Abstract

The authors propose a chiral odd Chern number lattice supersolid (CLSS) state realized through designing the specially spatial dependence of the effective Rydberg-dressed interaction in a single component Rydberg-dressed Fermi gas in an optical lattice. They show multiple number-tunable chiral Majorana fermions can be supported in CLSS, with potential applications in topological quantum computation.

Topological semimetal and superfluid of s-wave interacting fermionic atoms in an orbital optical lattice

Maksims Arzamasovs, Shuai Li, W. Vincent Liu +1 more

Recent advanced experimental implementations of optical lattices with highly tunable geometry open up new regimes for quantum many-body states of matter that previously had not been accessible. Here we introduce a symmetry-based method of utilizing the geometry of optical lattice to systematically control topologically non-trivial orbital hybridization. Such an orbital mixing leads to an unexpected and yet robust topological semimetal at single-particle level for a gas of fermionic atoms. When considering s-wave attractive interaction between atoms as for instance tuned by Feshbach resonance, topological superfluid state with high Chern number is unveiled in the presence of on-site rotation. This state supports chiral edge excitations, manifesting its topological nature. An experimental realization scheme is designed, which introduces a systematic way of achieving a new universality class (such as Chern number of 2) of orbital-hybridized topological phases beyond geometrically standard optical lattices.

Topological superfluid of s -wave-interacting fermions by engineered orbital hybridization in an optical lattice

Maksims Arzamasovs, Shuai Li, Shuqi Han +2 more

Recent advanced experimental implementations of optical lattices with highly tunable geometry open up new regimes for exploring quantum many-body states of matter that had not been accessible previously. Here we report that a topological fermionic superfluid with higher Chern number emerges spontaneously from $s$-wave spin-singlet pairing in an orbital optical lattice when its geometry is tuned to explicitly break reflection symmetry. Qualitatively distinct from the conventional scheme that relies on higher partial-wave pairing, the crucial ingredient of our model is topology originating from mixing higher Wannier orbitals. It leads to unexpected changes in the topological band structure at the single-particle level, i.e., the bands are transformed from possessing two flux-$\ensuremath{\pi}$ Dirac points into a single quadratic touching point with flux $2\ensuremath{\pi}$. Based on such engineered single-particle bands, spin-singlet pairing of ultracold fermions arising from standard $s$-wave attractive interaction is found to induce higher Chern number (Chern number of 2) and topologically protected chiral edge modes, all occurring at a higher critical temperatures in relative scales, potentially circumventing one of the major obstacle for its realization in ultracold gases.

Topological supersolidity of dipolar Fermi gases in a spin-dependent optical lattice

Wang, H Y, Zheng, Z, Lin Zhuang +3 more

We investigate the topological supersolid states of dIPolar Fermi gases trapped in a spin-dependent 2D optical lattice. Our results show that topological supersolid states can be achieved via the combination of topological superfluid states with the strIPe order. Different from the general held belief that supersolid state in fermionic system can only survive with simultaneous coexistence of the repulsive and attractive dIPolar interaction. We demonstrate that it can be maintained when the dIPolar interaction is attractive in both x and y direction. By adjusting the ratio of hopping amplitude between different directions and dIPolar interaction strength U, the system will undergo a phase transition among p x + IP y superfluid state, p y-wave superfluid state, and the topological supersolid state. The supersolid state in the attractive environment is proved to be stable by the positive sign of the inverse compressibility. We also design an experimental protocol to realize the staggered next-next-nearest-neighbor hopping via the laser assisted tunneling technique, which is the key to simulate the spin-dependent potential.

The fractional Chern insulator with Rydberg-dressed neutral atoms

Yang Zhao, Xiaofeng Shi

Topological nontrivial bands can be realized via Rydberg-dressed neutral atoms. We propose a two-dimensional hard-core boson model with a topological ground enrgy at band on a honeycomb lattice, where the particle hopping is realized via van der Waals interaction that exchanges the Rydberg states of two interacting atoms, while nonzero phases associated with hopping is created by transferring the optical phase of laser fields to the atomic pair wave function. Using exactly diagonalization and infinite density matrix renormalization group simulation, we find in the system a fractional Chern insulator phase with a Chern number C = 1/2, which can persist in the presence of weak many-body interactions. Our studies indicate that fractional Chern insulators can be studied with neutral-atom arrays.

Majorana fermions in quasi-1D and higher dimensional ultracold optical lattices

Chunlei Qu, Ming Gong, Yong Xu +2 more

We show that Majorana fermions (MFs) exist in twoand three-dimensional (2D,3D) fermionic optical lattices with strictly 1D spin-orbit coupling (SOC) which has already been realized in experiments. For a quasi-1D topological BCS superfluid, there are multiple MFs at each end which are topologically protected by a chiral symmetry. In the generalization to higher dimensions, the multiple MFs form a zero energy flat band. An additional experimentally tunable in-plane Zeeman field drives the system to a topological Fulde-Ferrell (FF) superfluid phase. We find that even though the multiple MFs are robust against the in-plane Zeeman field if the order parameters at the different chains are enforced to be identical, they are destroyed in the self-consistently obtained FF phase where the order parameters are inhomogeneous on the boundaries. Our results are useful to guide the experimentalists on searching for MFs in the context of ultracold fermionic atoms.

Supersolid phases of ultracold bosons trapped in optical lattices dressed with Rydberg p states

Mathieu Barbier, Henrik Lütjeharms, Walter Hofstetter

Engineering quantum phases with spontaneously broken symmetries is a major goal of research in different fields. Trapped ultracold Rydberg-excited atoms in optical lattices are a promising platform for realizing quantum phases with broken lattice translational symmetry since they are interacting over distances larger than the lattice constant. Although numerous theoretical works on trapped Rydberg-excited gases have predicted such phases, in particular, density wave or supersolid phases, their experimental observation proves to be difficult due to challenges such as scattering processes and the limited experimentally achievable coupling strength. Most of these previous studies have focused on isotropically interacting gases dressed with Rydberg $s$ states, while the effect of anisotropic interactions due to Rydberg-excited $p$ states in trapped quantum gases remains much less investigated. Additionally, it was shown that the excitation scheme used to excite Rydberg $p$ states possesses advantages regarding achievable coupling strengths and limitation of scattering processes compared to its $s$-state counterpart, which makes the investigation of Rydberg $p$-state dressed quantum gases even more interesting. In the present work we study the extended two-component Bose-Hubbard model, realized with a bosonic quantum gas with Rydberg-excited $p$ states trapped in an optical lattice, within the Gutzwiller mean-field theory. We compute the ground-state phase diagram and investigate its different regimes. By comparison to the phase diagram of the isotropic case, we find the anisotropic interaction to be more advantageous for the observation of supersolid phases.
