Abstract

We investigate the quantum phases of bosons in a two-chain-coupled ladder. This bosonic ladder is generally in a biased configuration, meaning that the two chains of the ladder can have dramatically different on-site interactions and potential energies. Adopting the numerical density-matrix renormalization-group method, we analyze the phase transitions in various parameter spaces. We find signatures of both insulating-to-superfluid and superfluid-to-insulating quantum phase transitions as the interchain tunneling is increased. Interestingly, tuning the interaction to some intermediate values, the system can exhibit a reentrant quantum phase transition between insulating and superfluid phases. We show that for infinite interaction bias the model is amenable to analytical treatment, predictions of which concerning the phase boundary are in great agreement with numerical results. We finally clarify some critical parameters which separate the system into regimes with distinct phase-transition behaviors, and we briefly compare typical properties of the biased and unbiased bosonic ladder systems. Our paper enriches Bose-Hubbard physics.

Phase diagram of a bosonic ladder with two coupled chains

Meetu Sethi Luthra, Tapan Mishra, Ramesh V. Pai +1 more

We study a bosonic ladder with two coupled chains using the finite-size density-matrix renormalization group method. We show that in a commensurate bosonic ladder the critical on-site interaction $({U}_{C})$ for the superfluid to Mott insulator transition gets larger as the interchain hopping $({t}_{\ensuremath{\perp}})$ increases. We analyze this quantum phase transition and obtain the phase diagram in the ${t}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}\ensuremath{-}U$ plane. We also consider the asymmetric case where the on-site interactions are different in the two chains and have shown that the system as a whole will not be in the Mott insulator phase unless both the chains have on-site interactions greater than the critical value.

Cluster mean-field study of spinor Bose–Hubbard ladder: Ground-state phase diagram and many-body population dynamics*

Li Zhang, Wenjie Liu, Jiahao Huang +1 more

We present a cluster mean-field study for ground-state phase diagram and many-body dynamics of spin-1 bosons confined in a two-chain Bose–Hubbard ladder (BHL). For unbiased BHL, we find superfluid (SF) phase and integer filling Mott insulator (IntMI) phase. For biased BHL, in addition to the SF and IntMI phases, there appears half-integer filling Mott insulator (HIntMI) phase. The phase transition between the SF and IntMI phases can be first order at a part of phase boundaries, while the phase transition between the SF and HIntMI phases is always second order. By tuning the bias energy, we report on the change of the nature of SF–MI phase transitions. Furthermore, we study the effect of the spin-dependent interaction on the many-body population dynamics. The spin-dependent interaction can lead to rich dynamical behaviors, but does not influence the particle transfer efficiency. Our results indicate a way to tune the nature of the SF–MI phase transition and open a new avenue to study the many-body dynamics of spinor bosons in optical lattices.

Quantum phases of constrained bosons on a two-leg Bose-Hubbard ladder

Ashirbad Padhan, Rajashri Parida, Sayan Lahiri +2 more

Bosons in periodic potentials with very strong local interactions, known as constrained bosons, often exhibit interesting physical behavior. We investigate the ground-state properties of a two-leg Bose-Hubbard ladder by imposing a three-body constraint in one leg and a hard-core constraint in the other. By using the cluster mean-field theory approximation and the density matrix renormalization group method, we show that at unit filling, for strong two-body attraction among the three-body constrained bosons, the system becomes a gapped pair-Mott insulator where all the bosons form strong bound pairs and occupy the leg with the three-body constraint. With increase in hopping strength, this pair-Mott insulator phase undergoes a phase transition to the gapless superfluid phase for equal leg and rung hopping strengths. However, when the rung hopping is stronger compared to the leg hopping, we obtain a crossover to another gapped phase which is called the rung-Mott insulator phase where the bosons prefer to delocalize on the rungs rather than the legs. By moving away from unit filling, the system remains in the superfluid phase except for a small region below the gapped phase where a pair superfluid phase is stabilized in the regime of strong attractive interaction. We further extend our studies by considering the three-body constraint in both the legs and find that the crossover from the gapped to gapped phase does not occur; rather, the system undergoes a transition from a pair-rung-Mott insulator phase to the superfluid phase at unit filling. Moreover, in this case, we find the signature of the pair superfluid phase on either side of this gapped phase.

Quantum phases of attractive bosons on a Bose-Hubbard ladder with three-body constraint

Manpreet Singh, Tapan Mishra, Ramesh V. Pai +1 more

We obtain the complete quantum phase diagram of bosons on a two-leg ladder in the presence of attractive onsite and repulsive interchain nearest-neighbor interactions by imposing the onsite three-body constraint. We find three distinct phases; namely, the atomic superfluid (ASF), dimer superfluid (DSF), and the dimer rung insulator (DRI). In the absence of the interchain nearest-neighbor repulsion, the system exhibits a transition from the ASF to the DSF phase with increasing onsite attraction. However, the presence of the interchain nearest-neighbor repulsion stabilizes a gapped DRI phase, which is flanked by the DSF phase. We also obtain the phase diagram of the system for different values of the interchain nearest-neighbor interaction. By evaluating different order parameters, we obtain the complete phase diagram and the properties of the phase transitions using the self-consistent cluster mean-field theory.

Cluster Gutzwiller study of the Bose-Hubbard ladder: Ground-state phase diagram and many-body Landau-Zener dynamics

Haiming Deng, Hui Dai, Jiahao Huang +5 more

We present a cluster Gutzwiller mean-field study for ground states and time-evolution dynamics in the Bose-Hubbard ladder (BHL), which can be realized by loading Bose atoms in double-well optical lattices. In our cluster mean-field approach, we treat each double-well unit of two lattice sites as a coherent whole for composing the cluster Gutzwiller ansatz, which may remain some residual correlations in each two-site unit. For an unbiased BHL, in addition to conventional superfluid phase and integer Mott insulator phases, we find that there are exotic fractional insulator phases if the interchain tunneling is much stronger than the intrachain one. The fractional insulator phases cannot be found by using a conventional mean-field treatment based upon the single-site Gutzwiller ansatz. For a biased BHL, we find there appear single-atom tunneling and interaction blockade if the system is dominated by the interplay between the on-site interaction and the interchain bias. In the many-body Landau-Zener process, in which the interchain bias is linearly swept from negative to positive or vice versa, our numerical results are qualitatively consistent with the experimental observation [Nat. Phys. 7, 61 (2011)]. Our cluster bosonic Gutzwiller treatment is of promising perspectives in exploring exotic quantum phases and time-evolution dynamics of bosonic particles in superlattices.

Mott transition in a two-leg Bose-Hubbard ladder under an artificial magnetic field

Ahmet Keleş, Mehmet Özgür Oktel

We consider the Bose-Hubbard model on a two-leg ladder under an artificial magnetic field and investigate the superfluid--to--Mott insulator transition in this setting. Recently, this system has been experimentally realized [M. Atala et al., Nature Phys. 10, 588 (2014)], albeit in a parameter regime that is far from the Mott transition boundary. Depending on the strength of the magnetic field, the single-particle spectrum has either a single ground state or two degenerate ground states. The transition between these two phases is reflected in the many-particle properties. We first investigate these phases through the Bogoliubov approximation in the superfluid regime and calculate the transition boundary for weak interactions. For stronger interactions the system is expected to form a Mott insulator. We calculate the Mott transition boundary as a function of the magnetic field and interleg coupling with mean-field theory, strong-coupling expansion, and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG). Finally, using the DMRG, we investigate the particle-hole excitation gaps of this system at different filling factors and find peaks at simple fractions, indicating the possibility of correlated phases.
