Abstract

Starting from Halperin multilayer systems we develop a hierarchical scheme, dubbed symmetrized multicluster construction, that generates bosonic and fermionic single-layer quantum Hall states (or vacua) of arbitrary filling factor. Our scheme allows for the insertion of quasiparticle excitations with either Abelian or non-Abelian statistics and quantum numbers that depend on the nature of the original vacuum. Most importantly, it reveals a fusion mechanism for quasielectrons and magnetoexcitons that generalizes ideas about particle fractionalization introduced in A. Bochniak, Z. Nussinov, A. Seidel, and G. Ortiz, Commun. Phys. 5, 171 (2022) for the case of Laughlin fluids. In addition, in the second quantization representation, we uncover the inherent topological quantum order (or the off-diagonal long-range order) characterizing these vacua. In particular, we illustrate the methodology by constructing generalized composite (generalized Read) operators for the non-Abelian Pfaffian and Hafnian quantum fluid states.

Mechanism for particle fractionalization and universal edge physics in quantum Hall fluids

Arkadiusz Bochniak, Zohar Nussinov, Alexander Seidel +1 more

Abstract Advancing a microscopic framework that rigorously unveils the underlying topological hallmarks of fractional quantum Hall (FQH) fluids is a prerequisite for making progress in the classification of strongly-coupled topological matter. We present a second-quantization framework that reveals an exact fusion mechanism for particle fractionalization in FQH fluids, and uncovers the fundamental structure behind the condensation of non-local operators characterizing topological order in the lowest-Landau-level. We show the first exact analytic computation of the quasielectron Berry connections leading to its fractional charge and exchange statistics, and perform Monte Carlo simulations that numerically confirm the fusion mechanism for quasiparticles. We express the sequence of (bosonic and fermionic) Laughlin second-quantized states, highlighting the lack of local condensation, and present a rigorous constructive subspace bosonization dictionary for the bulk fluid. Finally, we establish universal long-distance behavior of edge excitations by formulating a conjecture based on the DNA, or root state, of the FQH fluid.

Unveiling Topological Fusion in Quantum Hall Systems from Microscopic Principles

Arkadiusz Bochniak, Shinsei Ryu, Jürgen Fuchs +1 more

Establishing the fusion rules of anyonic quasiparticles in fractional quantum Hall fluids is essential for understanding their underlying topological order. Building on the conjecture that key topological properties are encoded in the ''DNA'' of candidate many-body wave functions - that is, the pattern of dominant orbital occupations restricted to a finite number of lowest Landau levels - we propose a combinatorial framework that derives these fusion rules directly from microscopic data. By extending Schrieffer's counting argument and introducing classes of topological excitations, our framework provides a unified route to the fusion rules for both Abelian and non-Abelian excitations. This approach elucidates the emergence of topological features from first principles in both fermionic and bosonic systems. In particular, we unveil the previously unknown fusion rules of the Hafnian fluid.

Non-Abelian fermionization and the landscape of quantum Hall phases

Hart Goldman, Ramanjit Sohal, Eduardo Fradkin

The recent proposal of non-Abelian boson-fermion dualities in $2+1$ dimensions, which morally relate $U{(k)}_{N}$ to $SU{(N)}_{\ensuremath{-}k}$ Chern-Simons-matter theories, presents a new platform for exploring the landscape of non-Abelian quantum Hall states accessible from theories of Abelian composite particles. Here we focus on dualities relating theories of Abelian quantum Hall states of bosons or fermions to theories of non-Abelian ``composite fermions'' partially filling Landau levels. We show that these dualities predict special filling fractions where both Abelian and non-Abelian composite fermion theories appear capable of hosting distinct topologically ordered ground states, one Abelian and the other a non-Abelian, $U{(k)}_{2}$ Blok-Wen state. Rather than being in conflict with the duality, we argue that these results indicate unexpected dynamics in which the infrared and lowest Landau level limits fail to commute across the duality. In such a scenario, the non-Abelian topological order can be destabilized in favor of the Abelian ground state, suggesting the presence of a phase transition between the Abelian and non-Abelian states that is likely to be first order. We also generalize these constructions to other non-Abelian fermion-fermion dualities, in the process obtaining new derivations of a variety of paired composite fermion phases using duality, including the anti-Pfaffian state. Finally, we describe how, in multilayer constructions, excitonic pairing of the composite fermions across $N$ layers can also generate the family of Blok-Wen states with $U{(k)}_{2}$ topological order.

Exact Operator Fractionalization and Edge Physics in the Lowest-Landau-Level

Arkadiusz Bochniak, Zohar Nussinov, Alexander Seidel +1 more

Advancing a microscopic field-theoretic framework that rigorously unveils the underlying topological hallmarks of fractional quantum Hall fluids is a prerequisite for making progress in the classification of strongly-coupled topological matter. Here we expand on such a program and, in particular, address the problems of Laughlin's quasiparticle(hole) operator fractionalization and condensation of non-local operators characterizing topological order in the lowest-Landau-level (LLL). We express the sequence of (both bosonic and fermionic) Laughlin second-quantized states in a manner that highlights the lack of local condensation. In addition, we present a rigorous constructive subspace bosonization dictionary for the bulk fluid and establish the universal long-distance behavior of edge excitations by formulating a conjecture complementary to Wen's.

Quantum Hall hierarchy from coupled wires

Yohei Fuji, Akira Furusaki

The coupled-wire construction provides a useful way to obtain microscopic Hamiltonians for various two-dimensional topological phases, among which fractional quantum Hall states are paradigmatic examples. Using the recently introduced flux attachment and vortex duality transformations for coupled wires, we show that this construction is remarkably versatile to encapsulate phenomenologies of hierarchical quantum Hall states: the Jain-type hierarchy states of composite fermions filling Landau levels and the Haldane-Halperin hierarchy states of quasiparticle condensation. The particle-hole conjugate transformation for coupled-wire models is also given as a special case of the hierarchy construction. We also propose coupled-wire models for the composite Fermi liquid, which turn out to be compatible with a sort of the particle-hole symmetry implemented in a nonlocal way at $\ensuremath{\nu}=\frac{1}{2}$. Furthermore, our approach shows explicitly the connection between the Moore-Read Pfaffian state and a chiral $p$-wave pairing of the composite fermions. This composite-fermion picture is also generalized to a family of the Pfaffian state, including the anti-Pfaffian state and Bonderson-Slingerland hierarchy states.

Paired parton quantum Hall states: A coupled wire construction

Alexander Sirota, Sharmistha Sahoo, Gil Young Cho +1 more

The Pfaffian fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states are incompressible non-Abelian topological fluids present in a half-filled electron Landau level, where there is a balanced population of electrons and holes. They give rise to half-integral quantum Hall plateaus that divide critical transitions between integer quantum Hall (IQH) states. On the other hand, there are Abelian FQH states, such as the Laughlin state, that can be understood using partons, which are fermionic divisions of the electron. In this paper, we propose a family of incompressible paired parton FQH states at filling $\ensuremath{\nu}=\frac{1}{6}$ (modulo 1) that emerge from critical transitions between IQH states and Abelian FQH states at filling $\ensuremath{\nu}=\frac{1}{3}$ (modulo 1). These paired parton states are originated from a half-filled parton Landau level, where there is an equal amount of partons and holes. They generically support Ising-type anyonic quasiparticle excitations and carry non-Abelian Pfaffian topological orders (TO) for partons. We prove the principal existence of these paired parton states using exactly solvable interacting arrays of electronic wires under a magnetic field. Moreover, we establish a notion of particle-hole (PH) symmetry for partons and relate the PH symmetric parton Pfaffian TO with the gapped symmetric surface TO of a fractional topological insulator in three dimensions.
