Abstract

We study the competition between ferromagnetic and spin glass phases using a system of coupled infinite-range Ising and Sherrington-Kirkpatrick models. We obtain the replica-symmetric solution for the free energy of this system in terms of magnetization and Edwards-Anderson order parameters in both subsystems. Using these order parameters we are able to identify different phases in the system and determine which phase is dominant for different strengths of the coupling between two subsystems. We observe that both subsystems are in the same phase although with different order parameters. The phase boundary between paramagnetic-ferromagnetic and paramagnetic--spin glass phases is more or less similar to that in the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick phase diagram. But the boundary between ferromagnetic--spin glass phases becomes qualitatively different as the coupling between the two subsystems changes. Remarkably, for intermediate values of the coupling, this phase boundary is such that there could be a reentrant transition between spin glass and ferromagnetic phases by increasing the temperature. We found that for some range of the coupling, the second-order transition between these phases turns into first order at a tricritical point. Further, we carry out the stability analysis by considering deviations from the replica-symmetric solution.

Ferromagnetic-glassy transitions in three-dimensional Ising spin glasses

Giacomo Ceccarelli, Andrea Pelissetto C, Ettore Vicari

We investigate the ferromagnetic-glassy transitions that separate the low-temperature ferromagnetic and spin-glass phases in the temperature-disorder phase diagram of three-dimensional Ising spin-glass models. For this purpose, we consider the cubic-lattice $\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}J$ (Edwards-Anderson) Ising model with bond distribution $P(J)=p\ensuremath{\delta}(J\ensuremath{-}1)+(1\ensuremath{-}p)\ensuremath{\delta}(J+1)$, and present a numerical Monte Carlo study of the critical behavior along the line that marks the onset of ferromagnetism. The finite-size scaling analysis of the Monte Carlo data shows that the ferromagnetic-glassy transition line is slightly reentrant. As a consequence, for an interval of the disorder parameter $p$, around $p\ensuremath{\approx}0.77$, the system presents a low-temperature glassy phase, an intermediate ferromagnetic phase, and a high-temperature paramagnetic phase. Along the ferromagnetic-glassy transition line, magnetic correlations show a universal critical behavior with critical exponents $\ensuremath{\nu}=0.96(2)$ and $\ensuremath{\eta}=\ensuremath{-}0.39(2)$. The hyperscaling relation $\ensuremath{\beta}/\ensuremath{\nu}=(1+\ensuremath{\eta})/2$ is satisfied at the transitions, so that $\ensuremath{\beta}/\ensuremath{\nu}=0.305(10)$. This magnetic critical behavior represents a new universality class for ferromagnetic transitions in Ising-type disordered systems. Overlap correlations are apparently not critical and show a smooth behavior across the transition.

Studies of the phase diagram of randomly interacting fermionic systems

Oppermann, R., Bernd Rosenow

We present details of the phase diagrams of fermionic systems with random and frustrated interactions, emphasizing the important role of the chemical potential. The insulating fermionic Ising spin glass model is shown to reveal different entangled magnetic instabilities and phase transitions. We review tricritical phenomena related to the strong correspondence between charge and spin fluctuations, being controlled by quantum statistics. We compare the spin density diluted Sherrington-Kirkpatrick spin glass with classical spin 1 models such as the BEG model. We analyse in detail the infinite range model and show that spin glass order must decay discontinuously as the chemical potential exceeds a critical value, provided the temperature is below the tricritical one, and that the T=0 transition is of classical type. Parisi replica permutation symmetry breaking (RPSB) governs the thermal spin glass transitions and fermionic modifications of the SK-models AT-line emerge. RPSB takes place everywhere within the fermionic spin glass phase. Although the critical field theory of the quantum paramagnet to spin glass transition in metallic systems remains replica--symmetric at T=0, with only small corrections at low T from RPSB, the phase diagram is affected at O(T^0) by RPSB. Generalizing our results for the fermionic Ising spin glass we consider aspects of models with additional spin and charge quantum--dynamics such as metallic spin glasses.

Quantum XY Spin Glass Model with Longitudinal Ferromagnetic Coupling

Shang Yu-Min, K.L. Yao

The quantum XY spin glass model with longitudinal ferromagnetic coupling is investigated in static replica symmetry limit. Several thermodynamic quantities are calculated numerically. We find that the ferromagnetic coupling enhances the stability of replica symmetric solution. A 2-dimensional Ising model like transition is found, which demonstrates that the ferromagnetic coupling increases the order of spin glass model. Affected by the ferromagnetic coupling, transverse component of the susceptibility has two cusps corresponding to transverse-longitudinal spin-glass phase transition and longitudinal spin glass-paramagnetic transition separately.

Replica symmetry breaking solution for the fermionic Ising spin-glass and the Ghatak-Sherrington model

H Feldmann, R Oppermann

We solve the fermionic version of the Ising spin glass for arbitrary filling µ and temperature T taking into account replica symmetry breaking. Using a simple exact mapping from µ to the anisotropy parameter D , we also obtain the solution of the S = 1 Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model. An analytic expression for T = 0 gives an improved critical value for the first-order phase transition. We revisit the question of stability against replica-diagonal fluctuations and find that the appearance of complex eigenvalues of the Almeida-Thouless matrix is not an artefact of the replica-symmetric approximation.

Model of a quasi-one-dimensional spin glass

Matej Orešič, R. Pirc

We consider a system of linear chains of Ising spins with short-range nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic interactions of strength K along the chains, and with infinite-range random interchain interactions of a Sherrington-Kirkpatrick type. Also included in the model is a local Gaussian random field with variance \ensuremath{\Delta}. In the replica symmetric case, the system is mapped exactly on the one-dimensional Ising model in a random field and a recursion method for calculating the spin-correlation functions is developed. For \ensuremath{\Delta}=0, an analytic relation for freezing temperature ${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{f}}$(K) is obtained. The replica-symmetric spin-glass phase is shown to be stable above the freezing temperature ${\mathit{T}}_{\mathit{f}}$(K,\ensuremath{\Delta}), which is determined numerically.

Spin-glass behavior from Migdal's recursion relations

Ciriyam Jayaprakash, J. Chalupa, Michael Wortis

The Edwards-Anderson model of a spin glass is studied by position-space renormalization-group techniques, using an inhomogeneous generalization of Migdal's approximate recursion relation. We treat the spin-1/2 Ising model with independently random nearest-neighbor interactions in dimensionalities $d=2, 3, \mathrm{and} 4$. The phase diagram, which is in qualitative agreement with mean-field results, exhibits paramagnetic, ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, and spin-glass phases. The spin-glass and paramagnetic phases meet along an extended second-order phase boundary, which terminates in two tricritical points. Critical and tricritical exponents are calculated. The spin-glass specific-heat exponent turns out to be large and negative, compatibly with recent experiments which show a rounded specific-heat anomaly.
