Abstract

We study the statistics of matrix elements of local operators in the basis of energy eigenstates in a paradigmatic, integrable, many-particle quantum theory, the Lieb-Liniger model of bosons with repulsive delta-function interactions. Using methods of quantum integrability, we determine the scaling of matrix elements with system size. As a consequence of the extensive number of conservation laws, the structure of matrix elements is fundamentally different from, and much more intricate than, the predictions of the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis for generic models. We uncover an interesting connection between this structure for local operators in interacting integrable models and the one for local operators that are not local with respect to the elementary excitations in free theories. We find that typical off-diagonal matrix elements ⟨ μ | O | λ ⟩ in the same macrostate scale as exp ( − c O L ln ( L ) − L M μ , λ O ) , where the probability distribution function for M μ , λ O is well described by Fréchet distributions and c O depends only on macrostate information. In contrast, typical off-diagonal matrix elements between two different macrostates scale as exp ( − d O L 2 ) , where d O depends only on macrostate information. Diagonal matrix elements depend only on macrostate information up to finite-size corrections. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Eigenstate thermalization hypothesis for off-diagonal matrix elements in integrable spin chains

Federico Rottoli, Vincenzo Alba

We investigate off-diagonal matrix elements of local operators in integrable spin chains, focusing on the isotropic spin- 1 / 2 Heisenberg chain ( X X X chain). We employ state-of-the-art algebraic Bethe ansatz results, which allow us to efficiently compute matrix elements of operators with support up to two sites between generic energy eigenstates. We consider both matrix elements between eigenstates that are in the same thermodynamic macrostate, as well as eigenstates that belong to different macrostates. In the former case, focusing on thermal states we numerically show that matrix elements are compatible with the exponential decay as exp ( − L | M i j O | ) . The probability distribution functions of M i j O depend on the observable and on the macrostate, and are well described by Gumbel distributions. On the other hand, matrix elements between eigenstates in different macrostates decay faster as exp ( − | M ′ i j O | L 2 ) , with M ′ i j O , again, compatible with a Gumbel distribution.

Statistics of Matrix Elements of Operators in a Disorder-Free SYK model

Tingfei Li, Shuanghong Li

Recently, studies have explored the statistics of matrix elements of local operators in the Lieb-Liniger model. It was found that the probability distribution function for off-diagonal matrix elements $\langle \boldsymbolμ|\mathcal{O}|\boldsymbolλ \rangle$ within the same macro-state is well described by the Fréchet distributions. This represents a significant development for the Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis (ETH). In this paper, we investigate a similar phenomenon in another solvable model: the disorder-free Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. The Hamiltonian of this model consists of 4-body interactions of Majorana fermions. Unlike the conventional SYK model, the coupling strengths in this model are fixed to a constant, earning it the name ``disorder-free.'' We evaluate the matrix elements of operators constructed from products of $n$ Majorana fermions: $\mathcal{O} = χ_{a_1}χ_{a_2}\ldots χ_{a_n}$. For a general choice of indices and $n \geq 4$, we find that the statistics of the off-diagonal matrix elements are well-fitted by a generalized inverse Gaussian distribution rather than Fréchet distributions.

Multiscale Structure of Eigenstate Thermalization

Pavel Orlov, Rustem Sharipov, Enej Ilievski

The eigenstate thermalization hypothesis provides a framework for understanding thermalization in isolated quantum many-body systems by characterizing statistical properties of local observables in energy eigenstates. Here we demonstrate that distributions of matrix elements in macroscopic systems may depend not only on the macrostate parameters, such as the densities of local conserved charges, but generally also on the properties of ensembles used in sampling eigenstates. To this end, we depart from the conventional analysis of microcanonical windows and consider statistical ensembles with an adjustable scale parameter prescribing the magnitude of charge fluctuations. We specifically consider an integrable field theory that permits efficient numerical sampling of matrix elements and reliable extrapolation to the thermodynamic limit. Moreover, in this system, we identify a class of states that enables explicit closed-form computation of the suppression rate of matrix elements. Our findings reveal an underlying multiscale structure of matrix elements captured by a non-analytic fluctuation-scale dependence of algebraic exponents governing their statistical properties.

Off-diagonal matrix elements of local operators in many-body quantum systems

Wouter Beugeling, Roderich Moessner, Masudul Haque

In the time evolution of isolated quantum systems out of equilibrium, local observables generally relax to a long-time asymptotic value, governed by the expectation values (diagonal matrix elements) of the corresponding operator in the eigenstates of the system. The temporal fluctuations around this value, response to further perturbations, and the relaxation toward this asymptotic value are all determined by the off-diagonal matrix elements. Motivated by this nonequilibrium role, we present generic statistical properties of off-diagonal matrix elements of local observables in two families of interacting many-body systems with local interactions. Since integrability (or lack thereof) is an important ingredient in the relaxation process, we analyze models that can be continuously tuned to integrability. We show that, for generic nonintegrable systems, the distribution of off-diagonal matrix elements is a Gaussian centered at zero. As one approaches integrability, the peak around zero becomes sharper, so the distribution is approximately a combination of two Gaussians. We characterize the proximity to integrability through the deviation of this distribution from a Gaussian shape. We also determine the scaling dependence on system size of the average magnitude of off-diagonal matrix elements.

Probing off-diagonal eigenstate thermalization with tensor networks

Maxine Luo, Rahul Trivedi, Mari Carmen Bañuls +1 more

Energy filter methods in combination with quantum simulation can efficiently access the properties of quantum many-body systems at finite energy densities [S. Lu , ]. Classically simulating this algorithm with tensor networks can be used to investigate the microcanonical properties of large spin chains, as recently shown by Y. Yang []. Here we extend this strategy to explore the properties of off-diagonal matrix elements of observables in the energy eigenbasis, fundamentally connected to the thermalization behavior and the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis. We test the method on integrable and nonintegrable spin chains of up to 60 sites, much larger than accessible with exact diagonalization. Our results allow us to explore the scaling of the off-diagonal functions with the size and energy difference, and to establish quantitative differences between integrable and nonintegrable cases. Eigenstate Correlations, the Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis, and Quantum Information Dynamics in Chaotic Many-Body Quantum Systems

Dominik Hahn, David J. Luitz, J. T. Chalker

We consider the statistical properties of eigenstates of the time-evolution operator in chaotic many-body quantum systems. Our focus is on correlations between eigenstates that are specific to spatially extended systems and that characterize entanglement dynamics and operator spreading. In order to isolate these aspects of dynamics from those arising as a result of local conservation laws, we consider Floquet systems in which there are no conserved densities. The correlations associated with scrambling of quantum information lie outside the standard framework established by the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH). In particular, ETH provides a statistical description of matrix elements of local operators between pairs of eigenstates, whereas the aspects of dynamics we are concerned with arise from correlations among sets of four or more eigenstates. We establish the simplest correlation function that captures these correlations and discuss features of its behavior that are expected to be universal at long distances and low energies. We also propose a maximum-entropy ansatz for the joint distribution of a small number n of eigenstates. In the case n = 2 , this ansatz reproduces ETH. For n = 4 it captures both the growth with time of entanglement between subsystems, as characterized by the purity of the time-evolution operator, and also operator spreading, as characterized by the behavior of the out-of-time-order correlator. We test these ideas by comparing results from Monte Carlo sampling of our ansatz with exact diagonalization studies of Floquet quantum circuits. Published by the American Physical Society 2024
