Abstract

Magnetic excitations in the spin chain candidate ${\mathrm{Sr}}_{2}{\mathrm{V}}_{3}{\mathrm{O}}_{9}$ have been investigated by inelastic neutron scattering on a single crystal sample. A spinon continuum with a bandwidth of $\ensuremath{\sim}22$ meV is observed along the chain formed by alternating magnetic ${\mathrm{V}}^{4+}$ and nonmagnetic ${\mathrm{V}}^{5+}$ ions, which reveals the importance of the orbital degree of freedom in determining the chain axis as identified by prior electronic structure calculations. Incipient magnetic Bragg peaks due to weak ferromagnetic interchain couplings emerge when approaching the magnetic transition at ${T}_{N}\ensuremath{\sim}5.3$ K, while the excitations remain gapless within the instrumental resolution. Comparisons to the Bethe ansatz, density matrix renormalization group calculations, and effective field theories confirm ${\mathrm{Sr}}_{2}{\mathrm{V}}_{3}{\mathrm{O}}_{9}$ as a host of weakly coupled $S=1/2$ chains dominated by antiferromagnetic intrachain interactions of $\ensuremath{\sim}7.1$(1) meV.

Line-shape predictions via Bethe ansatz for the one-dimensional spin- 12 Heisenberg antiferromagnet in a magnetic field

Michael Karbach, Gerhard H. Muller

The spin fluctuations parallel to the external magnetic field in the ground state of the one-dimensional (1D) $s=\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet are dominated by a two-parameter set of collective excitations. In a cyclic chain of N sites and magnetization $0<{M}_{z}<N/2,$ the ground state, which contains ${2M}_{z}$ spinons, is reconfigured as the physical vacuum for a different species of quasiparticles, identifiable in the framework of the coordinate Bethe ansatz by characteristic configurations of Bethe quantum numbers. The dynamically dominant excitations are found to be scattering states of two such quasiparticles. For $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{N}\ensuremath{\infty},$ these collective excitations form a continuum in $(q,\ensuremath{\omega})$ space with an incommensurate soft mode. Their matrix elements in the dynamic spin structure factor ${S}_{\mathrm{zz}}(q,\ensuremath{\omega})$ are calculated directly from the Bethe wave functions for finite N. The resulting line- shape predictions for $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{N}\ensuremath{\infty}$ complement the exact results previously derived via algebraic analysis for the exact two-spinon part of ${S}_{\mathrm{zz}}(q,\ensuremath{\omega})$ in the zero-field limit. They are relevant for neutron-scattering experiments on quasi-1D antiferromagnetic compounds in a strong magnetic field.

Neutron Scattering Studies of Excitations in Spin Chains

E. Hirtenlechner

Many phenomena in magnetism can be described using classical models, yet magnetism is a quantum mechanical effect. In addition to thermal fluctuations, quantum fluctuations arise due to the quantum uncertainty of the ground state. These fluctuations are enhanced by low dimensionality and low spin. Spin chains show interesting excitations associated with quasiparticles. Model materials for spin chains can be realized in compounds where the interchain interactions are weak enough. This thesis presents neutron scattering studies of two model materials for spin chains with different spin symmetry. The spin2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain CuSO4*5D2O has a main exchange of J ∼ 3 K, which permits to study its excitation spectrum up to temperatures of ten times the exchange. The spin2 Heisenberg magnet has been studied widely both theoretically and experimentally. The excitation spectrum of the spin2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet consists of quasiparticles called spinons, and calculations for it exist for T = 0 and as a function of temperature. A quantitative comparison between experimental data and theoretical models across a range of temperatures is presented. The excitation spectrum of CuSO4*5D2O is excellently described by the excitation spectrum of a spin2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain at finite temperatures. Energy-temperature scaling is observed at temperatures up to 2J . For these temperatures the Luttinger liquid description of the spin2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain is valid. A spinon continuum is confirmed at all measured temperatures. Therefore, even at ten times the main exchange (T ≈ 10 J), CuSO4*5D2O shows the behavior of a quantum magnet, and not of a classical system at infinite temperatures, for which one would expect single spin flips. The Ising chain is one of the most studied models in magnetism, one model compound for it is RbCoCl3. Optical spectroscopy measurements suggest a lower gap than for similar compounds, which makes it better suited for high resolution neutron spectroscopy. Magnetic correlations along the chains arise in RbCoCl3 below 80 K. A gapped continuum is observed, which arises from isolated antiferromagnetic Ising chains. Below the first magnetic ordering temperature TN1 ≈ 28 K bound states are observed, which arise due to correlations which form between the chains. Strong diffuse scattering leads to the conclusion that disorder is still present. At the second magnetic ordering transition, at TN2 ≈ 14 K, the bound states split as the correlations between the chains change. Fits indicate that the correlations change continuously as a function of temperature. Above TN2 the excitation spectrum of RbCoCl3 can be described by a spin1 2 Ising chain with an XY-component which is treated as a perturbation. Below TN2 the main features are reproduced correctly, but deviations from the details indicate that additional terms in the Hamiltonian may be necessary. Magnetic excitations of the Cu2+ quantum spin chain in Sr3CuPtO6

J. Leiner, Joosung Oh, Alexander I. Kolesnikov +10 more

We report the magnetic excitation spectrum as measured by inelastic neutron scattering for a polycrystalline sample of ${\mathrm{Sr}}_{3}{\mathrm{CuPtO}}_{6}$. Modeling the data by the 2+4 spinon contributions to the dynamical susceptibility within the chains, and with interchain coupling treated in the random phase approximation, accounts for the major features of the powder-averaged structure factor. The magnetic excitations broaden considerably as temperature is raised, persisting up to above 100 K and displaying a broad transition as previously seen in the susceptibility data. No spin gap is observed in the dispersive spin excitations at low momentum transfer, which is consistent with the gapless spinon continuum expected from the coordinate Bethe ansatz. However, the temperature dependence of the excitation spectrum gives evidence of some very weak interchain coupling.

Fractional and composite excitations of antiferromagnetic quantum spin trimer chains

Jun-Qing Cheng, Jun Li, Zijian Xiong +3 more

Abstract Using quantum Monte Carlo, exact diagonalization, and perturbation theory, we study the spectrum of the S = 1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg trimer chain by varying the ratio g = J2/J1 of the intertrimer and intratrimer coupling strengths. The doublet ground states of trimers form effective interacting S = 1/2 degrees of freedom described by a Heisenberg chain. Therefore, the conventional two-spinon continuum of width ∝ J1 when g = 1 evolves into to a similar continuum of width ∝ J2 when g → 0. The intermediate-energy and high-energy modes are termed doublons and quartons which fractionalize with increasing g to form the conventional spinon continuum. In particular, at g ≈ 0.716, the gap between the low-energy spinon branch and the high-energy band with mixed doublons, quartons, and spinons closes. These features should be observable in inelastic neutron scattering experiments if a quasi-one-dimensional quantum magnet with the linear trimer structure and J2 < J1 can be identified. Our results may open a window for exploring the high-energy fractional excitations.

Consequences of critical interchain couplings and anisotropy on a Haldane chain

Anup Kumar Bera, B. Lake, A. T. M. N. Islam +6 more

Effects of interchain couplings and anisotropy on a Haldane chain have been investigated by single-crystal inelastic neutron scattering and density functional theory (DFT) calculations on the model compound ${\mathrm{SrNi}}_{2}{\mathrm{V}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{8}$. Significant effects on low-energy excitation spectra are found where the Haldane gap (${\ensuremath{\Delta}}_{0}\ensuremath{\approx}0.41J$, where $J$ is the intrachain exchange interaction) is replaced by three energy minima at different antiferromagnetic zone centers due to the complex interchain couplings. Further, the triplet states are split into two branches by single-ion anisotropy. Quantitative information on the intrachain and interchain interactions as well as on the single-ion anisotropy is obtained from the analyses of the neutron scattering spectra by the random-phase approximation method. The presence of multiple competing interchain interactions is found from the analysis of the experimental spectra and is also confirmed by the DFT calculations. The interchain interactions are two orders of magnitude weaker than the nearest-neighbor intrachain interaction $J=8.7$ meV. The DFT calculations reveal that the dominant intrachain nearest-neighbor interaction occurs via nontrivial extended superexchange pathways Ni-O-V-O-Ni involving the empty $d$ orbital of V ions. The present single-crystal study also allows us to correctly position ${\mathrm{SrNi}}_{2}{\mathrm{V}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{8}$ in the theoretical $D\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}$ phase diagram [T. Sakai and M. Takahashi, Phys. Rev. B 42, 4537 (1990)], showing where it lies within the spin-liquid phase.

Spin dynamics in the $S=1/2$ weakly-coupled chains antiferromagnet BaCu$_2$Si$_2$O$_7$

A. Zheludev, M. Kenzelmann, S. Raymond +3 more

Inelastic neutron scattering is used to identify single-particle and continuum spin excitations in the quasi-one-dimensional $S=1/2$ antiferromagnet \ba. In the data analysis, close attention is given to resolution effects. A gap in the continuum spectrum at $Δ_c=4.74.8$ meV is directly observed. The gap energy is in excellent agreement with existing theoretical predictions. Below the gap, the spectrum is dominated by sharp accoustic spin wave excitations.
