Abstract

We describe simulations of the quantum dynamics of a confocal cavity QED system that realizes an intrinsically driven-dissipative spin glass.A close connection between open quantum dynamics and replica symmetry breaking is established, in which individual quantum trajectories are the replicas. We observe that entanglement plays an important role in the emergence of replica symmetry breaking in a fully connected, frustrated spin network of up to 15 spin-1=2 particles.Quantum trajectories of entangled spins reach steady-state spin configurations of lower energy than that of semiclassical trajectories.Cavity emission allows monitoring of the continuous stochastic evolution of spin configurations, while backaction from this projects entangled states into states of broken Ising and replica symmetry. The emergence of spin glass order manifests itself through the simultaneous absence of magnetization and the presence of nontrivial spin overlap density distributions among replicas. Moreover, these overlaps reveal incipient ultrametric order, in line with the Parisi replica symmetry breaking solution for the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model.A nonthermal Parisi order parameter distribution, however, highlights the driven-dissipative nature of this quantum optical spin glass. This practicable system could serve as a test bed for exploring how quantum effects enrich the physics of spin glasses.

Multimode Cavity QED Ising Spin Glass

Brendan Marsh, David Atri-Schuller, Yunpeng Ji +5 more

We realize a driven-dissipative Ising spin glass using cavity QED in a novel "4/7" multimode geometry. Gases of ultracold atoms trapped within the cavity by optical tweezers serve as effective spins. They are coupled via randomly signed, all-to-all Ising cavity-mediated interactions. Networks of up to n=25 spins are holographically imaged via cavity emission. The system is driven through a frustrated transverse-field Ising transition, and we show that the entropy of the spin glass states depends on the rate at which the transition is crossed. Despite being intrinsically nonequilibrium, the system exhibits phenomena associated with Parisi's theory of equilibrium spin glasses, namely, replica symmetry breaking (RSB) and ultrametric structure. For system sizes up to n=16, we measure the Parisi function q(x), Edwards-Anderson overlap q_{EA}, and ultrametricity K correlator; all indicate a deeply ordered spin glass under RSB. The system can serve as an associative memory and enable aging and rejuvenation studies in driven-dissipative spin glasses at the microscopic level.

Equilibrium Dynamics of Infinite-Range Quantum Spin Glasses in a Field

Maria Tikhanovskaya, Subir Sachdev A, Rhine Samajdar

We determine the low-energy spectrum and Parisi replica-symmetry-breaking function for the spin-glass phase of the quantum Ising model with infinite-range random exchange interactions and transverse and longitudinal ( h ) fields. We show that, for all h , the spin-glass state has full replica symmetry breaking and the local spin spectrum is gapless, with a spectral density that vanishes linearly with frequency. These results are obtained using an action functional—argued to yield exact results at low frequencies—that expands in powers of a spin-glass order parameter, which is bilocal in time, and a matrix in replica space. We also present the exact solution of the infinite-range spherical quantum p -rotor model at nonzero h : here, the spin-glass state has one-step replica symmetry breaking and gaplessness only appears after imposition of an additional marginal stability condition. Possible connections to experiments on random arrays of trapped Rydberg atoms are noted. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Exact Numerical Solution of the Fully Connected Classical and Quantum Heisenberg Spin Glass

Nikita Kavokine, Markus Müller, Antoine Georges +1 more

We present the mean field solution of the quantum and classical Heisenberg spin glasses, using the combination of a high precision numerical solution of the Parisi full replica symmetry breaking equations and a continuous time quantum Monte Carlo algorithm. We characterize the spin glass order and its low-energy excitations down to zero temperature. The Heisenberg spin glass has a rougher energy landscape than its Ising analog, and exhibits a very slow temperature evolution of its dynamical properties. We extend our analysis to the doped, metallic Heisenberg spin glass, which displays unexpectedly slow spin dynamics, reflecting the proximity to the melting quantum critical point and its associated Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev Planckian dynamics.

Replica symmetry breaking in spin glasses in the replica-free Keldysh formalism

Johannes Lang, Subir Sachdev A, Sebastian Diehl

We show that the algebra of Parisi ultrametric matrices is recovered by the real-time, replica-free, Dyson-Keldysh equations of infinite-range quantum spin glasses in the late time glassy limit. This connects to earlier results on classical and quantum systems showing how ultrametricity emerges from the persistent slow aging dynamics of the glass phase. The stationary spin glass state thereby spontaneously breaks thermal symmetry, or the Kubo-Martin-Schwinger relation of a state in global thermal equilibrium. We describe the Keldysh path integral of the infinite-range Ising model in transverse and longitudinal fields, and in the context of the Landau expansion of the action functional, show how the long-time limit connects to the full replica symmetry breaking obtained in the equilibrium formalism. We also illustrate our formalism by applying it to the spherical quantum p p -spin model, which only exhibits one-step replica symmetry breaking.

Generalized stochastic spin-wave theory for open quantum spin systems

Zejian Li, Anna Delmonte, Rosario Fazio

We propose a semiclassical framework for solving open quantum dynamics in driven-dissipative spin systems. Our method consists of generalized spin-wave approximations tailored to describing quantum trajectories unravelled from the master equation, and generically applies to regimes beyond the reach of conventional spin-wave theories, including short-range interactions and local quantum jumps, enabling the efficient simulation of large-scale interacting spins. We illustrate the versatility of our framework by studying a variable-range driven-dissipative Ising model on a 2D lattice. When the dissipation acts along the drive axis, we find a continuous phase transition breaking the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry, and demonstrate that the interaction range, when tuned from fully-connected to nearest-neighbour, profoundly alters the universality class of the criticality. With the dissipation along the interaction axis, we show the emergence of a first-order transition. Demonstrated with both state-diffusion and quantum-jump types of trajectory dynamics, our framework provides a powerful toolbox for the efficient semiclassical description of non-equilibrium dynamics and many-body phases in spin systems.

Quantum-to-classical crossover in the spin glass dynamics of cavity QED simulators

Hossein Hosseinabadi, Darrick E. Chang, Jamir Marino

By solving the quench dynamics of a frustrated many-body spin-boson problem, we investigate the role of spin size on the dynamical formation of spin-glass order. In particular, we observe that quantum and classical spin glasses exhibit markedly different evolution. The former displays a quick relaxation of magnetization together with an exponential dependence of the spin-glass order parameter on spin size, while the latter has long-lasting prethermal magnetization and a spin-glass order parameter independent of spin size. The quantum-to-classical crossover is sharp and occurs for relatively small spins, highlighting the fragility of the quantum regime. Furthermore, we show that spin-glass order is resonantly enhanced when the frequency of the bosonic mediators of the interactions approaches the value of the transverse field. Our predictions are directly applicable to the nonequilibrium dynamics of all spin-glass systems with SU(2) spins, such as the quantum Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model, and they can be examined in recently developed multimode cavity QED experiments.
