Abstract

We resolve the unexpected and long-standing disagreement between experiment and theory in the Efimovian three-body spectrum of ^{7}Li, commonly referred to as the lithium few-body puzzle. Our results show that the discrepancy arises out of the presence of strong nonuniversal three-body spin-exchange interactions, which enact an effective inflation of the universal Efimov spectrum. This conclusion is obtained from a thorough numerical solution of the quantum mechanical three-body problem, including precise interatomic interactions and all spin degrees of freedom for three alkali-metal atoms. Our results show excellent agreement with the experimental data regarding both the Efimov spectrum and the absolute rate constants of three-body recombination, and in addition reveal a general product propensity for such triatomic reactions in the Paschen-Back regime, stemming from Wigner's spin conservation rule.

Strong spin-exchange recombination of three weakly interacting Li7 atoms

Jing-Lun Li, T. Secker, P. M. A. Mestrom +1 more

Quantifying the nonuniversal three-body losses in ultracold atomic gases has been a long-standing problem. We go beyond earlier approaches to solve this problem by using a model that includes realistic pairwise interaction potentials and the exact three-atom spin structure. With this model we can successfully explain experimental observations for weakly interacting $^{7}\mathrm{Li}$ and $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms. Capturing the exact spin structure, we are able to reveal a strong three-body spin-exchange recombination mechanism. In addition, we predict a regime of low three-body recombination rate in the $^{7}\mathrm{Li}$ system that is advantageous for a variety of many-body experiments. This work opens avenues to study spin-involved few-body processes in quantum gases.

Accurate Simulation of Efimov Physics in Ultracold Atomic Gases with Realistic Three-Body Multichannel Interactions

J. van de Kraats, S. J. J. M. F. Kokkelmans

Abstract We give a detailed and self-contained description of a recently developed theoretical and numerical method for the simulation of three identical bosonic alkali-metal atoms near a Feshbach resonance, where the Efimov effect is induced. The method is based on a direct construction of the off-shell two-body transition matrix from exact eigenfunctions of the embedded two-body Hamiltonians, obtained using realistic parameterizations of the interaction potentials which accurately reproduce the molecular energy levels. The transition matrix is then inserted into the appropriate three-body integral equations, which may be efficiently solved on a computer. We focus especially on the power of our method in including rigorously the effects of multichannel physics on the three-body problem, which are usually accounted for only by various approximations. We demonstrate the method for 7Li, where we recently showed that a correct inclusion of this multichannel physics resolves the long-standing disagreement between theory and experiment regarding the Efimovian three-body parameter. We analyze the Efimovian enhancement of the three-body recombination rate on both sides of the Feshbach resonance, revealing strong sensitivity to the spin structure of the model thus indicating the prevalence of three-body spin-exchange physics. Finally, we discuss an extension of our methodology to the calculation of three-body bound-state energies.

Origin of the Three-Body Parameter Universality in Efimov Physics

Jia Wang, José Paulo D'Incao, Brett D. Esry +1 more

In recent years extensive theoretical and experimental studies of universal few-body physics have advanced our understanding of universal Efimov physics. Whereas theory had been the driving force behind our understanding of Efimov physics for decades, recent experiments have contributed an unexpected discovery. Specifically, measurements have found that the so-called three-body parameter determining several properties of the system is universal, even though fundamental assumptions in the theory of the Efimov effect suggest that it should be a variable property that depends on the precise details of the short-range two- and three-body interactions. The present Letter resolves this apparent contradiction by elucidating previously unanticipated implications of the two-body interactions. Our study shows that the three-body parameter universality emerges because a universal effective barrier in the three-body potentials prevents the three particles from simultaneously getting close together. Our results also show limitations on this universality, as it is more likely to occur for neutral atoms but less likely to extend to light nuclei.

Universal Efimov Scaling in the Rabi-Coupled Few-Body Spectrum

Anthony N. Zulli, Brendan C. Mulkerin, Meera M. Parish +1 more

We investigate the behavior of the Efimov effect-a universal quantum few-body phenomenon-in the presence of an external driving field. Specifically, we consider up to three bosonic atoms, such as ^{133}Cs, interacting with a light atom, such as ^{6}Li, where the latter has two internal spin states {↑,↓} that are Rabi coupled. Assuming that only the spin-↑ light atom interacts with the bosons, we find that the Rabi drive transposes the entire Efimov spectrum such that the Efimov trimers and tetramers are centered around the Rabi-shifted two-body scattering resonance. Crucially, we show that the Rabi drive preserves the trimers' discrete scaling symmetry, while universally shifting the Efimov three-body parameter, leading to a log-periodic modulation in the spectrum as the Rabi drive is varied. Our results suggest that Efimov physics can be conveniently explored using an applied driving field, opening up the prospect of an externally tunable three-body parameter.

Universality of the Three-Body Parameter for Efimov States in Ultracold Cesium

Martin Berninger, Alessandro Zenesini, Bo Huang +6 more

We report on the observation of triatomic Efimov resonances in an ultracold gas of cesium atoms. Exploiting the wide tunability of interactions resulting from three broad Feshbach resonances in the same spin channel, we measure magnetic-field dependent three-body recombination loss. The positions of the loss resonances yield corresponding values for the three-body parameter, which in universal few-body physics is required to describe three-body phenomena and, in particular, to fix the spectrum of Efimov states. Our observations show a robust universal behavior with a three-body parameter that stays essentially constant.
