Abstract

We analyze the two-body spectrum within the Hofstadter-Hubbard model on a square lattice through an exact variational ansatz and study the topological properties of its low-lying two-body bound-state branches. In particular, we discuss how the Hofstadter-Hubbard butterfly of the two-body branches evolves as a function of onsite interactions and how to efficiently calculate their Chern numbers using the Fukui-Hatsugai-Suzuki approach. Our numerical results are fully consistent with the simple picture that appears in the strong-coupling limit, where the attraction between fermions forms a composite boson characterized by an effective hopping parameter and an effective magnetic-flux ratio.

Many-Body Chern Numbers of ν = 1/3 and 1/2 States on Various Lattices

Koji Kudo, Toshikaze Kariyado, Yasuhiro Hatsugai

For various two dimensional lattices such as honeycomb, kagome, and square-octagon, gauge conventions (string gauge) realizing minimum magnetic fluxes that are consistent with the lattice periodicity are explicitly given. Then many-body interactions of lattice fermions are projected into the Hofstadter bands to form pseudopotentials. By using these pseudopotentials, degenerate many-body ground states are numerically obtained. We further formulate a scheme to calculate the Chern number of the ground state multiplet by the pseudopotentials. For the filling factor of the lowest Landau level, $ν=1/3$, a simple scaling form of the energy gap are numerially obtained and the ground state is unique except the three-fold topological degeneracy. This is a quantum liquid, which can be lattice analogue of the Laughlin state. For the $ν=1/2$ case, validity of the composite fermion picture is discussed in relation to the existence of the Fermi surface. Effects of disorder are also described.

Topological two-body bands in a multiband Hubbard model

M. Iskin

In a multiband Hubbard model the self-consistency relations for the two-body bound-state bands are in the form of a nonlinear eigenvalue problem. Assuming that the resultant eigenvectors form an orthonormal set, e.g., in the strong-binding regime, here we reformulate their Berry curvatures and the associated Chern numbers. As an illustration we solve the two-body problem in a Haldane-Hubbard model with attractive on-site interactions and analyze its topological phase diagrams from weak to strong couplings, i.e., by keeping track of the gap closings in between the low-lying two-body bands. The resultant Chern numbers are consistent with the lobe structure of the phase diagrams in the strong-coupling regime.

Hofstadter-Hubbard model with opposite magnetic fields: BCS pairing and superfluidity in the nearly-flat butterfly bands

M. Iskin

Despite the multi-band spectrum of the widely-known Hofstadter butterfly, it turns out that the pairing correlations of the time-reversal-symmetric Hofstadter-Hubbard model are well-described by a single order parameter that is uniform in real space. By exploiting a BCS mean-field theory for the nearly-flat butterfly-bands regime of low magnetic-flux limit, here we reveal a number of unusual superfluid properties both in the ground state and at finite temperatures. Our thorough analysis includes but is not limited to the order parameter, condensate and superfluid fractions, and the critical BCS and BKT transition temperatures.

The Colored Hofstadter Butterfly as a Many-Body Quantum Hall Phase Diagram

Giovanna Marcelli, Tadahiro Miyao, Domenico Monaco +2 more

We prove that the colored Hofstadter butterfly has a many-body interpretation for a broad class of weakly interacting lattice fermion systems. Starting from a spectral gap of a Hofstadter-like one-particle Hamiltonian at arbitrary magnetic flux $b$, we construct an open region in the three-dimensional parameter space $(b,μ,λ)$ of magnetic field, chemical potential, and interaction strength on which the infinite-volume interacting system has locally unique gapped ground states. The construction combines quasi-adiabatic continuation in the interaction strength with denominator-independent magnetic perturbation estimates, and therefore covers both commensurate and incommensurate fluxes, where no finite magnetic unit cell exists. On connected uniformly gapped regions meeting the non-interacting plane $λ=0$, we prove a many-body gap-labeling theorem: the Hall conductivity appearing in the macroscopic Ohm's law is constant and quantized, satisfying $2πσ^{\mathrm{H}}\in\mathbb{Z}$. Thus the integer colors of the non-interacting Hofstadter butterfly persist as Hall-conductivity labels of interacting quantum Hall phases.

Tuning the topology of p -wave superconductivity in an analytically solvable two-band model

Haiping Hu, Erhai Zhao, Indubala I. Satija

We introduce and solve a two-band model of spinless fermions with ${p}_{x}$-wave pairing on a square lattice. The model reduces to the well-known extended Harper-Hofstadter model with half-flux quanta per plaquette and weakly coupled Kitaev chains in two respective limits. We show that its phase diagram contains a topologically nontrivial weak pairing phase as well as a trivial strong pairing phase as the ratio of the pairing amplitude and hopping is tuned. Introducing periodic driving to the model, we observe a cascade of Floquet phases with well defined quasienergy gaps and featuring chiral Majorana edge modes at the zero or $\ensuremath{\pi}$ gap or both. Dynamical topological invariants are obtained to characterize each phase and to explain the emergence of edge modes in the anomalous phase where all the quasienergy bands have zero Chern number. The analytical solution is achieved by exploiting a generalized mirror symmetry of the model, so that the effective Hamiltonian is decomposed into that of spin-$1/2$ in magnetic field, and the loop unitary operator becomes spin rotations. We further show the dynamical invariants manifest as the Hopf linking numbers.
