite abelian groups. This property says that if an observable commutes with all observables localized outside the cone region, it actually is an element of the von Neumann algebra generated by the local observables inside the cone. This strengthens locality, which says that observables localized in disjoint regions commute. As an application, we consider the superselection structure of the quantum double model for abelian groups on an infinite lattice in the spirit of the Doplicher–Haag–Roberts program in algebraic quantum field theory. We find that, as is the case for the toric code model on an infinite lattice, the superselection structure is given by the category of irreducible representations of the quantum double.

Boundary algebras of the Kitaev Quantum Double model

Mario Tomba, Shuqi Wei, Brett Hungar +4 more

The recent article [arXiv:2307.12552] gave local topological order (LTO) axioms for a quantum spin system, showed they held in Kitaev's Toric Code and in Levin-Wen string net models, and gave a bulk boundary correspondence to describe bulk excitations in terms of the boundary net of algebras. In this article, we prove the LTO axioms for Kitaev's Quantum Double model for a finite group $G$. We identify the boundary nets of algebras with fusion categorical nets associated to $(\mathsf{Hilb}(G),\mathbb{C}[G])$ or $(\mathsf{Rep}(G),\mathbb{C}^G)$ depending on whether the boundary cut is rough or smooth respectively. This allows us to make connections to work of Ogata on the type of the cone von Neumann algebras in the algebraic quantum field theory approach to topological superselection sectors. We show that the boundary algebras can also be calculated from a trivial $G$-symmetry protected topological phase ($G$-SPT), and that the gauging map preserves the boundary algebras. Finally, we compute the boundary algebras for the (3+1)D Quantum Double model associated to an abelian group.

Boundary algebras of the Kitaev quantum double model

The recent article by Jones et al. [arXiv:2307.12552 (2023)] gave local topological order (LTO) axioms for a quantum spin system, showed they held in Kitaev’s Toric Code and in Levin-Wen string net models, and gave a bulk boundary correspondence to describe bulk excitations in terms of the boundary net of algebras. In this article, we prove the LTO axioms for Kitaev’s Quantum Double model for a finite group G. We identify the boundary nets of algebras with fusion categorical nets associated to (Hilb(G),C[G]) or (Rep(G),CG) depending on whether the boundary cut is rough or smooth, respectively. This allows us to make connections to the work of Ogata [Ann. Henri Poincaré 25, 2353–2387 (2024)] on the type of the cone von Neumann algebras in the algebraic quantum field theory approach to topological superselection sectors. We show that the boundary algebras can also be calculated from a trivial G-symmetry protected topological phase (G-SPT), and that the gauging map preserves the boundary algebras. Finally, we compute the boundary algebras for the (3 + 1)D Quantum Double model associated to an Abelian group.

Simulations of quantum double models

Gavin K. Brennen, M. Aguado, J. I. Cirac

We demonstrate how to build a simulation of two-dimensional (2D) physical theories describing topologically ordered systems whose excitations are in one-to-one correspondence with irreducible representations of a Hopf algebra, D( G ), the quantum double of a finite group G . Our simulation uses a digital sequence of operations in a spin lattice model originally due to Kitaev to prepare a ground 'vacuum' state and to create, braid and fuse anyonic excitations. The simulation works with or without the presence of a background Hamiltonian though only in the latter case is the system topologically protected. We describe a physical realization of a simulation of the simplest non-Abelian model, D( S 3 ), using trapped neutral atoms in a 2D optical lattice and provide a sequence of steps to perform universal quantum computation with anyons. The use of ancillary spin degrees of freedom figures prominently in our construction and provides a novel technique to prepare and probe these systems.
