Abstract

This work investigates a case study of using physical-based sonification of Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimization (QUBO) problems, optimized by the Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) algorithm. The VQE approximates the solution of the problem by using an iterative loop between the quantum computer and a classical optimization routine. This work explores the intermediary statevectors found in each VQE iteration as the means of sonifying the optimization process itself. The implementation was realised in the form of a musical interface prototype named Variational Quantum Harmonizer (VQH), providing potential design strategies for musical applications, focusing on chords, chord progressions, and arpeggios. The VQH can be used both to enhance data visualization or to create artistic pieces. The methodology is also relevant in terms of how an artist would gain intuition towards achieving a desired musical sound by carefully designing QUBO cost functions. Flexible mapping strategies could supply a broad portfolio of sounds for QUBO and quantum-inspired musical compositions, as demonstrated in a case study composition, 'Dependent Origination' by Peter Thomas and Paulo Itaborai.

Advances in Quantum Computer Music

Eduardo Reck Miranda

This chapter examines the Variational Quantum Harmonizer, a software tool and musical interface that focuses on the problem of sonification of the minimization steps of Variational Quantum Algorithms (VQA), used for simulating properties of quantum systems and optimization problems assisted by quantum hardware. Particularly, it details the sonification of Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimization (QUBO) problems using VQA. A flexible design enables its future applications both as a sonification tool for auditory displays in scientific investigation, and as a hybrid quantum-digital musical instrument for artistic endeavours. In turn, sonification can help researchers understand complex systems better and can serve for the training of quantum physics and quantum computing. The VQH structure, including its software implementation, control mechanisms, and sonification mappings are detailed. Moreover, it guides the design of QUBO cost functions in VQH as a music compositional object. The discussion is extended to the implications of applying quantum-assisted simulation in quantum-computer aided composition and live-coding performances. An artistic output is showcased by the piece \textit{Hexagonal Chambers} (Thomas and Itaboraí, 2023).

Adaptive Quantum Computing for Machine Learning via Variational Quantum Eigensolver Optimization

Jincheng Zhang

Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) has emerged as a prominent hybrid quantum-classical algorithm for near-term quantum computing, particularly in applications like quantum machine learning. However, the performance of VQE is significantly constrained by the limitations of classical optimization methods employed to minimize the expectation value of the Hamiltonian. Traditional VQE approaches often suffer from slow convergence and sensitivity to initial conditions, particularly when dealing with complex, high-dimensional problems encountered in machine learning scenarios. This work introduces a novel adaptive quantum computing framework for VQE optimization, designed to dynamically adjust the quantum circuit parameters during the optimization process. By continuously monitoring the optimization progress and intelligently modifying the parameters, we aim to accelerate convergence and improve the robustness of VQE algorithms for machine learning tasks. The core idea is to shift from a static, fixed-parameter VQE to a dynamic, adaptive one. We explore various adaptive control strategies and demonstrate their potential to significantly reduce the number of iterations required to reach a solution, leading to improved computational efficiency and enabling VQE to tackle more complex machine learning problems within the constraints of current quantum hardware. The research focuses on the theoretical underpinnings and the design principles of this adaptive approach, laying the foundation for future implementations and experimental validation.

A QUBO-QAOA Framework for Rhythmic Generation in Hindustani Music

Sonali Chawla, Urvashi Kumari, Dinesh Rai

Abstract This study presents a quantum-inspired optimization framework for generating rhythmic cycles (taals) in Hindustani classical music via Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimization (QUBO) formulations solved via the Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA). By mapping tabla bols to binary decision variables, musical grammar – including rhythmic anchors like the Sam and Khali – is encoded as penalty terms with a cost Hamiltonian. Comparative benchmarking against classical autoregressive architectures, such as WaveNet and LSTM-RNN, reveals a significant efficiency gap. The proposed framework achieves a 97.8% constraint satisfaction rate using only 12 variational parameters, representing a reduction of 4-6 orders of magnitude in model complexity compared to deep learning baselines. Furthermore, the quantum approach facilitates zero-shot generation, deriving its power from rule-encoding rather than data-intensive training. Energy landscape analysis demonstrates that quantum tunnelling through the mixing operator allows the system to navigate sparse rhythmic manifolds more effectively than classical gradient-descent methods. These results establish a rigorous foundation for quantum-enhanced computational musicology, offering a scalable, interpretable, and parameter-efficient paradigm for the digital preservation and creative evolution of structured oral traditions.

Variational Quantum Eigensolver for Real-World Finance: Scalable Solutions for Dynamic Portfolio Optimization Problems

Irene De León, Danel Arias, Manuel Martín-Cordero +9 more

We present a scalable, hardware-aware methodology for extending the Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) to large, realistic Dynamic Portfolio Optimization (DPO) problems. Building on the scaling strategy from our previous work, where we tailored a VQE workflow to both the DPO formulation and the target QPU, we now put forward two significant advances. The first is the implementation of the Ising Sample-based Quantum Configuration Recovery (ISQR) routine, which improves solution quality in Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimization problems. The second is the use of the VQE Constrained method to decompose the optimization task, enabling us to handle DPO instances with more variables than the available qubits on current hardware. These advances, which are broadly applicable to other optimization problems, allow us to address a portfolio with a size relevant to the financial industry, consisting of up to 38 assets and covering the full Spanish stock index (IBEX 35). Our results, obtained on a real Quantum Processing Unit (IBM Fez), show that this tailored workflow achieves financial performance on par with classical methods while delivering a broader set of high-quality investment strategies, demonstrating a viable path towards obtaining practical advantage from quantum optimization in real financial applications.

Variational Quantum Eigensolver with Constraints (VQEC): Solving Constrained Optimization Problems via VQE

Thinh Viet Le, Vassilis Kekatos

Variational quantum approaches have shown great promise in finding near-optimal solutions to computationally challenging tasks. Nonetheless, enforcing constraints in a disciplined fashion has been largely unexplored. To address this gap, this work proposes a hybrid quantum-classical algorithmic paradigm termed VQEC that extends the celebrated VQE to handle optimization with constraints. As with the standard VQE, the vector of optimization variables is captured by the state of a variational quantum circuit (VQC). To deal with constraints, VQEC optimizes a Lagrangian function classically over both the VQC parameters as well as the dual variables associated with constraints. To comply with the quantum setup, variables are updated via a perturbed primal-dual method leveraging the parameter shift rule. Among a wide gamut of potential applications, we showcase how VQEC can approximately solve quadratically-constrained binary optimization (QCBO) problems, find stochastic binary policies satisfying quadratic constraints on the average and in probability, and solve large-scale linear programs (LP) over the probability simplex. Under an assumption on the error for the VQC to approximate an arbitrary probability mass function (PMF), we provide bounds on the optimality gap attained by a VQC. Numerical tests on a quantum simulator investigate the effect of various parameters and corroborate that VQEC can generate high-quality solutions.
