Abstract

IF (Imbert--Fedorov) shifts which refers to a transverse micro-displacement occurs at the interface between two media. The estimation of such micro-displacement enables a deeper understanding of light-matter interactions. In this paper, we propose a theoretical scheme to investigate the IF shifts and incident angle sensitivity by introducing SPR sensor into the SU(1,1) interferometer. By injecting two coherent states in the SU(1,1) interferometer, we obtain the sensitivity of the IF shifts and incident angle based on the homodyne detection. Our results demonstrate that it is possible to get the maximal IF shift and the optimal IF shifts sensitivity simultaneously. Meanwhile, the orbit angular momentum carried by Laguerre-Gauss (LG) beam is unfavorable for improving the IF shift sensitivity. Furthermore, we have investigated the sensitivity of the incident angle in our scheme and found that it is capable of surpassing the sensitivity limit of $(6\times 10^{-6}){{}^\circ}$. This allows us to achieve a more precise IF shifts sensitivity than the traditional weak measurement method used for IF shift detection, which typically has a rotation precision limit of 0.04${{}^\circ}$ [Journal of Optics, 19(10), 105611]. More importantly, both the sensitivity of IF shifts and incident angle can breakthrough the (shot noise limit) SNL, even approaching the Cramér-Rao bound (QCRB) at the incident angle $θ=43.6208{{}^\circ}$ and $θ=43.6407{{}^\circ}$. We also discover that increasing the coherent amplitude is beneficial for improving the sensitivity of both the IF shifts and incident angle. Our findings shall offer a novel scheme for measuring micro-displacement in SPR sensor. These results can be helpful in the development of more precise quantum-based sensors for studying light-matter interactions.

Enhancing phase sensitivity in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer with various detection schemes using SU(1,1) coherent states

Nour-Eddine Abouelkhir, Abdallah Slaoui, El Hassan Saidi +2 more

Improving interferometric phase sensitivity is crucial for high-precision measurements in rapidly developing quantum technologies. The Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZI) is a versatile tool for analyzing this phenomenon. By splitting and recombining a light beam using beam splitters, the MZI allows for precise phase sensitivity analysis using tools like the quantum Cramér–Rao bound (QCRB) and the quantum Fisher information (QFI). This paper analyzes the phase sensitivity of an MZI in various scenarios using different detection schemes and input states. We compare the single- and two-parameter quantum estimation and their associated QCRB for three phase-shift situations: in both arms; only in the upper arm (asymmetric); and in both arms symmetrically. We then investigate the phase sensitivity under three detection schemes: intensity difference; single-mode intensity; and balanced homodyne. Additionally, we explore the use of Perelomov and Barut–Girardello coherent states, two types of SU(1,1) coherent states, in all scenarios. Notably, we demonstrate that, under optimal conditions, all detection schemes can achieve the QCRB by utilizing SU(1,1) coherent states as input states.

Enhancement of the angular rotation measurement sensitivity based on SU(2) and SU(1,1) interferometers

Jun Liu, Wenxiao Liu, Shitao Li +3 more

We investigate the sensitivity of the angular rotation measurement with the method of homodyne detection in SU(2) and SU(1,1) interferometers by employing orbital angular momentum (OAM). By combining a coherent beam with a vacuum beam in an SU(2) interferometer, we get the sensitivity of the angular rotation measurement as 12Nl. We can surpass the limit of the angular rotation measurement in an SU(1,1) interferometer by combining a coherent beam with a vacuum beam or a squeezed vacuum beam when the probe beam has OAM. Without injection, the sensitivity can reach 12Nl. In addition, by employing another construction of an SU(1,1) interferometer where the pump beam has OAM, with the same injection of an SU(1,1) interferometer, the sensitivity of the angular rotation measurement can be improved by a factor of 2, reaching 14Nl. The results confirm the potential of this technology for precision measurements in angular rotation measurements.

Enhancement of angular displacement measurement sensitivity by modified-SU(2) interferometry

Karunesh Kumar Mishra, Priyanka Sharma, Devendra Kumar Mishra

In this paper, we investigate the angular displacement measurements using the homodyne detection method in a modified-SU(2) Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI). Three parametric amplifiers (PAs) are used. PA’s role is to increase the number of photons and to reduce the shot-noise. We also consider quantum Fisher information (QFI) and derive expressions for single- and twoparameter cases and corresponding quantum Cramer-Rao bounds (QCRB). We find that angular displacement sensitivity exceeds the standard quantum limit (SQL) or shot-noise limit (SNL) and approaches single- and two-parameter QCRB. Finally, we investigate the impact of photon losses on the sensitivity of interferometer

Phase Independent Measurement of Weak Coherent Optical Signals

Lani Chastain, Priya Drashni, Mahadeva Chanda Durjoy +3 more

We develop a quantum sensing framework for the phase independent detection of weak coherent optical displacements based on SU(1,1) interferometry. Unlike conventional quantum measurement protocols that require prior knowledge of the signal phase and coherent homodyne detection, the proposed approach estimates the displacement magnitude independently of its phase. We show that, under ideal lossless conditions, a conventional SU(1,1) interferometer employing only total intensity detection saturates the quantum Cramer Rao bound for displacement magnitude estimation. We further derive the analytical expression of the quantum Cramer Rao bound and the sensitivity of the conventional SU(1,1) interferometer with total intensity detection and systematically investigate its performance in the presence of optical loss. The proposed phase-independent intensity detection scheme achieves comparable performance over experimentally relevant operating regimes while eliminating the need for local oscillators, phase locking, and quadrature tracking. These results establish SU(1,1) based intensity detection as a practical platform for phase independent quantum sensing.

Super-resolution and ultra-sensitivity of angular rotation measurement based on SU(1,1) interferometers using homodyne detection

Jun Liu, Shitao Li, Dong Wei +2 more

Abstract We theoretically explore the angular rotation measurement sensitivity of SU(1,1) interferometers with a coherent beam and a vacuum beam input by using orbital angular momentum (OAM). Compared with the OAM in an SU(2) interferometer, the SU(1,1) interferometer employing homodyne detection can further surpass the angular rotation shot noise limit 1 2 l N and improve the resolution and sensitivity of angular rotation measurement. Two models are considered, one is that OAM is carried by a probe beam and the other one is a pump beam with the OAM. The sensitivity can be improved by higher OAM and nonlinear process with a large gain. The resolution can be enhanced in the case that the pump beam has OAM. Moreover, we present a brief discussion on the variation of resolution and sensitivity in the presence of photon loss.

Improving the phase sensitivity of an SU(1,1) interferometer with photon-added squeezed vacuum light

Lili Guo, Ya‐Fei Yu, Zhi‐Ming Zhang

We study the phase sensitivity of an SU(1,1) interferometer from two aspects, i.e., the phase estimation determined by the error propagation formula and that by the quantum Cramér-Rao bound (QCRB). The results show that the phase sensitivity by using the intensity detection reaches the sub-shot-noise limit with a coherent state and an m-photon-added squeezed vacuum state (m-PA-SVS) as inputs. The phase sensitivity gradually approaches the Heisenberg limit for increasing m, and the ultimate phase precision improves with the increase of m. In addition, the QCRB can be saturated by the intensity detection with inputting the m-PA-SVS.
