Abstract

The biphoton correlation time, a measure for the conditional uncertainty in the temporal arrival of two photons from a photon pair source, is a key performance identifier for many quantum spectroscopy applications, with shorter correlation times typically yielding better performance. Furthermore, it provides fundamental insight into the effects of dispersion on the biphoton state. Here, we show that a characteristic dependence of the width of the temporal interferogram can be exploited to obtain insights into the amount of second-order dispersion inside the interferometer and to retrieve actual and Fourier-limited ultrashort biphoton correlation times of around 100 fs . In the presented scheme, we simultaneously measure spectral and temporal interferograms at the output of an SU ( 1 , 1 ) interferometer based on an integrated broadband parametric down-conversion source in a Ti:LiNbO 3 waveguide. Probing spectral-temporal correlations with a versatile integrated source of parametric down-conversion states

Vahid Ansari, Benjamin Brecht, Georg Harder +1 more

The spectral-temporal correlation and the correlation time of a biphoton wavepacket generated in the process of parametric down-conversion (PDC), is of great importance for a broad range of quantum experiments. We utilise an integrated PDC source to generate biphotons with different types of spectral-temporal correlations and probe their respective correlation times. The outcomes confirms that the correlation time is independent of the coherence time of the pump light, and it is only determined by the waveguide length and its dispersion properties. Furthermore, we investigate the properties of the PDC biphoton wavepacket exhibiting different types of spectral-temporal correlations and their suitability for quantum-enhanced applications.

Alignment-free dispersion measurement with interfering biphotons

Arash Riazi, Eric Y. Zhu, Changjia Chen +3 more

Measuring the dispersion of photonic devices with small dispersion-length products is challenging due to the phase-sensitive and alignment-intensive nature of conventional methods. In this Letter, we demonstrate a quantum technique to extract the second- and third-order chromatic dispersion of a short single-mode fiber using a fiber-based quantum nonlinear interferometer. The interferometer consists of two cascaded fiber-based biphoton sources, with each source acting as a nonlinear beam splitter. A fiber under test is placed between these two sources and introduces a frequency-dependent phase that is imprinted on the biphoton spectrum (interferogram) at the output of the interferometer. This interferogram contains the dispersion properties of the test fiber. Our technique has three novel features: (1) the broadband nature of the biphoton sources used in our setup allows accurate dispersion measurements on test devices with small dispersion-length products; (2) our all-fiber common-path interferometer requires no beam alignment or phase stabilization; and (3) multiple phase-matching processes supported in our biphoton sources enable dispersion measurements at different wavelengths, which yields the third-order dispersion achieved for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, using a quantum optical technique.

Complete spectral characterization of biphotons by simultaneously determining their frequency sum and difference in a single quantum interferometer

Baihong Li, Changhua Chen, Xiao Xiang +5 more

We propose theoretically a quantum interferometer in which the NOON state interferometer is combined with the Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer. With this interferometer, the temporal interference patterns associated with biphoton frequency sum and difference can be shown in different parts of a single interferogram. It is thus possible to simultaneously obtain the spectral correlation information of biphotons in both frequency sum and difference by taking the Fourier transform from such an interferogram. This provides a method for complete spectral characterization of an arbitrary two-photon state with exchange symmetry and might be useful in quantum Fourier-transform spectroscopy where direct spectral measurement is difficult. Furthermore, as it can realize the measurement of time intervals on three scales at the same time, we expect that it can provide a method in quantum metrology. Finally, we discuss another potential application of such an interferometer in the generation and characterization of high-dimensional and phase-controlled frequency entanglement.

Limitation on two-photon temporal correlation

Dmitry Strekalov, Andrey B. Matsko, Lute Maleki

We show theoretically that two-photon correlation time for a biphoton, a pair of entangled photons generated in the process of parametric down conversion, is limited by the inverse frequency width of the single-photon spectrum, which is limited by the dispersion of the nonlinear material used for the pair generation. The dispersion is determined by the transparency window of the material, which provides the ultimate limitation for the two-photon correlation time. We discuss several experimental approaches enabling realization of such a limiting case.
