Classical conformal blocks, Coulomb gas integrals, and quantum integrable models

Abstract

In this paper, we recall Richardson's solution of the reduced BCS model, its relationship with the Gaudin model, and the known implementation of these models in conformal field theory. The CFT techniques applied here are based on the use of the free field realization, or more precisely, on the calculation of saddle-point values of Coulomb gas integrals representing certain (perturbed) WZW conformal blocks. We identify the saddle-point limit as the classical limit of conformal blocks. We show that this observation implies a new method for calculating classical conformal blocks and can be further used in the study of quantum integrable models.

Classical conformal blocks, Coulomb gas integrals and Richardson-Gaudin models

Marcin Radosław Piątek, R. G. Nazmitdinov, Antonio Puente +1 more

Abstract Virasoro conformal blocks are universal ingredients of correlation functions of two-dimensional conformal field theories (2d CFTs) with Virasoro symmetry. It is acknowledged that in the (classical) limit of large central charge of the Virasoro algebra and large external, and intermediate conformal weights with fixed ratios of these parameters Virasoro blocks exponentiate to functions known as Zamolodchikovs’ classical blocks. The latter are special functions which have awesome mathematical and physical applications. Uniformization, monodromy problems, black holes physics, quantum gravity, entanglement, quantum chaos, holography, $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 2 gauge theory and quantum integrable systems (QIS) are just some of contexts, where classical Virasoro blocks are in use. In this paper, exploiting known connections between power series and integral representations of (quantum) Virasoro blocks, we propose new finite closed formulae for certain multi-point classical Virasoro blocks on the sphere. Indeed, combining classical limit of Virasoro blocks expansions with a saddle point asymptotics of Dotsenko-Fateev (DF) integrals one can relate classical Virasoro blocks with a critical value of the “Dotsenko-Fateev matrix model action”. The latter is the “DF action” evaluated on a solution of saddle point equations which take the form of Bethe equations for certain QIS (Gaudin spin models). A link with integrable models is our main motivation for this research line. For instance, analogous quantities as the “DF on-shell action” appear in 2d CFT realization of the so-called Richardson’s solution of the reduced BCS model describing physics of ultra-small superconducting grains. Precisely, the Richardson solution and its particular limit characterizing the rational Gaudin model have known implementation in 2d CFT in terms of a free field representation of certain (perturbed and unperturbed) WZW blocks. The WZW analogue of the “DF on-shell action” appears here and plays a crucial role, it is a generating function for eigenvalues of quantum integrals of motion. An exploration of relationships between power expansions and Coulomb gas representations of the aforementioned WZW blocks could pave a way for new analytical tools useful in the study of models of the Richardson-Gaudin type.

Conformal Field Theory and the Exact Solution of the BCS Hamiltonian

Sierra, G

We propose a connection between conformal field theory (CFT) and the exact solution and integrability of the reduced BCS model of superconductivity. The relevant CFT is given by the $SU(2)_k$-WZW model in the singular limit when the level k goes to -2. This theory has to be perturbed by an operator proportional to the inverse of the BCS coupling constant. Using the free field realization of this perturbed Wess-Zumino-Witten model, we derive the exact Richardson's wave function and the integrals of motion of the reduced BCS model in the saddle point approximation. The construction is reminiscent of the CFT approach to the Fractional Quantum Hall effect.

From Gaudin Integrable Models to d -Dimensional Multipoint Conformal Blocks

Ilija Burić, Sylvain Lacroix, Jeremy A. Mann +2 more

In this work, we initiate an integrability-based approach to multipoint conformal blocks for higher-dimensional conformal field theories. Our main observation is that conformal blocks for N-point functions may be considered as eigenfunctions of integrable Gaudin Hamiltonians. This provides us with a complete set of differential equations that can be used to evaluate multipoint blocks.

Gaudin models and multipoint conformal blocks: general theory

Ilija Burić, Sylvain Lacroix, Jeremy A. Mann +2 more

Abstract The construction of conformal blocks for the analysis of multipoint correlation functions with N > 4 local field insertions is an important open problem in higher dimensional conformal field theory. This is the first in a series of papers in which we address this challenge, following and extending our short announcement in [1]. According to Dolan and Osborn, conformal blocks can be determined from the set of differential eigenvalue equations that they satisfy. We construct a complete set of commuting differential operators that characterize multipoint conformal blocks for any number N of points in any dimension and for any choice of OPE channel through the relation with Gaudin integrable models we uncovered in [1]. For 5-point conformal blocks, there exist five such operators which are worked out smoothly in the dimension d.
