Measurement backaction control of quantum dissipation in a nonlinear cavity-based Duffing oscillator

Yueheng Shi, Sacha Greenfield, Arjendu K. Pattanayak

Quantum backaction from weak measurement affects the behavior of quantum systems. We consider a nonlinear driven Duffing oscillator system implementation in a nonlinear optical cavity, and we show that the choice of phase setting $\ensuremath{\phi}$ for a laser used in measurement can change the dissipation for the spread variables of the quantum state. This can considerably increase the energy absorbed via the energy channel of the spread variables and enhance quantum effects. This suggests novel applications to quantum control, as we demonstrate, including an example in which the energy in the spread variables allows for a dynamical tunneling between energetically separated dynamical stead-states.

Dissipative two-level systems under ultrastrong off-resonant driving

A. P. Saǐko, Siarhei A. Markevich, Ryhor Fedaruk

We study the dissipative dynamics of a two-level system under ultrastrong driving when the frequency and strength of the exciting field exceed significantly the transition frequency. We find three qualitatively different regimes of such dynamics: (1) the collapse and revival of oscillations in the population difference, (2) the simple exponential decay of the oscillations resulting in their steady state with the finite amplitude, and (3) the steady-state stabilization of the equally populated levels. The nonmonotonic Bessel-function-like dependence on the driving strength is also predicted for the decay rate of these oscillations. The features of this dependence are determined by the relative rates of energetic relaxation and pure dephasing.

Energetics of an rf SQUID Coupled to Two Thermal Reservoirs

Bartłomiej Gardas, J. Łuczka, Andrzej Ptok +1 more

We study energetics of a Josephson tunnel junction connecting a superconducting loop pierced by an external magnetic flux (an rf SQUID) and coupled to two independent thermal reservoirs of different temperature. In the framework of the theory of quantum dissipative systems, we analyze energy currents in stationary states. The stationary energy flow can be periodically modulated by the external magnetic flux exemplifying the rf SQUID as a quantum heat interferometer. We also consider the transient regime and identify three distinct regimes: monotonic decay, damped oscillations and pulse-type behavior of energy currents. The first two regimes can be controlled by the external magnetic flux while the last regime is robust against its variation.
