Unsharp Measurement with Adaptive Gaussian POVMs for Quantum-Inspired Image Processing

Debashis Saikia, Bikash K. Behera, Mayukha Pal +1 more

We propose a data-adaptive probabilistic intensity remapping framework for structure-preserving transformation of grayscale images. The suggested method formulates intensity transformation as a continuous, data-driven remapping process, in contrast to traditional histogram-based techniques that rely on hard thresholding and generate piecewise-constant mappings. The image statistics yield representative intensity values, and Gaussian-based weighting methods probabilistically allocate each pixel to several components. Smooth transitions while preserving structural features are achieved by computing the output intensity as an expectation over these components. A smooth transition from soft probabilistic remapping to hard assignment is made possible by the introduction of a nonlinear sharpening parameter $γ$ to regulate the degree of localization. This offers clear control over the trade-off between intensity discrimination and smoothing. Furthermore, the resolution of the remapping function is determined by the number of components $k$. When compared to thresholding-based methods, experimental results on standard benchmark images show that the suggested method achieves better structural fidelity and controlled information reduction as measured by PSNR, SSIM, and entropy. Overall, by allowing continuous, probabilistic intensity modifications, the framework provides a robust and efficient substitute for discrete thresholding.

Quantum violations of L u ¨ ders bound Leggett–Garg inequalities for non-unitary quantum channel

Asmita Kumari, A. K. Pan

Abstract Leggett Garg inequalities (LGIs) provides an elegant way for probing the incompatibility between the notion of macrorealism and quantum mechanics. For unitary dynamics the optimal quantum violation of a LGI is constrained by the L u ¨ ders bound. In this paper, we have studied two formulations of LGIs in three-time LG scenario, viz, the standard LGIs and third-order LGIs both for unbiased and biased measurement settings. We show that if system evolves under non-unitary quantum channel between two measurements, the quantum violations of both forms of LGIs exceed their respective L u ¨ ders bounds and can even reach their algebraic maximum in sharp measurement settings. We found that when the measurement is unsharp the quantum violations of both standard and third-order LGIs for non-unitary quantum channel can be obtained for lower value of the unsharpness parameter compared to the unitary dynamics. We critically examined the violation of L u ¨ ders bound of LGIs and its relation to the violation of various no-signaling in time conditions, another formalism for testing macrorealism. It is shown that mere violations of no-signaling conditions are not enough to warrant the violation of standard LGIs, an interplay between the violations of various NSIT condition along with a threshold value play an important role. On the other hand violation of third-order LGI is obtained when the degree of violation of a specific no-signaling in time condition reaches a different threshold value.

Implementation schemes for unsharp measurements with trapped ions

Sujit K. Choudhary, Thomas Konrad, Hermann Uys

Unsharp positive operator-valued measurements allow a variety of measurement applications which minimally disrupt the state of the quantum system. Experimental schemes are proposed for implementing unsharp measurements on the qubit levels of a trapped ion. The schemes rely on introducing weak entanglement between the state of a target ion and that of an auxiliary ion, using standard ion-trap quantum logic operations, and then realizing an unsharp measurement through projective measurement on the auxiliary atom. We analyze common sources of error and their effect on different applications of unsharp measurements.
