Abstract

We propose an experimental scheme to realize non-Abelian dynamical gauge field for ultracold fermions, which induces a novel pairing mechanism of topological superfluidity. The dynamical gauge fields arise from nontrivial interplay effect between the strong Zeeman splitting and Hubbard interaction in a two-dimensional (2D) optical Raman lattice. The spin-flip transitions are forbidden by the large Zeeman detuning, but are restored when the Zeeman splitting is compensated by Hubbard interaction. This scheme allows to generate a dynamical non-Abelian gauge field that leads to a Dirac type correlated 2D spin-orbit interaction depending on local state configurations. The topological superfluid from a novel pairing driven by 2D dynamical gauge fields is reached, with analytic and numerical results being obtained. Our work may open up a door to emulate non-Abelian dynamical gauge fields and correlated topological phases with experimental feasibility.

Non-Abelian dynamical gauge field and topological superfluids in optical Raman lattice

Abstract We propose a novel scheme to realize non-Abelian dynamical gauge field for ultracold fermions, and uncover a new pairing mechanism for topological superfluidity. The dynamical gauge fields arise from a nontrivial compensation effect between the large Zeeman detuning and strong Hubbard interaction in a two-dimensional (2D) optical Raman lattice. The spin-flip transitions are forbidden by the large Zeeman detuning, but restored when the Zeeman splitting is compensated by Hubbard interaction, generating a dynamical non-Abelian gauge field that leads to a correlated 2D spin-orbit interaction depending on local state configurations. The topological superfluid from a novel pairing driven by 2D dynamical gauge fields is reached with high feasibility, showing a broad phase region without competing orders at relevant fillings, and can be easily prepared in experiment. Our work can open up an avenue to emulate non-Abelian dynamical gauge fields and exotic correlated topological phases with feasibility and particularly, paves the way for realizing the non-Abelian topological superfluids.

Repulsive Fermi gases in a two-dimensional lattice with non-Abelian gauge fields

Yi-Xiang Wang, Fuxiang Li

Motivated by the recent experiment realizing bidirectional spin-orbit–coupled Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC), we theoretically explore the properties of repulsive fermions in the two-dimensional (2D) optical lattice with such non-Abelian gauge fields. Within the mean-field level, we find a novel phase of topological antiferromagnetic (TAFM) order which incorporates both the non-trivial topology due to spin-flip hopping and spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) for the in-plane spin order. We argue that the appearance of such a phase is generic for repulsive fermions in Chern bands achieved through spin-orbit coupling. Our work paves the way for further studies of fermionic generalization of 2D non-Abelian spin-orbit–coupled quantum gases.

Spin-orbit Coupling and Topological Phases for Ultracold Atoms

Long Zhang, Xiong-Jun Liu

Cold atoms with laser-induced spin-orbit (SO) interactions provide promising platforms to explore novel quantum physics, in particular the exotic topological phases, beyond natural conditions of solids. The past several years have witnessed important progresses in both theory and experiment in the study of SO coupling and novel quantum states for ultracold atoms. Here we review the physics of the SO coupled quantum gases, focusing on the latest theoretical and experimental progresses of realizing SO couplings beyond one-dimension (1D), and the further investigation of novel topological quantum phases in such systems, including the topological insulating phases and topological superfluids. A pedagogical introduction to the SO coupling for ultracold atoms and topological quantum phases is presented. We show that the so-called optical Raman lattice schemes, which combine the creation of the conventional optical lattice and Raman lattice with topological stability, can provide minimal methods with high experimental feasibility to realize 1D to 3D SO couplings. The optical Raman lattices exhibit novel intrinsic symmetries, which enable the natural realization of topological phases belonging to different symmetry classes, with the topology being detectable through minimal measurement strategies. We introduce how the non-Abelian Majorana modes emerge in the SO coupled superfluid phases which can be topologically nontrivial or trivial, for which a few fundamental theorems are presented and discussed. The experimental schemes for achieving non-Abelian superfluid phases are given. Finally, we point out the future important issues in this rapidly growing research field.

Realization of 2D Spin-Orbit Interaction and Exotic Topological Orders in Cold Atoms

Xiong-Jun Liu, K. T. Law, Tai Kai Ng

A Majorana zero bound mode exists in the vortex core of a chiral $p+ip$ superconductor or superfluid, which can be driven from an $s$-wave pairing state by two-dimensional spin-orbit coupling. We propose here a novel scheme based on realistic cold atom platforms to generate two-dimensional spin-orbit interactions in a blue-detuned square optical lattice, and predict both the quantum anomalous Hall effect and chiral topological superfluid phase in the experimentally accessible parameter regimes. This work may open a new direction with experimental feasibility to observe non-Abelian topological orders in cold atom systems.

Density-dependent gauge field with Raman lattices

Xiang-Can Cheng, Zong-Yao Wang, Jinyi Zhang +2 more

The study of the gauge field is an everlasting topic in modern physics. Spin-orbit coupling is a powerful tool in ultracold atomic systems, resulting in an artificial gauge field that can be easily manipulated and observed in a tabletop environment. Combining optical Raman lattices and atom-atom interactions, the artificial gauge field can be made density dependent. In this work we propose a straightforward way to engineer a one-dimensional density-dependent gauge field in a Bose-Hubbard model in spin-orbit-coupled Raman lattices. We study the model from two perspectives: few-body quantum-walk dynamics and the many-body ground state. From the first perspective, we show that large spin-flipped tunneling can lead to a deep two-body bound state. From the second perspective, mean-field and density-matrix renormalization-group calculations consistently reveal three different phases, i.e., the Mott insulator phase, the superfluid phase, and the magnetic superfluid phase. Finally, we discuss the experimental protocol with Raman lattices based on existing experimental platforms.

Topological superfluids on a square optical lattice with non-Abelian gauge fields: Effects of next-nearest-neighbor hopping in the BCS-BEC evolution

M. Iskin

We consider a two-component Fermi gas with attractive interactions on a square optical lattice, and study the interplay of Zeeman field, spin-orbit coupling, and next-nearest-neighbor hopping on the ground-state phase diagrams in the entire BCS-BEC evolution. In particular, we first classify and distinguish all possible superfluid phases by the momentum-space topology of their zero-energy quasiparticle-quasihole excitations, and then numerically establish a plethora of quantum phase transitions in between. These transitions are further signaled and evidenced by the changes in the corresponding topological invariant of the system, i.e., its Chern number. Lastly, we find that the superfluid phase exhibits a reentrant structure, separated by a fingering normal phase, the origin of which is traced back to the changes in the single-particle density of states.
