Proof of absence of local conserved quantities in the mixed-field Ising chain

Abstract

Absence of local conserved quantities is often required, such as for thermalization or for the validity of response theory. Although many studies have discussed whether thermalization occurs in the Ising chain with longitudinal and transverse fields, rigorous results on local conserved quantities of this model have still been lacking. Here, we rigorously prove that, if all coupling constants are nonzero, this model has no conserved quantity spanned by local operators with support size up to half of the system size other than a trivial one, i.e., a linear combination of the Hamiltonian and the identity. The proof is given not only for the periodic boundary condition but also for the open boundary condition. We also discuss relation to the integrability of the model where the longitudinal field is set to zero. Our results provide the second example of spin models whose nonintegrability is rigorously proved.

Proof of the absence of local conserved quantities in the XYZ chain with a magnetic field

Naoto Shiraishi

We rigorously prove that the spin-(1/2) XYZ chain with a magnetic field has no local conserved quantity. Any nontrivial conserved quantity of this model is shown to be a sum of operators supported by contiguous sites with at least half of the entire system. We establish that the absence of local conserved quantity in concrete models is provable in a rigorous form.

Proof of the absence of local conserved quantities in the Holstein model

Fuga Ishii, Mizuki Sanatani

Absence of local conserved quantities, or nonintegrability, is often assumed when discussing various phenomena in quantum many-body systems, such as thermalization and transport. However, no concrete proof of this property is known in electron--phonon coupled systems, a typical setting for condensed matter physics. In this paper, we show that the one-dimensional Holstein model has no nontrivial local conserved quantities other than the Hamiltonian itself and the total fermion number operator. We further show that the absence of nontrivial local conserved quantities also holds for the more general Holstein--Hubbard model. We also establish the absence of nontrivial local conserved quantities in these models on higher-dimensional hypercubic lattices. Our result has accomplished an advance in nonintegrability proofs by expanding their scope to systems in which particles with different statistical properties are mixed.

Proof of absence of local conserved quantities in two- and higher-dimensional quantum Ising models

Yuuya Chiba

Local conserved quantities are key to understanding macroscopic phenomena, and their absence indicates quantum nonintegrability. Here, the author rigorously proves that quantum Ising models on two- and higher-dimensional lattices possess no local conserved quantities. The proof holds for arbitrary parameter values, thereby theoretically confirming that there are no integrable systems other than the trivial case. Their result establishes this widely studied model as a definitive example of a nonintegrable quantum many-body system.

Rigorous Test for Quantum Integrability and Nonintegrability

Akihiro Hokkyo

The integrability of a quantum many-body system, which is characterized by the presence or absence of local conserved quantities, drastically impacts the dynamics of isolated systems, including thermalization. Nevertheless, a rigorous and comprehensive method for determining integrability or nonintegrability has remained elusive. In this paper, we address this challenge by introducing rigorously provable tests for integrability and nonintegrability of quantum spin systems with finite-range interactions. Our results significantly simplify existing proofs of nonintegrability, such as those for the $S=1/2$ Heisenberg chain with nearest-and next-nearest-neighbor interactions, the $S=1$ bilinear-biquadratic chain and the $S=1/2$ XYZ model in two or higher dimensions. Moreover, our results also yield the first proof of nonintegrability for models such as the $S=1/2$ Heisenberg chain with a non-uniform magnetic field, the $S=1/2$ XYZ model on the triangular lattice, and the general spin XYZ model. This work also offers a partial resolution to the long-standing conjecture that integrability is governed by the existence of local conserved quantities with small support. Our framework ensures that the nonintegrability of one-dimensional spin systems with translational symmetry can be verified algorithmically, independently of system size.

Local conservation laws in spin- 1 2 XY chains with open boundary conditions

Maurizio Fagotti

Abstract We revisit the conserved quantities of the spin- 1 2 XY model with open boundary conditions. In the absence of a transverse field, we find new families of local charges and show that half of the seeming conservation laws are conserved only if the number of sites is odd. In even chains the set of noninteracting charges is abelian, like in the periodic case when the number of sites is odd. In odd chains the set is doubled and becomes non-abelian, like in even periodic chains. The dependence of the charges on the parity of the chain’s size undermines the common belief that the thermodynamic limit of diagonal ensembles exists. We consider also the transverse-field Ising chain, where the situation is more ordinary. The generalization to the XY model in a transverse field is not straightforward and we propose a general framework to carry out similar calculations. We conjecture the form of the bulk part of the local charges and discuss the emergence of quasilocal conserved quantities. We provide evidence that in a region of the parameter space there is a reduction of the number of quasilocal conservation laws invariant under chain inversion. As a by-product, we study a class of block-Toeplitz-plus-Hankel operators and identify the conditions that their symbols satisfy in order to commute with a given block-Toeplitz.

Proof of the absence of local conserved quantities in general spin- 1 2 chains with symmetric nearest-neighbor interaction

Mizuki Sanatani, Yuuya Chiba, Naoto Shiraishi

We provide a rigorous proof of the absence of nontrivial local conserved quantities in all spin-1/2 chains with symmetric nearest-neighbor interaction, except for known integrable systems. This result shows that there are no further integrable system that awaits to be discovered. Our finding also implies that there is no intermediate systems with a finite number of nontrivial local conserved quantities. In addition, we clarify all short-support conserved quantities in non-integrable systems, which we need to take into account in analyses of thermalization and level statistics.
